Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount - 2007

The Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount lets you load your bike onto your roof rack without needing to remove its front wheel. As one of Yakima's top-shelf models, the HighRoller's automotive finish looks sleek on your vehicle, and it won't harm your favorite bike's paint job because this mount holds onto your bike's wheel, not its frame. This mount carries any bike with wheel sizes 20 to 29 inches and with nearly any tire size, from skinny roadies to three-inch fatties. Even bikes with disc brakes and unique suspension designs can ride on the HighRoller. A sliding wheel tray makes positioning your bike's rear wheel a breeze. This bike mount comes with an integrated SKS cable lock—you need lock cores (sold separately) for it to work.

Bottom Line: Take your bike for a ride with the Yakima HighRoller Mount.

nice rack baby

These are much better racks than the king cobras. They are secure, pretty straight forward to use and look good. These are less flexy than the Cobras and a little more durable too. The cable lock system is nice. The knob system for tightening it up is a little finicky and a bit annoying.

The tray are nice and wide but almost a little too bulky. I would also expect them to be much stiffer for how big they are.

Nice Yakima Rakima

This is my first upright bike rack, but this one is quite nice. Easy to install and load bike. Looks pretty sexy on your ride too. Your bike will rock or shake back and forth a bit on turns and big bumps, but it is not going anywhere.

Difference from the king cobra?

How is this rack different than the king cobra? I assume they made it better, but what makes it so? Improvements on the front wheel lock? Tray? Can this now compete with the Thule Sidearm?

This rack is built better than the cobra. Less structural plastic and more metal. The trays are stiffer and wider. The system for locking the front wheel in is better as well.

This would be my second choice to the side arm. The side arm is cheaper, stiffer, and has less to go wrong with it. These racks have a better locking system and are a little quicker to get a bike in place. Overall you can't go wrong with either. The big thing for me was the cost.

Rock solid... but be careful where you park your car afterwards...

A bit awkward to get the bike up on top of the car, so hopefully you are tall or your ride is low to the ground. But once you get your bike up on this it ain't going nowhere. This system locks the front wheel nice and tight, and works fine with my disc brake mountain bike.

Mounts quick on my Yakima crossbars, so quickly that they might as well have painted "steal me" on the side of it. Will work with the accessory lock housing if you use a nut/washer combo and thread the bolt down through the crossbar mount, however nothing in the instructions mentions this possibility.

I still highly recommend this bike mount, however given how expensive it is Yakima really should have included a better way to secure it to your crossbars so someone doesn't walk off with it while you're out on the trail (thus why I give it 4 stars instead of 5).

Perfect Rack

By:

Bought this because I didn't have a rack that would work for my Enduro. The rack holds it secure, its super easy to use, and I have zero complaints. If you need a rack but don't want it to hold the frame, this is the rack for you.

Yakima HighRoller Upright Bike Mount

I like this rooftop mount. It is fairly easy to load, you can easily lock the frame of your bike to the rack, and I feel it is safe and secure. I would want the design improved before I purchased another however or I would look at the Thule Sidearm. First, the bikes sway quite a bit when using this rack. Although I have gotten over my nervousness in this regard while cruising on the highway, it is still a bit unsettling to see two bikes (I have two of these mounted on my Subaru's factory racks) worth more than my car swaying quite dramatically in the wind. Granted there have never been any issues with the bikes coming off or even getting loose, I would still prefer a more rigid upright setup. I have been able to overcome this design flaw by locking two bikes together (frame to frame) which cuts down on bike movement by about 90%. My next suggestion to Yakima to improve this rack is to make a locking system from the bike rooftop rack to the car's factory/Thule/Yakima/etc. rack. Basically you can lock the bike to the HighRoller (which I like), but you cannot lock the HighRoller to the car's rack (which I don't like).

I have used these racks quite a bit and traveled as long as 7 hours each way on an 80 MPH highway with bikes on top and never had any real problems to speak of. Overall, I would give this rack 4 out of 5 stars, but it could definitely use a bit improvement.
