Hungry, hungry hip ... duffel.

Outfitted with a double-thick exterior, reinforced stitches, and a waterproof coating, the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag 120 is tougher than a tiger shark and ready to swallow all your gear. A U-shaped lid provides quick, easy access to everything you've stashed inside, and adjustable shoulder straps convert this hauler to a backpack for long walks. Expedition gear stays safe thanks to the padded bottom and fabric coating, which shrugs off rain, mud, and snow so you can concentrate on which bus you're supposed to hop for Amsterdam.

  • Removable shoulder straps with a padded back panel offer a comfortable long-haul carry solution
  • Double-layer fabric is abrasion-resistant and coated with water-resistant DWR to keep your gear dry
  • Four corner-mounted webbing daisy chains give you a place to tie down big loads
  • Compression straps store inside the bag and can be used as haul handles in a pinch

2 in the family!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Bought this for my GF after she got me one as a gift. I love the lower weight vs. Wheely Bags for air travel. My only complaint is that the shoulder straps aren't a bit more manageable when not being used. That said, their presence is what makes this bag over the previous duffle. The weather proof material is great for wet days. Lastly, just be careful of size, my 45L seemed tiny (gym bag at best) so it was exchanged for the 90L.

If Patagonia ever get's a good supply of the Black Hole Snow Rollers available we'll be all set. This bag clips right in and the handle on the Snow Roller is the best!

Unanswered Question

If the dimensions are 28x13x13, then shouldn't the cubic inch volume be 4732 (28 times 13 times 13)? I don't see how the stated volume could be 5492 cu in.

Unanswered Question

Are you getting the white color back in stock?

This bag really is a black hole. You can keep stuffing gear and clothes in to your hearts desire and seem to always find room for more. Super durable as well. One of the best duffels out there. Patagonia makes some of the best gear with an ethical and moral commitment to sustainability in their practices as well.

Patagonia Killing It Again

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have a 120L as well as this one, but this one is still big enough to do just about anything I need it to. I'm not that light of a packer and can still fit a weeks worth of clothes in here. Definitely recommend for anyone who does a lot of traveling.

Awesome bag. Made it through the airports just fine and fit everything for a two week trip. If you're taking 9' fly rods, I'd go with the largest size.

were you able to take it on the plane or did you have to check it? thanks!

Is this bag too big to go in the overhead compartment on an airplane? Would the 60L model fit?

Responded on

Given that the dimensions of the bag in question are 28 x 13 x 13 inches, and most airlines have a restriction of 45 linear inches for carry-on baggage, I would say they would probably oppose you taking this on to try and stuff into an overhead compartment. While I would have to guess the dimensions of overhead compartment bins vary slightly from airline to airline, I would assume that they would be pretty stringent about sticking to their listing allowance for bag dimensions involving carry-ons.
Regarding the 60L model, I would check the measurement specs; if they are, linearly, 45 - 46 inches, I would say you're fine to take in aboard.
Hope this helps.

I have the 60L Black Hole duffel and it works great as a carry-on and fits nicely in the overhead bin (even when completely full). I am looking to purchase the 90L model as well, but based on checking it out at a store over the weekend, I think it is too big to predictably fit in an overhead bin.

I have a couple 60Ls that I use extensively for carry-on travel. 60L is perfect. 90L is too big for a carry-on

So far so goood!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Only took it on one trip so far. Initial impression is that it seems smaller than it is. 90L should be a lot bigger than my 70L pack, but doesn't feel that way. Time will tell if I'll buy the bigger one.

Sturdy straps and nice big zippers. Looking forward to keep testing it.

The Black Hole is awesome and I would highly recommend it. The thought of stitching failure or tears never crossed my mind. I wouldn't say water proof because I feel nothing is waterPROOF. However, I'd put $100 in it and toss it in the dishwasher with full expectations of retrieving the dry money afterwards.

I ended up returning this because I felt it didn't suit what I originally had planned for it. Product-wise though I would recommend it for sure.

These are the best duffles!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have owned many duffles over the years, and have to say that these are the best constructed I have ever owned. The material, straps, clips, zipper, and arm strap are all high quality. I own the 60L and then bought the 90L. The 60L is great for the weekend, and the 90L for a week!

Tough, practical bag

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I originally bought the 45 Duffel - 2746cu in and found it to be too small for what I wanted (mostly travel). This size is perfect for short and long trips, because you can fit a lot into it as well as carry it around easily. The material, zippers, and straps are all durable. I ordered it in Peppergrass Green and the color is pretty spot on in the picture. I look forward to this being a staple in my luggage.

Best Bag Ever!!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used this bag on multiple ski trips, traveling, camping, small hikes, etc.. Love it! Water proof, zippers sealed nicely. The backpack straps are super nice to have, especially when I give these to the kids to pack their gear in. I have now purchased every size of this bag and they ALL are solid. I wouldn't buy any other.

Awesome Product, as you would expect!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I needed a bag for a week long mountain bike trip. I knew that our duffles would be tossed around a fair bit, possibly strapped on top of a van, maybe left out in the rain, yet would need to hold all of my clothes & bike gear for a week. After lusting after these duffles for a few years I finally bit the bullet and bought one (at retail price- which I rarely do!), and I have to say, it's worth it. I got the 90L size, which fits everything I could possibly need, or carry. I maxed it out at about 45 lbs, so didn't have to pay extra to fly with it. Plus, when wheeling a bike box through the airport, having this thing on my back was a life saver. It's a great looking bag, everyone was jealous of it. Since I got back from that trip, I've found myself reaching for it whenever I've needed a bag for a weekend trip. Perhaps I'll get a smaller size eventually as well, but for now I'll just throw everything I need in it even if it's a bit overkill... since I like it so much! Patagonia rarely lets me down; this bag is no exception.

This pack rocks !!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this to use as a soccer bag (I coach a kids team). It holds 3 balls, tarp, jerseys, cones, pylons, first aid kit, pump etc... The exterior looks tough and easy to clean. And the backpack straps are essential as I also carry 2 goals and a cooler. The green is an awesome color too!

Bring the kitchen sink

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Well, with this bag you can.

HUGE bag, fits basically everything you need for a long trip. Durable and backpack straps make it easy to carry.

Downside, since it it so large and you can fit so much in it, it is easy to get the weight close to or over 50lbs. And try carrying a 50+lb bag around without wheels ... not so easy.

I do like this bag, and think it is great for packing for multi-sport trips (camping, biking, hiking in one vacation), but just be sure you can carry it all while packing. The stronger you are the more you get to pack :)

Mine is going to be riding a yak!

I bought the 90L Black Hole Duffel for a 3-week trek in Nepal this coming Fall. I haven't yet used it, but I have thoroughly checked it out. My main criteria was to find a waterproof bag that could take a beating, get dirty and clean up easily, that also had backpack straps for easy carrying from airport to yak. This bag seems to fit the bill. The quality of the bag is top notch. The semi-slick surface should wipe down easily. And it has the backpack straps which can be easily removed.
It has two interior mesh pockets and one exterior pocket and elastic loops on the exterior so that you can clip stuff to your bag or slip stuff into the loops.
Very roomy. Looking forward to using it!
