I have the 32" fairing, and it fits perfectly between the side rails of my 05 Outback (clipped on to my Lowrider rack). The fairing reduces noise, and completes the look of the rack. It's also a great place for your goat stickers!!

Word to the wise- the fairing is BLACK. It will come with white plastic on it. Please take that off, it is a protective coating. I can't tell you how many people I've seem driving around with the plastic still on!!

Absolutely Necessary

By:
November 23, 2009

I hated my Yakima rack before I bought this. I never left it on my car because anything over 30mph sounded like I was riding in a convertible. It was super easy to install and Yakima even includes small removable patches to protect your paint. Now even cruising at 75 I have almost no wind noise and it makes the whole package look a lot cooler.

It depends on the car you drive. According to Yakima's Fit Guide, the most common size for a 48 inch crossbar is a 38 inch fairing. However there are numerous examples of different sizes (from 32" to 44") using a 48 inch crossbar depending on the car you drive...

Noise reduction

By:
January 18, 2008

There are two ways to get rid of wind noise from car racks--Get some good speakers and turn up the volume or install a fairing, Yak or Thule on your rack bars. The fairing is also a nice place to put stickers for whatever else you think is cool. The fairing from Yak works as good as the better looking one from Thule. Hey, all they do is direct fast flowing air over the rack bars. Without the bars, fast flowing air howls, screams and whines. (That's where the good speakers come in handy.) It's all simple aerodynamics. Direct the air flow over the round or square thing that is not aerodynamic and things will settle down. Ask the U. S. Air Force. Ask all those aliens that have those flying saucer things. They know.

Yakima Fairing on 04' WRX Wagon

By:
March 25, 2008

Wind noise was really bugging me after I installed the Yakima cross bars. I decided to get the 38" fairing that Yakima offered to try and reduce the noise. OMG, what a difference it makes. It's almost non-existent now even at highway speeds. Best investment for that peace of mind. I might try the 32" fairing, as my 38" fairing sits on top of the factory roof rails.

Do the math, get a faring, save the world

By:
November 26, 2008

Roof racks rob you of gas milage, most folks who love the outdoors are also concerned with the overall state the of the world. Here is some simple math. My faring increase my gas milage by 1 mpg (from 19 t 20), at $60.00 and $3.00 gas the faring pays for it self after 7220 miles. Americans average about 15,000 miles per year, so the faring pays for it self after six months. Of course this is very simple math, it ignores several variables which are beyond my calculation here, but I think the general concept is sound.

This fairing is awesome, it stops the whistling in my roof rack. Make sure to measure across your roof to see exactly what size you need, the first one I got was too small. Very easy to install, make sure to tighten it down as much as possible.

Saves Gas mileage, whistles

By:
December 1, 2008

Not sure exactly how the gas mileage thing worked, but its obvious, more wind resistant, less gas mileage, and with all that wind getting trapped under your skis or boards or whatever, it definitely helps. I believe this is also the part of my roof rack that whistles when driving over 40-45 mph. Its a real killer when you drive 10-15 k miles a year with it on, so if your not as patient as I, make sure to plug up even more holes where wind rushes through

NO MORE NOISE

By:
April 30, 2003

I don’t know what it is about my car, but when I’m going over 30 with my rack on top it starts screaming at me like a jumbo jet is gonna land overhead. I didn’t know what to do until one day someone explained that the sticker covered piece of plastic in front of their rack—the fairing—wasn’t just a portable sticker holder. This thing rocks…completely eliminates all the sound that my rack made, and neatly stores all or my stickers for me!

I have a bicycle rack on my 2009 VW Jetta that I obtained from Volkswagon. The bar is substantially larger than the bars on my previous Thule set up and apparently VW does not make a Fairing for its bike rack. Does anyone make an adapter that can be used to attach a Thule or Yakima Fairing on a larger bar that the Thule bar?

Fairing review

By:
September 26, 2006

So far, the Yakima system I put together from 3 different suppliers has worked just fine. I bought most components from backcountry.com as was pleased with the price. The system is fairly easy to setup and feels sturdy enough to not worry about putting my new Cannondale on. I certainly would purchase this whole setup again.

Looks good and prevents whistling noises, but I reached up through the sunroof at 70mph and it was vibrating like a guitar string! I'm not thrilled about the little pads that ride on the car's finish, but I don't think they will cause any damage.

Yakima's fairing is designed to fit around the Yakima RoundBars. You would be able to rig the clips around your aero/oval shaped factory cross bars using some zip ties, but the product isn't "designed" for that purpose. That being said, we all know your sticker collection needs a place to live.

You really need to measure the distance between the towers. Your bars, most likely sitck out a bit from the towers so total bar length may not give you the whole story.

The fairing cuts out road noise. I can't tell the difference in sound when comparing my car with no roof rack versus roof rack w/fairing. Yakima's product is also easy to install. I highly recommend purchasing one if you're going to keep your roof rack on full-time. Definitely worth the money.

Boy, what he said. At 37mph I'd get this horrible vibration, so attached a bike tray to the bars, now it kicks in at about 60. Not good. Last resort was the fairing. How a cheap piece of plastic does it I don't know/care, but no more noise! A $50 remedy I'll take...

When I bought my rack I was told that "some anal people feel that have to have them" So I may be one of those but really I don't know how anyone can have a rack and not a fairing. It made of world of difference. You can actually drive with the window down or the sunroof open and enjoy it again. My Aunt and Uncle even borrowed my car before I purchased that fairing and both were appalled at the noise. I would not have a rack without one.
