Yakima KingPin 4 - 2007

The Yakima KingPin 4's bike arms fold down easily with the new Quick Cam lever when the bikes are removed. The mast also folds down conveniently when free of bikes for vehicle access. The KingPin 4 carries almost all bikes without needing top-tube adaptors. The SwitchBlade anti-sway bike cradles keep your bikes scratch free until you inflict your own damage on the ride. The KingPin 4 holds up to 4 bikes, and fits a 2” receiver hitch. Optional accessories include the DeadLock System [YAK0135], 1 ¼” adapter [YAK0141], and PowderHorn ski and snowboard rack [YAK0134].

Bottom Line: If you don't like being tied down, the KingPin 4 gives you freedom to add options and accessories to your bike rack.

Gets the job done conveniently

I bought the Kingpin to transport the family's bikes on vacation to and take my roadbike to and from group rides. It performs flawlessly. I was a little worried about buying a rack that grabs the bike on the frame, as opposed to the wheel/fork, but I haven't noticed any wear on the frame to date. Being able to take the rack on and off the car quickly won out over a roof mounted system. The only pain is needing to buy an additional hitch adapter to go back and forth between receiver hitches was the only issue I had.

great bike rack

By:

Wow, this rack is great. It holds four bikes with great stability and a nice hitch mount. I could not be happier.

I also looked at the Thule racks; this is a much better piece of gear. The Thule hitch pin is one sided, and does not fit all the way through the hitch unless you buy their locking kit.

KingPin4 Bike Hitch

By:
September 27, 2004

Everything abut the rack is superb. It is most unfortunate that there are reports growing in number of these hitch racks being stolen right off the back of vehicles. My only comment then would be to change the design so that racks can be locked at the two points of attachment: (1) at the hitch to the vehicle, and (2) at the hinged-area.

King Pin 4

Rack fits well and carried 4 bikes wonderfully. The fold-down arms allowed us to leave the rack mounted on the vehicle when we were parked and no worries about it getting hit.

A solid rack with easy to use straps.

By:

The KingPin 4 is easy to use and keeps bikes stable and secure. We used a bungee cord to keep it from rattling when just driving around with no bikes on it. Also, make sure that your hitch is rated for this rack. 1 1/4" Class I receivers have a notch that will not allow this rack to slide all the way in to the receiver, even though they are rated for carrying 200 lbs. However, once we figured this out, the rack is great - easy to get off/on, put bikes on, store, etc.

Big and Burly

Fits all the bikes for you and your crew. Very solid and very stable. Be careful with little bikes though, the stabilizers make it difficult to get my girlfriend's 16-inch frame mountain bike on it.

KingPin 4 is Great

By:
August 15, 2005

I've been in love with my bike rack since the minute I received it. I can put all my bikes (4) on it and just go. It's very easy to install and you don't have to worry about the bikes scratching each other or the vehicle. Once again, great rack. Will recommend it to everyone.

Solid Rack

By:
September 22, 2006

This is a really sturdy, solid rack. Even with having to put my son's bike upside down due to the chunky frame, it didn't sway while driving. There are 3 thick rubber tabs per bike used to hold the frames in place and they are really strong but easy to snap into place. Each spot has a "V" shaped cradle that you can adjust and open or close (to fit the frame under your seat) so the bikes fit really snugly on varying frames. My only complaint is that the bike goes into the hitch with a screw-on bolt. It would be nice to have a removable one (without having to use a wrench) and I worry about the threads wearing down with my constantly taking the rack on and off. But I would definitely recommend this bike to anyone. Very solid.

good

The Kingpin 4 is great. It is very easy to take off with a 7/8 socket wrench - I actually take it off my truck after each ride. Also, invest in a yakima hitch lock to keep the vandals away

Excellent Price/Performance

By:

I shopped all over for a hitch mounted bike rack at stores and the internet. Backcountry had the best price and their service from first contact through delivery was exceptional. The Yakima bike rack is an excellent product and this site did a good job.
