Capilene 2 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Wear the lightweight Patagonia Men's Capilene 2 Crew top alone or as a base layer when you hike, trail run, backpack, mountain bike, or cross country ski. Patagonia made this crew top with an open knit for maximum breathability and wicking. Yet, this knit weave also makes this top warm enough for cold weather. Patagonia gave the Capilene 2 Crew flat, out-of-the-way seams that won't rub underneath pack straps. A slight drop tail keeps your lower back covered, even as you lean forward on your mountain bike. Patagonia's Gladiodor natural odor control keeps you from stinking of sweat.

Bottom Line: Stay dry in the knit Patagonia Capilene 2 Crew whether you ski or trail run.

great base layer

By:
December 2, 2010

I love all of my patagonia capilene and this latest one is no exception. They just fit me great and perform very well. I've tried many other brand base layers, but I like the patagonia capilene the best. And patagonia's capilene line seems very consistent through the years unlike other brands.

My Go-to Base Layer

By:
November 28, 2008

I've got an entire capilene 2 set-up to include long-sleeve top, bottom, and boxer briefs. Having bought other baselayers, I always end up wearing these. They're softer, less restrictive, and more comfortable than say, UnderArmor, but performs just as well.

Weight wise these are comparable to the Smartwool in my experience, and same with warmth. The Capilene 1 is lighter all around, so the trade off for less weight is less warmth.

Warm

By:
November 26, 2007

This is the good way to stay dry and cool despite harsh climates. This knit is open for a little breathability and wicking performance yet insulative enough for active use on cooler days.

whats better capilene or silk?

whats better capilene or silk?

I agree with Cory here. It depends on what activity you are participating in. Capilene 2 doesnt feel like silk at all while the capilene 1 is much more similar. Cold weather pursuit would be better with Capilene 2, but silk or Capilene 1 may be better for humid or hotter temperature with high activity. Silk always feels good though!

In terms of performance (wicking and moister management/ dry times), Capilene & polyester is the way to go. This will suit most activities better.

Silk does do a good job of regulating body temperatures and serves well during low to moderate output cool-weather activities, or is ohh-so-nice when lounging. Can you say cabana wear!

Itchy

By:
November 27, 2006

This may be a wonderful product for wicking moisture and keeping me warm backcountry skiing, but it's got a few major seams on each arm and a few on each side of the shirt. The material is so fine that the seams are pretty huge, and they itch. I just wouldn't want this rubbing on my skin all day.

Has anyone compared these to the Wool 2 Crew? I just bought

Has anyone compared these to the Wool 2 Crew? I just bought a set of the Capilene 2 baselayers, and wore them snowboarding yesterday. They worked great! I was super comfortable. I am intrigued by the Merino wool on the Wool 2, but I am not sure if the performance is worth double the cost of the Capilene 2.

Warmer than you ever think

By:
February 24, 2010

These are great for any activity. I dont go on a trip without it. No itch, warm, great fit. im 5'9 medium build and a medium is where its at. I liked the crew neck better than the zip. The collar on the zip flops around a bit un-zipped. All preference.

Reliable

By:
March 21, 2010

I use this piece of gear primarily for layering when skiing or with other cold weather pursuits. I havent used this top for trail running because I feel that I would get too hot. I prefer a lightweight jacket given my rainy and misty climate in the PacNW. One thing to mention is that the sleeves taper at the end so it can be very difficult to scrunch the sleeves up to your elbow if you get too hot. Not a big deal for me most of the time but every once and awhile it bugs me when Im hot. I love the material and own many other capilene tops. I have no doubt that this top will be with me 10 years down the road.

Good

By:

Like it! Have two Capilene 2 T-shirts that I have in large as I like mt T-shirts loose. This one I bought in medium so its a little more fitted to layer underneath other stuff. Although the sleaves could be a little longer (most climbers I know have a pretty good ape index...), its warm and I rate it.

Very comfortable

By:
March 12, 2010

I bought these for my 70+ year old father and he loves them. He is very cold-natured and has only know the waffle style of thermal underwear. He loves these. He mainly uses them for umpiring softball games on cold days, but he admits that they are so soft and comfortable, that he wears them around the house too. The only thing negative that he mentioned was that the sleeves were a little long so he has to fold them up to keep them from showing beneath his top layer.

Base Layer Boast

By:
January 12, 2009

While not cheap...it does as advertised. Softer and more comfortable than most wool based products, it provides great warmth and wears well. Any outdoor activity done in cold weather will be much more enjoyable with this acting as a buffer between the skin and the weather. I bought three and they get plenty of use. Thumbs up!!!

Awesome Base but....

By:
April 17, 2009

I will admit this is my first good quality base layer... I can think back to soccer when I was sporting some Champion brand spandex but I did pick up the full Capilene 2 system and am amazed. Comfy, slightly loose fitting, breathable and very quick drying all as advertised. My only gripe is with the durability, I am a little worried as I have had these for about one month and gotten quite a bit of use from them already, the shirt has been flawless while the pants have a small rip starting in my inner thigh. The only thing I have used them for thus far is biking and the rip would make sense if there was anything sharp around my saddle (which I made sure there is not). It appears the rip might be coming from repetitive stretching? I have yet to contact Patagonia yet to see what they have to say. But worn as a base layer this stuff is amazing!!! just watch out for snaggs and maybe stretching the fabric to much. Thanks!!

Nice shirt

By:
March 5, 2009

As a base layer, it adds some warmth and can be used for casual wear as well. By itself, it would be comfortable to wear even in hot weather- the open knit mesh type construction allows you to feel the breeze on your skin. Super light weight, and seems kind of delicate but I have had no problems yet.

Perfect for what it is

By:
February 4, 2009

Looks and fits fine. Works as it's supposed to and is just as good as fancier shirts that cost twice as much. The blue is even a nice color. And.. Patagonia is a good, socially responsible company. Am happy with my purchase.

Crucial

By:
February 2, 2009

The perfect baselayer for 15-40 deg weather. Add a vest and some sort of windblocker or shell and I am toasty. Good wicking properties, good heat retention and decent antimicrobial, although if smells are your big issue, then maybe the patagucci wool is your bag.
