At first when I received this this shirt I questioned its durability but it has stood up to the test of time. When working out on the trail when it was nearly always raining this was my go to layer to keep me warm even when I was getting dumped on. After putting it on I would instantly feel the difference it made. The zipper is key to giving some ventilation when the sun (rarely) peaked out of the clouds.
The shirt was very comfortable as a base layer and stay far less stinky than other shirts even after being warn on a trail worker who hasn't showered in a week!

Lightweight, quick drying, great for aerobic activities when the mercury drops. I have had mine for five years and when they do wear out, I can recycle them through Patagonia. Can't beat a good performing baselayer that also has a conscious for the environment.
Zipper helps regulate body temperature. Only wish they would make short sleeve versions with zippers as well!
the is it

this is the end all be all of base layers. if i had to choose one piece of clothing to take anywhere, this would be it. it does it all, wicks like a mad man, dries before your eyes, makes the mountain man smell disappear keeps me warm into the 40's and can be warn virtually all summer long while peak bagging. i have warm just this while snowshoeing in the 40's and been perfectly comfortable, and i have had it on while hiking the virginia AT in June. buy it, you simply cant be disappointed. and i challenge you to not buy another as soon as you put on your first one.

I've used this top from hiking the southern Alps in cool spring weather, staying warm in the cool mornings of the Sudan rainy season, and using it as a base layer for snowboarding. It's not tough and I wouldn't recommend it for climbing because the fabric pulls easily. But, it's very versatile and super comfortable.

Great shirt. Fits well. I have worn it running and skiing. I will be buying more colors as an all around base layer.

i cant at all begin to say how much i love this layer. it's absolutely the most glorious thing i own. i literally wear one every day, and sometimes to work. you can wear a button up shirt under it and it's sooo good lookin! simple and functional like nobody's business! i literally sweat like a pig. i'm half sasquatch and hairy as all get out and this is about the only thing that wicks the sweat away during the summer, spring, winter whatever! this is my NUMBER ONE GO TO top. i have the brown (that i stole from my twin), the blue, and the black. i wear it to church with a button up and tie, i wear it to interviews and meetings, it's sooo classy, and yet SOOO outdoorsy. this is a great layer and is a concoction of angel hair and davey crocket. i love em and even sold my girlfriend on em. i also would recommend the bottoms. they're great too!

The Capilene 2 series from Patagonia offers great cool weather protection on the slopes, in the wood or even for everyday use. The material is very soft and extremely light weight but still manages to keep you warm. The zip neck allows for quick and easy ventilation during exerting outings. When in the field at work I wear my cap 2 as a base layer under my button down shirts and the short collar works perfectly. Can be worn alone in the early fall and late spring. For really cold days try the Capilene 3 series.
Nice but...

I've recently become a huge long sleeve/thermal fan (only took me 30 years in Minnesota to see the wonder that is long undies) and I've started to amass a grand collection.
The material is nice, the only gripe I have is the zipped collar sits at an awkward spot on my chin and bugs a bit, I usually have to zip it down or tuck it down inside.
A thin but warm pullover

This is a very thin zip-neck pullover. It probably needs to be worn with a shirt underneath because you can pretty much see through the material. Despite being incredibly thin, it is amazingly warm and great for wearing underneath a softshell in active conditions. My wife and I went snowshoeing in the Rockies in late December and early January (read: 20-30 degrees before windchill) and I was perfectly comfortable with the Patagonia Capilene 2 zip-neck over a t-shirt and under a quality soft-shell. Very satisfied given the $20 discount I had. I'm not sure I would pay full price?!

Solid shirt. Mutch more elastic than cap3 and can be worn over thicker tops to give that snug feeling. However it wears/feels much thinner than cap3 and probably be a great solo shirt. Very breathable! great asset to layering-

Bought this for my dad and has the womens version myself. The fit is really great and it performs great- keeps you warm without the bulk. Not the softest in the world but if it is too soft it's not going to perform as well.

I'm so totally impressed with the capilene products. I have the 1, 2, and 3 tops, and just recently got a 3-weight bottom. All of them are great. The capilene 2 zip top holds a special place in my hiking heart. I can wear this shirt on most "3 season" months, except on the hottest of summer days (the 15-mile burroughs range loop in the catskills in 90 degree weather required a capilene 1!). For winter, I prefer the combination of the REI silk and capilene 3 tops. This combination is really excellent.
The 2 and 3 look much less undershirty than the 1 series. The zip 2 looks the best, i think. In comparison, the Smartwool stuff, which i also very much like, isn't well suited for highly aerobic activities. But those products have a higher value in keeping you warm when you aren't moving about as much. Those smartwool products also look less technical than the capilene stuff, a bit more street swanky.
Note that the capilenes, in my experience, don't fend of sweat stench as well as a wool-based shirt. However, given the breathability of the capilenes, i much prefer these for hiking.

Got to agree with everyone about how well they look, especially when you throw off the outerlayers. I received these in Afghanistan during a rather cold day and switched from the polyester blend liners I had on to the Patagonia Capilene 2. I gave it a go at just wearing the layer and worked out pretty well in the 40 degree temps. I was still chilly but not too bad. Its definitely not a wind breaker but provides great insulation when I wore it with mine.
I thought it was too flimsy at first but I did buy it bigger and that'll help I move around in it. I slept in it last night in our 60*F b-hut in a synthetic sleeping bag and was comfortable all night. Did not wake in a sweat or shiver. I've got it on under a polo now and it looks pretty good, IMHO. Defintely a good buy and highly recommended.
