    Defies physics.

Tell your astrophysicist and sci-fi friends that Patagonia found out what's in a black hole, or at least the Black Hole 60L Duffel Bag: your climbing, hiking, and traveling gear from your last five-day trip. Inspired by rugged-yet-light alpine packs, the Black Hole features a burly ripstop fabric filmed in a TPU laminate and coated with DWR for the ultimate in outdoors protection. The padded base protects your gear throughout the trip, and Patagonia padded the removable shoulder strap and removable backpack straps for comfort. Internal organizers and zippered mesh pockets organize all the small things, while the external side pocket stows the duffel for compact storage. Compression straps prevent your gear from bouncing around whether you're traveling via airplane or four-wheeler.

    The perfect bag

This is the best thing ever. It's the perfect size for a plane carry on and holds SO much stuff. Also has straps to wear as backpack. Black hole is the right name for this. Would definitely recommend, it's amazing. Great fabric too.

      Put your stuff in it

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The 60L is the perfect carry on size. The shoulder straps make it a breeze to get through the airport. Plus it's VERY durable and waterproof. I bought one for the Mrs as well. They'll get a ton of use!

      Amazing travel bag

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I used this bag for a trip to the Peak District in Northern England. I was able to fit a trad rack, 60m rope, shoes, harness and chalk bag along with clothes to keep me comfortable and clean for a week. No easy feat considering the variable weather over there. The Black Hole fit easily in the overhead bin on the plane ride out and makes a great carry-on.

      Awesome bag!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I can't stand rolly, hard frame suitcases, even the softsided ones that pretend to be duffles. This bag goes from plane to boat to truck with no problems. It's durable, water proof and the shoulder straps help me get it through the airport. Highly recommended!

      best bag

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

this bag will hold all of your gear and keep it safe from the elements!
so if you need a decent bag, that can stand up to anything you throw at it. then get this one!!

Let me tell you about this duffel..

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This duffel kills it. It's the perfect go to bag for climbing, traveling, or just a sweet gym bag. Its durable, easy to carry, and performs! Took it on some day climbs, and I never ran out of places to stuff gear. If you are like me and tend to bring extra everything because all your friends love to forget stuff and not figure it out until they are at the wall... then this is the bag for you. even when I finally stuffed it to the brim, i was able to hook so much more gear to the outside of the bag. I hooked up the shoulder straps and boom, all set to haul up the trail. I highly recommend this bag, guarantee you will use it frequently! If you have any questions, feel free to email me directly! Always happy to offer more praise for this duffel!

      Great Complement To 45L

I've got the 45L Black Hole and love it for weekend trips but was looking for something a little bigger and this is perfect. On paper, it's just larger than the maximum airline overhead carry-on dimensions but I haven't run into any issues given its soft nature. I particularly like the laminated ripstop fabric construction. The one feature I felt like the 45L was missing was backpack straps so it's great to see those added. I also like the addition of the internal compression straps. I wish they'd kept a removable shoulder strap or at least attachments as well but the handles on the site work well enough.

        Duffle for Days

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

If you are looking for a bag for weekend adventures, week long trips, or a gear bag to keep in your car, this is the bag for you. My girlfriend and I each have one and love them. Although we've only had them for a month or two, we've taken them on short car camping trips and weeklong trips to Lake Powell. We are currently prepping to use them on a 2 1/2 week trip to Europe and we couldn't be more excited.

This bag fits so much stuff. The outside material makes me not feel bad for throwing this bag around or getting it dirty. The extra compartments give just the right amount of organization. and the straps for backpack use are surprisingly comfortable. If anyone is looking for a multi-use duffle this would be my first and only recommendation.

        Weekend Warrior

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

In my opinion, this is THE ideal size for a duffle. Not so big that you're losing stuff in the corners, and not so small it's only good for a night away--it's jussssst right.

I've mostly used it for a bag when I'll be gone for a few days--it's perfect for the weekend. I can fit a few pairs of pants, couple shirts, a light jacket, a down sweater and some shoes. There are two inside pockets for small personal items, and an outside pocket for socks and undies.

