Yakima Big PowderHound Snow Roof Rack

Instead of trying to cram your boards diagonally across your car's interior, load them on top with the Yakima Big PowderHound Snow Roof Rack. The Big PowderHound holds six pairs of skis or four snowboards. Rubber along these mounts prevents scratches and dings. Getting your gear off your rack is as easy as pushing a button—you can even do it with gloves on.

Bottom Line: Load several ski pairs and boards onto your car's roof with the Yakima Big PowderHound.

no extra hardware needed

By:
December 29, 2009

this rack fit my 2006 subaru outback out of the box unlike other rack options. this rack does sit high enough that two snowboards can be placed binding down without touching the roof. it also comes with extra hardware to give extra clearence if needed for bindings. this rack is listed that it does not come with locks, but they where included in box. the only downside is that it does create a wind vortex noise when driving down the highway without skis or boards on it (maybe not a downside, but voice telling you that you should not be traveling without gear :-)).

Just measured mine on my car. The total width is about 31" or about 75cm. The actual width useable for equiptment is about 23" or roughly 58cm. I snowboard and have two wide versions, and if placed properly I can still fit 4 boards; I have fit 2 snowboards and 3 pair of skis on this at once.

Good overall rack

By:

4 stars due to durability, as the plastic around my lock-cores broke; I can still latch and use them, but can not lock them. Worked for about 75 days. I have a Yukon 168 (wide board) and a Mountain 159 (also wide). I could fit both of them and 2 others on this easily. Also note I did NOT need to use the inclines to do this and I have a Toyota Camry. Stop being lazy and fold your highbacks in completely, then ratchet the straps over them....should let boards fit upside-down on 90% of vehicles; common sense wins, and so do you!

Yes. It comes with two extenders that put the rack on a 15 degree angle so that you can fit snowboard bindings facing towards the car

perfect for getting 4 people's gear to the hills. i would advise caution when it advertises 6 ski capability, unless you are using straight skis of yesteryear. Fat boards only fit 4 on this rack.

Finally my car stays dry!

This rack works great. I have a ford escape with the standard luggage bars on top. The rack fit perfectly and is super easy to install and remove. Had 2 boards and 1 pair of skis almost everyday. The clips/buttons pop right up which makes it quick to load and remove gear. I purchased the locks which can freeze up making it hard to get a key in. Since montana rocks, I never had to lock up my gear so this wasn't really a problem for me. If your driving multiple broke bum buddies to the mountain, this is a great choice.

If you have a factory rack it will mount directly to that. You no longer need mighty mounts which is nice. If you do not have a factory rack, you will need to purchase Yakima round bars.

Nice, basic, dependable rack

By: Backcountry.com Employee
August 5, 2008

Have had the Big PowderHound for over 2 years now and have used the rack during the last 2 winters. The rack is pretty basic, but it's worked great up to this point. My rack is attached to the factory crossbars on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ Mighty Mounts. The only gripe I have w/ the Big PowderHound is that I can't carry snowboards bindings-down because there isn't enough clearance between roof and the rack, but I doubt that most other cars/SUVs would have the same problem. This hasn't really been a big issue for me though, because I'm normally only carrying 2 snowboards on the rack. Overall, I'd say this rack is pretty solid and well made.

On the newer racks height can be elevated (tilts on an angle) to fit upside down snowboard bindings.
