Western Mountaineering Down Pillow is the bombdiggity

By:
August 31, 2009

This pillow packs really small and is super comfortable for any camping trip. It is pretty small like the other reviews say but it'll make a huge difference in your night's sleep without the expense of hauling extra baggage around.

Not worth the money

By:
October 6, 2008

Tried this one due to many positive reviews, but after using it on a 3 day trip last summer, I was very disappointed. It basically went flat as soon as you put your head on it and did nothing for support unless you bunch it into a very small size. I am returning it and looking for some type of light weight inflatable.

WM down pillow

By:
May 2, 2008

Seems a little soft for what I like in a pillow. Head sinks in pretty far. Other than that it is good. It's pricey, but a very comfortable pillow.

Very disappointing

By:
February 4, 2009

I purchased this after reading some great reviews. Shortly into our first night, I ended up having to use a stuff sack with some clothes as this thing was pretty much useless. I am side sleeper and realize you don't get home like comfort when backpacking, but I need more support and this pillow pretty much felt flat with almost no support. This one has been returned and being replaced with a Mont-Bell UL comfort system inflatable pillow.

Really Comfy Pillows!

By:
October 28, 2008

Bought a pair of these for me and the wife! We use them with our Big Agnes bags and they fit perfect in the pillow pocket. They compress extremely well but fluff up enough when you need them that it eliminates the "flat on the ground" effect. I don't leave home without it anymore!

How can you leave this item behind?

By:
July 29, 2008

If you own one, you will end up loving it and never forget to bring it.

Quadruples as a pillow, neck rest, lumbar rest, and foot warmer to fill up the end of the sleeping bag.

And it comes with it's own stuff sack which is attached. Really, What more could one possibly want out of a pillow? I also believe the weight is more like 3.5 oz.

not enough stuffing

By:
April 22, 2009

I ordered this pillow after reviewing a lot of others opinions on it. My husband an I were very disappointed. For backpacking, it is more comfortable stuffing a sack with cloths than using this pillow. For car camping it is way to small and under stuffed. It would be more useful if it had twice the amount of stuffing in it.

Small, soft and comfortable

By:
May 31, 2009

This is a nice, smallish pillow. It is very lightweight, and packs small. It comes with an attached stuff sack. However, if you are expecting a home-sized pillow you will probably be disappointed. It is relatively small, and your head does sink into it. If you are used to a small, thin pillow, it could be very nice (and much more comfortable than sleeping on a stuff sack of clothes). I have found that it fits nicely into my Big Agnes bag's pillow pocket, but then I put a folded fleece under it to add more bulk. It is pricey, so before you buy it you should ask yourself whether a smaller (but very soft and comfy) pillow will meet your needs.

Too small for me, I can't hold on to it when I sleep on my side. I recommend the Nemo Fillo at nemoequipment.com that is comfortable, and large.

Western Mountaineering Cloud Rest Down Pillow

By:
July 1, 2005

My wife and I are experienced backpackers - more than 40 years each. We've gone nearly ultralite with the exception of two pieces of gear: a Prolite 4 (to get the extra 1/2" thickness) and this WM Cloud Rest Down Pillow. We realize that some would not justify the extra 4.4 oz (measured on our digital scale) weight. But, we've tried all other pillow options and the Cloud Rest is the best option we've used so far. It may seem under-stuffed at first - but in practice it is just right for us. Like other WM products, it is expensive - but again, you get what you pay for. We think this pillow's size, simplicity of use, compatibility, loft, and weight, are ideal for those who want a compromise between weight and sleeping comfort.

For a GREAT nights sleep....

By:
March 18, 2004

Grab yourself one of these pillows.
Featherweight pillow which is fantastic. Will not leave the house again for the outdoors without it. Sure it is luxury, but after a hard day climbing, your body deserves it.
My head did not hit the ground once during the night. Stuffs down to almost no size, then inflates to generous pillow when taken out of attached stuff sack.
Do yourself a favour, and get yourself one!!!

Way too small

By:
October 20, 2005

I bought this pillow despite its high price because the other reviews said it was very comfortable and practically a necessity for any extended camping trips. Although the pillow was very soft, it was no bigger than a medium-sized bag of chips—hardly enough to sleep on. I returned it and bought the Therm-A-Rest Compressible Pillow (size Large), which I highly recommend.

Ah-h-h...a piece of heaven for the head.

By:
January 31, 2007

I use the Cloud's Rest both camping and at home. It is wonderfully light and fluffy and stays that way! Haven't seen any down leave the pillow and found none in my hair. At first I didn't know what to do with the loose side pocket but I've found, while winter camping, that it was a perfect place to stash my winter liner gloves. Another plus (for some)...the pillow cover keeps you from waking up with matted bed hair! The pillow is warm in cold and cool in the heat. A real luxury...it's good to be good to yourself.

Best backpacking pillow...

By:
January 3, 2007

I tried a few pillows for backpacking, including the Thermarest with the foam pieces, not too comfortable. I have been using the ultralight paper/plastic pillows from BPL, but these Western Mountaineering downs are sooo much more comfortable, and pack down pretty small. Of course they weight almost nothing. The integrated stuff sack is clever and works well also.

I love it

By:
April 24, 2008

This pillow is overstuffed for its size, quite full of down. If it was any bigger it wouldn't fit very well into the hooded top of my sleeping bad bag. after 3 nights in the field and 2 in my bed I am very satisfied with this purchase. After a hard day on my feet I don't skimp on my sleeping gear, It pays dividends the next day.

Went hiking in Patagonia and brought two of these pillows (one for me, one for my husband). We both loved them, great for sleeping in your sleeping bag, and fabulous on planes!

Sleep!

By:
May 19, 2009

This little wonder made all the difference for my wife's first backpacking trip. It is very comfortable and easy to store. I prefer the air-pillow because I need more support between neck and head, but if you like a down pillow, this one is great!

IMO. Best Pillow Ever!

Do yourself a favor, and buy one. Nemoequipment does have a pillow; however it runs 11 ounces! This thing is awesome. It does sink when you lay on it, however, as Scott Wiley says..."It may seem under-stuffed at first - but in practice it is just right" Like other WM products, it is expensive - but again, you get what you pay for. But one!

Western Mountaineering Cloudrest Down Pillow Review

By: Backcountry.com Employee
May 11, 2009

The Western Mountaineering Cloudrest Down Pillow is definitely comfortable, and the lightest backpacking pillow that I could find in the market. As I have tested both this pillow and the Therm-a-Rest pillow, I will say I like the Therm-a-rest pillow more. This pillow is great because it is very light at 4oz, very packable, and extremely comfortable and soft.

This pillow is small, which makes it difficult to keep your head on the pillow all night without readjusting. Also, your head sinks down into the pillow pretty far. It is also very expensive. I am not sure if the price justifies what you get, but that's just me.
