Pacific Outdoor Equipment Crank Backpack - 2135cu in

Wider and deeper than some of Pacific Outdoor Equipment's other bike commuting packs, the tough Crank Backpack has internal pockets and a large flap-top opening to make it easy to haul it all. Stash a day's worth of books, a spare layer, and a lunch inside this pack and hit the pavement. Padded shoulder straps take the bite out of a particularly heavy load, and a reflective stripe down the pack helps you stay visible in traffic at dusk.

Bottom Line: Built for commuters who need to carry a little extra.

On a happier note, the side zippered pocket is large enough to comfortably store items small regularly accessed items, like a cell phone, headphones, pen---and even a camping spork. =) The bag is comfortable to wear while riding, as well as just around town. POE could do with moving the inner mesh pocket to the inner front of the bag, though, and possibly securing it there (like REI does with their Flash packs), as it tends to get in the way just hanging loose inside the bag (with a few items inside it); I find myself flipping it out of the way a lot in order to put a laptop sleeve behind it.

Pacific Outdoors Crank Backpack

Received one of these for Xmas last year. It works great for my bike commute to work in the rainy pac NW. Keeps my stuff dry and is a comfortable fit. 3 internal and one external pockets work fine to keep your small stuff segregated. Plenty of room for extra layers, my work clothes, lunch, occasional laptop, etc.

Two complaints about the bag: first one is minor but annoying. The chest harness strap mounts to the shoulder straps on fabric rails so that they can be moved vertically. Problem is the strap has a tendency to break away from the shoulder strap with only moderate pressure. For example turning your torso in the saddle looking for cars behind you can cause the chest strap to pull away. The chest strap is critical as the bag won't stay on your back while riding without it. All told this requires me to stop every now and again to reattach. Like I said mainly annoying, especially in dark & rain when your glasses fog up on stops.

The second complaint is worse. After about 3 months of use the bag's main closure strap pulled out of its stitching at the top of the bag. I was not overfilling or wrenching on this strap. The bag is useless without this strap. I currently have the closure strap tied onto the handle as a work around. I plan to send back for warranty repairs/replacement after the rain stops (~July) and I can use my old backpack. I will update this review hopefully after repairs/replacement with company's response.

Bag would've gotten at least 4 stars w/o the two above issues.

I am so disappointed to hear about these design flaws. I've had a Pacific Outdoor equipment biking bag for about 7-8 years now - I've loved it. It has a zipper feature. The issue for me is that one of my dogs chewed the zipper last night and so I am trying to find a replacement and went right to this company since my other POE backpack had served me so well. Gosh- should I try this replacement?

moh5542018, I had that exact same thing happen to me regarding the main strap---and I, too, have since tied the strap to the handle in the interim. I'd only had the bag about a month or less, myself. I wrote Pacific Outdoor Equipment through their website contact page about a month ago, but haven't heard back from them yet. While I like their asthetic design, I'm not sure I'll purchase one of their products anytime soon (at least, not until they fulfill their guarantee to replace the bag because of shoddy workmanship, and/or demonstrate that their newer products won't fail like this one did).
