I know it's in here somewhere...

Built with double-thick fabric, reinforced stitches, and a waterproof coating, the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag 120 is tougher than a white rhino and hungry for all your gear. Padded shoulder straps convert this bag to a backpack-style hauler when you're tired from travel, and burly end handles put up with years of pulling, pushing, and dragging. Since Patagonia knows you value the environment, it used environmentally-conscious polyester in the Black Hole's construction and gave you an external organizer pocket for stashing your hemp lip balm.
  • Removable shoulder straps with a padded back panel offer a comfortable long-haul carry solution
  • Double-layer fabric is abrasion-resistant and coated with water-resistant DWR to keep your gear dry
  • Four corner-mounted webbing daisy chains give you a place to tie down big loads

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Solid bag at premium price for a duffel? That said?seems like you?ve got to spend a chunk of money to get the water resistant, reinforced construction of the Black Hole and comparable duffels (TNF for instance). Swallows gear. Thoughtful and useful interior zip pockets in lid of bag. Exterior zip pocket on front of bag for anything you need to get at quickly. Few things to keep in mind?the bigger bags are quite big?they?ll swallow enough gear that hand carrying, using the backpack straps and keeping under 50lbs for airline travel are troublesome. Water resistant?not water proof?I wouldn?t use it in place of a proper dry bag on a river trip, but throwing it down on wet ground or even periods of rain have not imparted moisture to anything inside yet. There are no built in compression straps, so if partially filled, things can move around inside easily. There are built in webbing loops on the outside so you can use your own webbing, rope, cam straps etc., for compressing the bag or lashing to something else.

Just misses.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Although this duffel is simple and functional, it has two flaws that make it a return item in my opinion. No compression straps - a must for a soft style bag - if you have to carry it on your back, it flops around. Also, the tote and back straps are sewn on in a 1" square and don't extend down the sides for reinforcement. Its competitors have both features.
Too bad since the 120 L size is just right.

Please use caution in purchasing:

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This will ruin all other bags one owns. Easy to pack, easy to get into. Simple. Only gripe is sometimes the shoulder straps work themselves loose. Easy fix. The bag itself is not waterproof (like a dry bag) but you can leave it out and as long as its not in a puddle, I haven't had any problem with water getting into the bag.

What is your confirmed "easy fix" for this?

I love this bag! I've used it on 3 trips now, fits everything I need.

A picture is worth . . .

We have extensively used the 120L and the 60L for international travel. They are amazing. Here, in Komodo National Park Indonesia, getting ready to board a liveaboard dive boat. Rugged, water proof, light weight and attractive. These are, quite simply, the best duffels I have ever owned.

Is the bag too big for traveling? I'll mainly have shoes and clothing in it. Or do you think the 90L one should be enough?

Responded on

Best thing is likely to check dimensions and decide which size is best for your needs. I don't know how big your shoes are. :)

Perfect for body relocation...

So Light and easy to cram in any space. Ended up buying 4 sizes in total.

The 120, in particular, was big enough to hide a dead hooker from wife and the water tight fabric prevented any leakage issues...

Yay for the black hole!

This bag can not only fit a grown woman.....Yup I got in there, it is also our go to bag for schlepping our ski and camping gear. Super durable and great for road trips.

no frills quality

Just what you would expect from Patagonia. Utilitarian - well thought out and high quality as well as understated good looks.

Great For expeditions

I love this pack. you can fit a few different packs and equipment in one which is nice when traveling on a plane with your mountaineering partner. If you are carrying a lot of gear for an extended period of time this pack will allow you to carry a ton of gear and you might make it in one bag, or maybe two of these. They could be used for a lot of different applications, travel, fishing trips, and leisure. I use them when traveling overseas to Asia and South America on mountaineering and trail running adventures. They are strong durable and can take a hell of a beating.

pretty sweet

Just moved with this and was able to fit a lot more than i thought I would. Too big for cary on fyi but worked out awesome for in car and up and down stairs. Pack straps were easy to get on and off. The bag is pretty soft and pliable which i liked in the end. I have MHW duffel that is pretty rigid. The zipper on the black hole was easier to get shut and was really secure. Easy to get things in and out of, love the wide opening

What the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag in Mango really looks like.

120L = 7320 cubic inches...

Just to give you a size comparison when looking at this bag v. the TNF Duffel this bag is between the TNF L and XL sizes (5600 and 9030 cubic inches respectfully).
Hope this helps when comparing!!! We all know size matters, right ladies??? ha...

carry-on-able? just wondering if it is small enough to get through security

Responded on

Mat, I don't think you will be able to get this through security as a carry on.

Responded on

For reference, you can typically get up to a ~40L duffel through, and this one is 120. WAY too big.

Check out the Black Diamond Demon - its taper fits perfectly in overhead bins.

Best Answer Responded on

Go for the Black Hole Duffel 60 (or the Lightweight Travel Duffel that you also had a question about) - both are perfect carry-on size.

are there sternum straps on this item....

are there sternum straps on this item. Also I was comparing it to the stoic but they don't list the volumes on the various sizes. could you please shed some light on this.
Thank you

Responded on

The straps can be used as shoulder straps similar to the TNF duffel.

Best Answer Responded on

There is no sternum strap. This is about 1.75 times bigger than the size L stoic bag. This is also much nicer and easier to get into.
