Patagonia couldn’t have picked a better name for the Men’s Better Sweater Fleece Jacket. After one day in the Better, you’ll probably throw out your cotton sweatshirt. After all, why would you wear fleece every day in the mountains and then go back to cotton in town? Despite the casual cut and style, this Patagonia fleece easily makes the cut for technical wear. Midweight fleece makes this piece ideal as both a mid-layer and a casual around-town top.
Very comfortable, casual piece for around town. I wear it to work as well, the grey with black shoes and jeans looks good. It is warm, very soft fleece. Combined with a Beta AR shell it keeps me pretty warm in Ohio. I am am 5'11'' and 185lb (athletic), anything that is slim fit I wear a large, this one is regular fit so a medium fits perfect.
trying to decide on a jacket that can be used in the fall and spring around town, but also be layered under a shell when it gets colder. looking at this (the better sweater) and the marmot powder 8, any suggestions? if it helps i live in the north east but snowboard and travel out west during the winter
am 6'3" low 40's chest with near 36 in. arms. as for fit i needed an xl and it fits fine - as long as nothing to bulky underneath. an ls-tee shirt or short sleeve shirt is all that i can comfortably wear underneath. i also have an r2 jacket in near same weight. this item appears to be a trimmer fitting piece of apparel. on a chilly day it is great, if there is wind it is porus but it does fit underneath a patagonia alpine wind jacket (toasty) or a packable raincoat if its wet and windy.
good for chilly-ness better as a sharp looking layer.

I'm 5'9"/180cm and 165lbs/75kg, wearing size medium in all my Patagonia jackets and in my synchilla fleece. Fits perfect! Now I've read different reviews and I'm not sure if a size medium would be perfect for the Better Sweater, too?!
The medium might be a bit big on you. I am 5'11'' and 185lb (athletic). At first I got a large because I wear R1 in large. But the large was baggy on me so I returned it for a medium which fits great.
Steven, I think a medium will be right on the money for you. I have not experienced the Better Sweater fitting drastically different from other current Patagonia pieces.
I've mainly only been wearing my Better Sweater for casual wear, and I love it. It's super soft and comfy, and fits my skinny tall frame perfectly. Has a fairly loose weave so the wind cuts through it pretty easily, which I usually don't mind living in southern California. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for anything super technical, as it is a more casual piece, but I think it could hang pretty well on some active pursuits.
Patagonia fleece jackets seem to be all over the place with their fits, but this one fits great. It has somewhat of an athletic fit and is a great casual fleece/sweater. I only wish it had the chest pocket like the hoody does.
This sweater has a great fabric, color and texture. The fleece inside feels great. It's more of a sweater than a jacket. Could use another pocket or two. However, it is too tight in the shoulders. It seems too tight and constricts under the arms during any movement. At 5'9" and athletic build, the medium was fine in the body, but if you have big shoulders as I do, the sweater is too tight. A large would be fine in shoulders but huge in the body. The arms run long, so a large won't work. So, I had to return it. Too bad.
