Light is always right (well, usually).

Not only does the Patagonia Men's Capilene 1 Crew make an excellent lightweight top for people getting after it in the mountains, it also uses 100% recycled fabrics to get the job done. As the lightest top in Patagonia's line, this is clearly the choice for those days where you're moving fast enough that you don't need a ton of extra insulation.

Great as a base layer or on its own

Comfy, doesn't get all stinky right away, works well as a base layer or on its own. What more could you want in a shirt?

Great undershirt

fits really well, I got a M and I'm 5'10" 175 lbs, Love that the shoulders dont have seams right on the edge of the shoulder. Probably one of the best long underwear shirts out there. This and the helly hansen one, which is also awesome

I stand about 6ft 0.5inch tall and weight around 198 pounds. chest 42inch, waist 38inch, hip 41inch.

which size will fit me best? L or XL?

Best Answer Responded on

All of the Capilenes have about the same fit. Large for a snug fit and XL for a relaxed fit.

Responded on

I am about your size, I have a little bigger chest 46 and a little thinner waist 34, and the XL is perfect for me.

capilene 1

It didn't wick well with a shirt over it. It my be great for wearing as the only shirt on a warm windy day but in the cold weather it stayed soggy.

Gift for dad

This was a gift for my dad for Christmas. He loved it and put it on as soon as he opened it. It was light, perfect for summer hiking, and fit him perfectly.

#1 Baselayer

For lightweight baselayers this is the first one I pull out of the drawer. Very comfortable, fits just right and feels good on your skin. Patagonia considers this a slim fit but I think of it more as an athletic fit, fits snug but not tight. It is not compression fit like some other baselayers.

Wicks moisture so well, bottom line, great shirt.

After 5 days my capilene 1 was still working well with no stink.

Patagonia Capilene 1 Crew

Great lightweight layer for aerobic use from Patagonia. I have used this as my only layer when the sun is shining and love the UV protection it provides. When the mercury drops this works well as a baselayer with layers on top. Out of all my hiking gear, this is probably the most versatile piece of clothing. If your budget is tight, consider this top as you will be able to find a reason to bring it on every trip!

Write your question here...My Son is in the High School marching band. We live in TX and the uniform is wool. Needless to say in Aug its very hot here. He is breaking out in to heat rashes all over his body. Would this be a good shirt for him to wear under his uniform? Or would it make him even hotter?

Best Answer Responded on

This will make him hotter. You could try something that's made from a cotton/synthetic blend for cycling or running to see if wicking the sweat away from his skin will help, but the wool and heat are probably going to continue to get the best of him. Also, if it doesn't keep him from marching, try some diphenhydramine (benadryl) to help with the rash, and some talcum or Gold Bond powder before he suits up. Another thought might be to use a few strategically placed frozen cold compresses that will fit under his uniform in places like his neck, upper torso, lower back, above the groin next to his hip bones, inner thighs, or any areas where the rash is particularly bad (use surgical or athletic tape to keep them in place if you have to). The idea is to lower his core temperature by cooling his blood, thereby cutting down his perspiration. You should probably talk to the school about it, too. I'm sure, given the circumstances and commonality of prickly heat, he's not the only one suffering, and they should address what's really a legitimate health concern.

Light and Comfy

This shirt has been great. It provides just a touch of added warmth and a layer between my sticky body and my sleeping bag or quilt. Even after nine days in the backcountry, uh . . .without washing this shirt, it was still very comfortable to wear around and to sleep it. It didn't wind around my torso or catch on my gear, like some clothing does at times. I bought a light tanish color to reduce it's attraction to mosquitoes.

Hiking the Grand canyon starting at the north rim...told the temp could be in the low 40' early Sept. Looking for a long sleeve shirt to wear that is light weight

Best Answer Responded on

This would be a great place to start your layering system. However, it will retain body oder after a few days depending on your body. I personally like the light wool base layers (patagonia makes them as well as Stoic) because they don't stink and control temperature over a wider range. This does dry faster though! Either way, you can't go wrong with Patagonia gear!

just one thing...

great piece, but i ordered the geeko green version and it has a seam that sits between my collar bone and strap pad. actually perty painfulafter a while. also have never seen seams like these on my other cap undies. i have a feeling that its specific towards the colored versions as this one is thicker than my other cap2 crews and cut more as an outer garment than an under. so im treating as such, and not going backpackin with it. awesome for around town!!! could someone clarify for all us backpack people???

so, this is great for a day on the rocks! it's got some flex and stretch to it and it's very breathable and it's wicks like nobody's business! patagonia is the competition to beat in layers IMO. i'm more of a cap 3 guy because it's just so versatile in mild and colder weather conditions but this layer feels great against the skin and keeps you dry! it provides some uv protection and most importantly looks good. hehe.

Wicks well, but the Capilene feels cold when in cold weather. Sleeves are on the short side. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase.

Little bit of heaven...

I love this shirt!!! It's probably the most comfortable base layer I own!

thin and staticy...feels uncomfortable. Maybe I need to dry it with several sheets of Bounty (which im alergic to) then ill be ichy too.

Best 3-season baselayer

Capilene is the best fabric for baselayers other than perhaps high-quality merino wool. I prefer thin base layers because I can more easily later them (long-sleeve over short-sleeve) and they dry quicker.

The design on the Cap1 is great, too. The sleeves are cut narrowly so they taper to the wrist and do not hang lose. The torso length is also slightly long so the shirt can be tucked in to prevent drafts.

I use the Cap 1 running in cold weather, and in spring/fall over a Cap 1 short-sleeve.