I love a good zipper (I tend to overstuff) and these zippers are rock solid--they can easily take my abuse. The material of the duffle itself is like an armored car--nothing is getting in, or out. If you find yourself in an unexpected downpour as you take down your tent (been there) you can rest assured your goods inside the bag will stay dry. The bottom fabric is thick, and built to last--my 80lb lab has made this her bed in the back of my car more than once, and the bag still looks new.

This was my first Black Hole Duffle and I'm definitely sold!

        The JAM.

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This bag is awesome! It packs small when it's not full and when you want to carry a TON of stuff, it works great! The backpack straps make it super nice to carry through an airport or tight places with.

        Black Hole 60L

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is an awesome travel bag! It's the perfect size for carry on because it's got the space to hold your essentials for a week long trip while still being able to fit in the overhead compartment no problem. The backpack feature is pretty sweet too

How does the backpack straps attatch to bag?

        Unanswered Question

This DRW coating is not explained. Please elaborate.
Is this duffel waterproof? Can it be made waterproof? If so what to use for waterproofing?

Hi , has anyone taken this bag as carry on luggage in a plane? Do you know if it's too big? Many thanks!

How do you fold it back into its pocket for storage?

        Unanswered Question

What are the interior colors and how dark/light is it for the interior of all the duffle colors available including classic red? I'm looking for interior colors that are light so it is easier to find things. I don't want to be lost in a "black hole"!

Does this bag have the traditional single over the shoulder strap or just the backpack style straps?

        Is the 60L carry-on size?

        Agnes,

Most US carry-on restrictions are in the neighborhood of 22" x 14" x 9" -- the 60L Black Hole is ~25" x 13" x 10". I've used it as a carry-on five or six times, but not fully packed. If it were 100% full, packed to the gills, you might not get away with it, but for the most part, I'd say yes, it'll work fine as a carry-on.

Let me know if you have any other questions-- I'd be happy to help! I can be reached via email at llabar@backcountry.com or 801.736.6399.

I packed mine to the gills, and though it was about 2.5 inches over the total restriction for American Airlines, no one said a word to me about it, maybe because I had it on my back, and most backpacks are well within guidelines. So for me, this was awesome as a carry on, and I loved getting to use it as a "backpack". But beware that different airlines have different restrictions and also have an up-charge if you claim it as a checked bag AT the airport (rather than doing it online beforehand). But some airlines also let things slide. Worst case scenario, they may tell you it's too big at the gate--just take a couple things out of it and squeeze it down to make it fit in their little size-tester-thingamajigs (something you can't do with a boxy suitcase)--it can surely take the rough handling! :) Good luck!!!

Wondering why they went to 900d from the previous version that is 1200d and how that is heavier duty than the previous version.

Hello uraudi, what a good question. The previous model was made with 14.7-oz. 1,200-denier 100% polyester, whereas the new model is made with 15-oz. 900-denier 100% polyester ripstop. The fabric's weight does affect abrasion resistance, so the newer model is made with "ripstop" polyester, whereas the previous model--though coming in at 1200d--is not listed as ripstop (ripstop refers to the weaving of fibers into the fabric into a diamond or square shape that, when punctured or torn, are better able to stop the tear from growing). You can actually see the difference in the fabric, with the one the right being the new, 900d polyester ripstop (see the characteristic ripstop squares?) with the one on the left being the older model. So, the bottom line is the integrity might be even better in the new model, despite the difference in denier.

        I hope that helps!

What are the differences between this and the previous version other than a $10 difference. It also looks like the external attachment points are shifted a bit. Anything else?

great question. The Black Hole bags were fully redesigned for this season.

        Here are the updates:

        New more durable fabric.

Updated pack strap interface - more secure and easier to take on and off

        Internal compression straps

The entire bag self stuffs into the front pocket

(we should have a video available soon detailing all of the updates as well)
