Western Mountaineering MegaLite Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Western Mountaineering gave the Megalite Sleeping Bag a roomy cut for those who want an ultralight bag without the coffin-like feeling. This down bag features insanely lightweight 850-fill goose down and will lull you to sleep on your warm summer backpacking trips and multi-day bike excursions. The bag’s continuous baffles let you sweep the down to the top or bottom of the bag to suit the night’s temps, and the full-length draft tube keeps the chills from sneaking in. And since all Western Mountaineering bags are made right here in the U.S. of A, you know you’re getting a quality product that will last for decades.

Bottom Line: Not just lite, Megalite.

This bag is well worth the hefty $$

For warmer weather and extended hikes, there is not a better bag. Used this in the warm weather portions of my 06 and 08 AT hikes and it never let me down. Very light and even as you drop below the rating on those colder nights, a simple base layer and socks kept me warm. I switched from using the Marmot Pounder simply because I experienced an internal condensation issue with the pounder (although I admit I was pushing the pounder past its design). The price tag is hefty with this bag so you should really be needing the warmth/weight ratio to justify the price. I have used this bag for no less then 9 months of hard use on shelter floors and it is still holding up well. For me, it was well worth the price tag (I think I paid around $225 in 06) It will be my bag of choice after Damascus in my upcomming 2010 AT hike.

I'm really intrigued by the continuous baffle construction.

I'm really intrigued by the continuous baffle construction. Any testimonies to how well people like this? Does the down shift much in the middle of the night? I'm used to opening my bag up to use as a down comforter on warmer nights, and am debating if I want to go with a continuous baffle or divided bag from WM.

I agree with Kurt. With a 4" loft bag like this, you don't have to worry much about down shifting (unless you sleep vertically like Batman). Go with the continuous baffle, the sewn through option creates cold spots where the bag is sewn, and is really only necessary when a bag has VERY little down in it (like the WM highlite). This bag has the perfect amount of down for its temp rating and I've never had any problems with down being in the wrong spot.

Get the continuous baffle! Its far warmer for little more weight. Basically there is a bit of mesh between each section rather than being sown though.

Western Mountaineering is my hero.

I researched and tried out probably twenty 3-season sleeping bags before I found my precioussssss. I'm a warm sleeper, so this is a FULL 3-season bag for me at 30 degrees. Honestly Western is conservative in their temp ratings anyway. Everything about the MegaLite is top notch. The loft amazes me for being so light and compressible, the zipper NEVER snags, and I even like the burgundy color of it (my bag is not straight purple like the picture above, it's burgundy). It has a highly water-resistant shell and with a waterproof compression bag (I suggest Sea to Summit's eVENT) you will have a supremely light, tiny bundle of down goodness you never have to worry about getting wet. What else can I say? Sometimes I pull this baby out of my closet just to look at it cuz it's so beautiful! This is the perfect bag, and my absolute favorite piece of gear.
