Crazy warm jacket - big for a small gal

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: xs

I recently ordered this jacket directly from patagonia because they had an older color on sale for about $160. That would be a total steal for this jacket...if it fits you. I'm 5'1" 110lbs and got an xs. It fit okay, but I could've layered two fleeces under it no problem...not that you would need to because its the warmest jacket I've ever put on! Point being, I was looking for a smaller fit since this is a stand alone item - not really meant for layering. If you don't mind looking like you're wearing your boyfriends jacket and need serious warmth, then this is definitely for you. If you're small like me, you might have a hard time with how giant this makes you look.
Note - this is not at all a packable jacket - that wasn't a problem for me, but don't expect this thing to get stuffed into your pack without taking up as much room as your sleeping bag. The canvas with dwr is mostly to blame for that, but its that outer shell that makes this jacket so bulletproof. Also, the outer hand pockets are super soft inside, but do not have a zip or button closure. Had I kept this, I probably would've added a sewn-in button or snap to make sure stuff couldn't fall out if the pockets bulged open.

    Warm and fashionable

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Medium

I bought medium size which I could have room to add layer underneath if the weather gets colder.

    Lint magnet!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

I loved this jacket...until I wore it with a sweater. It was covered in lint! And then I was petting my father in law's lab and it got covered in dog hair. This jacket is warm and cozy, but had to be lint brushed with each wear...That's something I don't want to have to do to my winter jacket! Unfortunately, I'm sending it back. Thankfully, Backcountry has an excellent return policy!

Warm and tough, but attracts lint

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small

I am 5'8" 120 pounds and a size small fits me well. I have a long torso and this jacket sits at my hips and I can wear 1-2 layers underneath comfortably. The outer material is tough but it shows lint like crazy-oddly enough my dogs' hair doesn't stick to it as much as everyday lint does. The jacket is not lightweight but if you want a warm and tough down jacket that won't rip open on every little tree branch, I would recommend it. Maybe not in black if lint drives you crazy!

    Love this coat!

I bought this to use as my general purpose "around town" jacket for winter in West Yellowstone, MT. To give you an idea of the winter here, I'm writing on November 21 and it's -7F outside. This jacket is warm and comfortable, even down to these chilly temps!

    PROS:
    - Inside collar (where your chin goes when it's all zipped up) pockets, and sleeve cuffs are lined with super soft suede-like fabric that doesn't catch when your hands get chapped (because eew, that's the grossest feeling ever)
    - Top zipper is covered so it doesn't make your face cold
    - Collar is super puffy and keeps your neck warm
    - Waterproof fabric on shoulders / chest / back is nice if it's wet out, even though the regular fabric holds its own against water pretty well
    - Dropped hem on the back is nice for keeping you covered if you're bending over
    - Sizing is great, fits very well
    - Sleeves are lined with silk so your long sleeve shirts don't get all bunched up when you put them on

    CONS:
    - My fiance grumbles because now he can't get the men's version
    - If you get the jacket you probably won't get the vest, which is a bummer
    - It does show white dog hair, but it's easy enough to remove with a lint roller

Love, love, LOVE this coat! Stoked to have it for like 40 more years.

    Love this coat!
