The Patagonia Men’s Alpine Wind Jacket is a versatile, lightweight windshirt built for blustery alpine conditions. Wear it alone on breezy multi-pitch rock routes, or layer under your shell when you click into your skis for a tour. The brushed mesh lining adds a touch of warmth and helps wick moisture, while the stretch-woven underarm panels increase air flow on strenuous pitches or steep skin tracks. A DWR coating on the ripstop shell sheds light rain and snow when the clouds roll in.

Bottom Line: As a shell or a layer, this jacket excels in windy alpine conditions.

Awesome Spring jacket

By:
April 18, 2010

I am loving this jacket right now. Its the time of year where your softshell (BC welder) is too much, your fleece is too hot (Patagonia LW R4) and a short sleeve just isnt enough. That is where this jacket shines. Super light and comfortable and enough insulation to keep me warm on those high 40s to low 50s days. Im 6'1 185 and the medium fits awesome for an athletic fit. I would like maybe another inch in the torso, but its not enough to take away from the overall quality of this jacket. Buy it.

You won't find a more versatile jacket. It's warm but not too hot, it breathes well and is water resistant. I use it on my bike commute and absolutely love it. It's light so I can take everywhere. All in all very happy with the purchase.

How is the fit of this jacket?

Plan on using it with just a tshirt under and I do much prefer a trim fit.

Theoretically I am more medium than small - but the jacket being a regular fit (not a trim fit), is there any chance a small will fit on me??

What is your experience, how 'roomy' is fit of this jacket?

By the way, I am 6.1tall 165lb - chest is 39 - tall and skinny/athletic some might say..

Anyone??

Thanks.

I am essentially your exact same dimensions (6' 1/2" with long arms, same weight and chest size) and would strongly recommend the size M. I've found that the Pata descriptions of fit (trim, regular, etc.) aren't always to be believed. This jacket has long arms which made it fit well on me, while the torso fit was trim and about perfect while wearing a t-shirt/base layer (whether short or long sleeved, or a slightly heavier layer like a close-fitting R1 top).

Go-to Jacket

By:

This is an amazing jacket that seems to be able to handle almost anything. I have a size medium in blue and I am 5'10'' 150lb. The sleeves are baggy enough for more bulkier layer but the torso length can be a little short if you have a longer torso.

I have used this jacket primarily to trail run and mountain biking, and I like the fact that it can stuff into its napoleon pocket so you can just throw it in your bag and forget about it till you need it. I would highly recommend this product given its price, plus you get a high quality piece of patagonia equipment.

living in it

I have spent more time in this jacket the past two months than any other piece of clothing I own. The Alpine Wind Jacket is the perfect spring and fall piece to always have with you. The exterior fabric is very soft, almost with a buttery feel to it. And the interior mesh lining is soft as well, offering a little bit of insulation, and a soft feel against your skin if worn over a t-shirt. It does well in light rain and protects really well against the wind. I've worn it as an every day jacket, hiking, biking, and ski touring as well. You won't be disappointed if you pick this jacket up.

Why does this weigh twice as much as the comparable marmot/driclime ion windshirt?

It does not. My Marmot Driclime weighs 13oz and my Patagonia alpine wind jacket weighs 10.5oz. You must be comparing the weight of the Marmot Ion to the Patagonia alpine wind jacket and they are totally different jackets. The Patagonia Houdini is similar to the Ion and is lighter at 3.7oz. Both Patagonia jackets are far superior than there Marmot counterparts.

The Patagonia Alpine Wind jacket has a light lining, so it will be warmer than the Marmot Ion. The Marmot Ion is most similar to the Patagonia Houdini, but the Houdini is about 15% lighter and packs to a smaller size, for about double the price...

Surprising!

By:

Purchased this as a gift for boyfriend, so I relied on the size chart which is accurate. He's 6' and an athletic 185-190 lbs and the fit of the large was great, just as expected.

It's incredible how much protection this soft (nice to the touch!) and lightweight jacket provides! It seems like everything would go through it -- rain, wind, chill -- but it handles them quite well. He tested it in 34-degree weather with only a cotton long-sleeve shirt; it should be a bit warmer for only that sort of insulation, but it will work well with different layers -- either underneath or over -- to meet just about any condition within reason.

Additionally, it's so thin and lightweight that it can pack down to an incredibly small package. Will work well when we travel abroad during the spring and fall -- it could be crammed just about anywhere! ;-)

Overall, is a nice, thin option for weather in the Pacific Northwest!

first use review

just purchased an xl patagonia alpine wind jacket
i am 6'3" with 36" or so arms and i must say the arm length and elastic mini-cuff for me is perfect. short jacket arms are a problem i have with some other makers.

fit is trim but generous enough for underneath layering - flannel shirt or sweater., if necessary.

i used the jacket on a a bike ride in mid 40's temps at about 14mph in regular 10-12mph wind gusts wearing a tank top and a lightweight capilene LS crew underneath the jacket.

it does block the wind well and i was quite comfortable in with the temps in the 40s and gusts...in sun i even got warm and unzipped the jacket to cool off.

another great feature is its packability. i placed a key ring clip on the loop inside the chest pack-pocket so i can hang the jacket to a belt loop or compress it to my bike frame when i dont need to wear it.

i cant comment on durability claims as of yet.
the loose ripstop does flap in the wind but that isnt particularly a concern of mine, others may differ.

the exterior ripstop is smooth and soft...and would work well underneath a heavier outer layer.

i have an older r2 fleece zip-up jacket of nearly identical size and shape as the wind jacket..in colder temps without much physical activity the r2 would likely make an excellent insulating outer layer while the wind jacket (with waist drawstring) would keep out chilling winds.

its pretty cool thus far.

product has held up well after several wearings (casual and urban cycling) and 3 washings.
additionally, after evening jogs in only a ls capilene or ls teeshirt in 30 degree temps i decided to try to keep my upper body warmer and began using the alpine wind jacket. it was just the piece of apparel i needed.
it completely blocks out the chilly winds (from jogging and natural) and is very light and friction free.
with temps in the 30s my upper body stays warm and loose.
with the zip turtle neck up wind doesnt creep in from the top.
i purchased mine from an online retailer for about 69.00 and am seriously considering getting another.

as for questions regarding fit....i am 6'3" and about 185 with low 40ish chest and i would say that with basically any shirt on underneath the fit would accurate and good.

Use to be my favourite jacket

By:
October 11, 2009

Just purchased this jacket 30th of Sept. 2009 and returned 10th of Oct. 2009. It is a great jacket for windy and cold morning walking to work BUT... After not even 2 weeks using this jacket and carry a bag to work material just worn out at the stitches. I returned this jacket to the store and waiting for refund. However Patagonia recommend this jacket as a good windproof lightweight product bit apart of this the material is very week and no worth money I paid for.

Only 2 stars, however I found this jacket as a PERFECT purchased on the beginning.
