Yakima Hully Rollers Boat Mount

Yakima Hully Rollers are the most righteous thing to happen to boat racks this millennium. Hully Rollers are pivoting U-joint rollers that make loading and unloading your boat a breeze, and fit any hull shape. Save your arm strength for paddling. Brake levers lock the rollers into a fixed position for a secure grip, and padded buckles protect both the boat and vehicle from scratches. Install Hully Rollers quickly and easily onto round OR square bars. Sold in pairs (1 left, 1 right) so you can combine them with Yakima Mako Saddles (put the Makos on the front bar) or another pair of Hully Rollers.

Bottom Line: Hallelujah! Save yourself with the Hully Rollers.

Hully Rollers

Mounted them on my pier to help loading the kayaks, already used them on the car without a problem. Need to order another set for the other side of the pier.

Sounds like a name out of Guys and Dolls

I kinda laughed at the thought of these when I first saw them, but after I watched my girl try to put her boat on top of her dad’s Tahoe I understand their use. These things are great to help with ancient monster boats which seem to way more than solid lead, and they totally help the more petite bodies out there to throw their boats up on huge cars with ease. They’re also super stable when you tie your boat down. A great idea built super functional.

If I have the factory crossbars that came with my vehicle, will I need mighty mounts to use these? (My vehicle is a Toyota Highlander Hybrid) Also, can they be used as the front and back holders or do I need to buy another mounting system as well? I will only be carrying one kayak.

It would probably be best to have another support if you have a sea kayak, but otherwise it really isn't worth it. You can configure a rack at the link at the top of the page, and it can tell you for sure, but I do know you will need at least Universal Mighty Mounts, but maybe just normal Mighty Mounts. That is the part you need to check.

Great Rollers

By:
November 15, 2006

My wife can load and unload her 16-ft kayak all by herself, and they really hold the boat securely once mounted. These mounts are solidly built and easy to use.

Some cautions

By:
June 27, 2003

We use these at the back with saddles in front for our sea kayaks. While they work well when loading, they do not secure the kayak as well as the saddles underway--especially in the wind. We make trips from Wisconsin to South Dakota and other western states and the wind is usually strong. In addition, they don't "mold" to the hull shape as well, and have caused a permanent indentation in the bottom of my wife's kayak. We're going to saddles front and rear. For shorter trips or where wind is not a problem these rollers are great.

Check out Yakima's website, they have the car fitter that will tell you everything, it probably would work but I'm not sure exactly what the x-trail factory bars are like.

Hully Rollers Batman!

By:
June 28, 2005

Thank goodness for these little devices! Now my husband doesn't have to help me position my boat on pads or rails on my car - I can roll the boat up there all by myself! Awesome!

Yakima Hulley Rollers

By:
March 23, 2004

I recently purchased a set of the Hulley Rollers for my kayak - a Wilderness Systems Pungo 140. I must say the rollers make loading and unloading much faster and enjoyable than the old way using the foam blocks. The yak is always centered on the bars. Cuts down the loading time to approx. 10 minutes from start to finish! The only downside is that the whole roller assembly tends to roll on the Yakima mounting bar regardless of how tight you torque the wing nuts down. I remedied the situation by wrapping the bar with black duct tape then placing the roller assembly over the tape. This gives the roller assembly something to "bite" into. No more moving around on the bar! Awesome product. Also great service - had the rollers w/in a couple of days from when the order was placed w/o any special shipping instructions. This is my second time ordering from BackcountryStore.com - I'll definitely be ordering again.

Pros and Cons

By:
July 12, 2004

My wife and I both have kayaks and use the rollers on the back and saddles on the front bars. Loading and unloading is the advantage, but the rollers can put a dent in your kayak if you leave it tied down on the rack too long. Rollers are NOT the thing to use on long trips in my opinion.

Hully Rollers Float My Boat

By:
September 28, 2004

This product makes loading and unloading a kayak by yourself very easy. I have two sets on my 4Runner with Landsharks on the front. Get the boat on the rollers and just roll it up on the roof. Works great, everytime. I'm never going back to saddles. I find you have to lube the roller bushings regularly with silicone based lube for best performance.

The greatest product on the market. Makes loading and unloading a 61lb kayak a breeze, even for this 67 year young kayaker. Absolutely love it.
