The Westcomb Men's Specter LT Jacket combines waterproof breathable eVent fabric with a minimalist design to give you just-in-case weather protection. The Specter LT Jacket takes up hardly any space in your pack, so you won't have to debate about whether to bring along a shell. If the rain or snow starts to fall, this Westcomb shell provides plenty of protection to keep you dry for the rest of your trip—even if your trip involves another week in the hills.
Does a 'technical shell' like this provide enough warmth when coupled with a fleece or appropriate mid-layer in mid-winter skiing, or just as a light shell in spring conditions?
If you're in mild winter conditions (20-35F) your technical shell over a mid layer should be plenty warm enough for a high-exertion day. In some cases, you might only need a base layer under your shell.
I used this jacket for hundreds of miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. Hiked 30 miles one day in rain & windy ~ 40 F temps and stayed dry and almost entirely sweat-free. Breathes really, really well. I use this as a "wind shirt" also since it's so light & breathable. My only gripe is that there are no hand pockets. Though that would push up the weight a bit, it would make the jacket more useable in-town for store runs, etc. The chest pockets are just barely big enough to fit an Apple iPhone or iPod Nano 2nd gen. Though it seems this type of eVent fabric isn't quite as durable as bomber Gore-Tex, it's worked well for me. Hard to find this jacket in stores, I found it at Feathered Friends in Seattle. Excellent, trim fit on me - about 6', 155 lbs on a size Medium. Almost a little too tight at the neck, but it's OK. I kind of wish they offered a brighter color though for safety / visibility in the mountains. I have the black version.
First of all I was tired of having all my outdoor gear made in China, so was looking for Canadian or American made(stimulate economy) and came across Westcomb.A Canadian company, I believe started by some ex Arc'teryx people (if anyone knows for sure let me know). SinceArc'teryx makes a lot of their stuff in China and still charges the same I went for Westcomb. Now I want to get rid of all my Gore-tex and replace it with e-vent. This jacket is now my favourite. Took it up Mt Assiniboine and encoutered all manner of weather form rain, wind and sleet to snow and I stayed dry and and more dry. Like the previous reviewer, this jacket has no tacky inside jacket feeling after rain and exertion, is extremely durable, ultra light and packs small.
I love this Specter! I have used it for backpacking mostly, but have used it as a light snowboarding shell in wet spring conditions too... So far the best breathing of any waterproof shell I have ever owned or used, zero swampy goretex feel! eVent rocks! I am now a huge believer... Oh and Westcomb is one of the most helpful companies I have ever dealt with, great products and service.
