Whether you're running, climbing (ice or rock), hiking, backpacking, skiing, or snowboarding, you'll love the Patagonia Men's Capilene 3 Midweight Bottom. Slip this bottom on under shell pants and you'll immediately recognize the free movement you have, and when you're in the middle of your activity you'll notice how well it breathes.

  • Polartec Power Dry fabric stretches and dries quickly, and it makes this bottom Patagonia's fastest wicking baselayer for sweaty athletes
  • Polygiene permanent odor control helps when you go on weeklong ski vacations and don't want to mess with doing laundry
  • Slim fit lets you layer over this baselayer for snowy days on the resort, or just wear this by itself while you're trail running in the late fall
  • Brushed elastic waistband feels soft against the skin
  • Gusseted crotch won't restrict movement so you can run as free as you like

The Midweight is still pretty thin.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I expected the Midweight 3 to be much thicker. I am glad that it isn't.

When layering the Midweight is a perfect choice. I have some Heavyweight base layers from MHW which is overkill most of the time. I also have some Silkweight from EB. I don't really count the UnderArmour I have because it makes you feel cold. It is just weird stuff.

Patagonia's Capilene is hands down the best underwear out there. I was only using a pair of lightweight guide pants on Rainier and added these for our ascent of the mountain. It was the perfect combination even though it wasn't the best of conditions. We all looked like frosted donuts by the time we reached the summit. I was fine the entire time on my legs. I would have overheated if they would have been any heavier weight.

If I was looking for a set of underwear I would start with the Midweight Capilene and then get a heavier or lighter weight later.

The Midweight 3 is just so versatile when layering.

I am wondering if these would be too warm to wear with a pair of gore-tex pants? I will be snowboarding bowls and backcountry in -10 to 20 degree weather. Thanks!

Hey mmc105298538,

No, these shouldn't be too warm while wearing them with a pair of gore-tex pants.

Why is it when you see the top you want the bottoms arent the same color

Responded on

Ha! I hate it when that happens.
What color/size are you looking for? Email me and I can check to see if we have them on order! Unfortunately it does look like Patagonia makes the top in way more colors than the bottoms, so obviously we are limited to what they produce.

Super soft, runs large

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

I bought this to upgrade my older base layers. After-all, base layers are extremely important. They fit rather large compared to what I'm used to. I am 6'1, 185 and the Large fits pretty lose. Wish I would've gotten the Medium! Oh well, what can you do? They're comfortable and don't itch at all. Good buy. Remember to hang dry!

Is Capilene warmer than Marino wool? I ski.

pclarke,
Generally I feel that merino wool is warmer than Capilene if we are talking oz for oz. However there are a variety of factors that go into what makes a Capilene or merino garment warm beyond the base material itself. While there are some hardcore aficionados that will only wear one kind of material, I tend to like merino for warmth when I need warmth above all else and my activity is not too strenuous, and prefer synthetic for higher intensity activity where breathability and mobility are more important.

Wonderfully Warm & Comfortable

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is the second pair I have brought my son. He's a railroader working in all types of weather. He claims they are the best ever! Very comfortable, true to size, they don't shrink but most of all, keeps him warm in high winter winds with windchills below zero. He claims it's the best investment I've ever brought him. He claims he'll never buy anything else again. The service was great, delivery very fast. So glad I choose Backcountry, will continue to do business with them in the future.

Nice and warm

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

what is better than being warm and comfortable? Nothing. These bottoms provide you with that warmth and comfort when you are in cold and uncomfortable environments. I mostly use these Ice climbing to help stay warm at belays and I have used them running in the winter as well. they are perfect for both, a bit to warm for me to ski in unless its really cold. but the performance and durability cannot be beat
