Depends on the size of the coffee mug honestly. I have the Beeline Backpack and it's only good for small to medium sized water bottles. Backcountry.com will replace the product or give you a refund if your water bottle doesn't fit and you're not happy with the pack

is the zipper in front of the main compartment for a front compartment
is the zipper in front of the main compartment for a front compartment or the "top" compartment? i thinks the specs are mistaken

You are correct, there are two 'front' compartments, the second one just being slightly smaller. The 'top' compartment is very small, and lies just behind the main front compartment. And each front compartment has it's own internal mesh compartment. Hope this helps.
