Westcomb designed the Men's Mirage Jacket for high-octane athletes who are out pushing themselves in all types of weather, especially wet winter storms. This technical shell uses eVent waterproof fabric to give you exceptional protection from the elements. eVent is a unique among waterproof fabrics because it allows moisture to vent directly to the outside without first making you damp and clammy on the inside. This Westcomb jacket's articulated elbows let you adjust your skins with ease. With a trim, athletic fit, the Mirage looks great on and off the mountain.
Bottom Line: When you demand top performance from your gear, the Westcomb Mirage Jacket delivers.
I prefer the slightly simpler and lighter Westcomb Phantom Jacket for extended backcountry trips and serious alpine endeavors, but this is my choice for day-slogs, riding lifts, or yo-yo skinning in the nasty. The Mirage really excels when covering big vert changes or on soupy days when temperatures can fluctuate back and forth between butt-cold and mild. It actually "BREATHES", contrary to the way this word has been marketed in the past with other fabrics. eVent has unlocked the secret of how to make shtuff that blocks the elements without having to wear the suffocating PU-membrane-garbage-bag-Tex of yesterday (finally), and in the Mirage, Westcomb worked it into a smart design. Nice.
Just picked this up and after trying it on and comparing it to Arcteryx jackets I was sold. Number one, I ride so I didn't want to look like a skier with a skin tight Arcteryx jacket. The construction is flawless with only the bare minimum of what you need so it is incredibly light which will be great for splitting. The cut is just sick too....I love how the back end is cut low which is great for snowboarders. The eVent is simply incredible too...I have Special Blend gore-tex pants and they are great but there really is no comparison. eVent is here to stay and I will not be spending any more money on gore-tex.
I love Westcomb, made in Canada, and eVent beats Gore-Tex hands down. You get a versatile big mountain coat with storm skirt (much better than Arcteryx storm skirt design) plus pit zips with eVent breathability. Fit is athletic but I would not call it Euro, I wear a Large and I am about 5-10 and wear 44R suit size. Nits would be that the storm skirt is not removable and like all Mirage Jackets, the curved front zipper is not for everyone but these are minor compared to the quality and performance that you get from this jacket. Get it if they have your size. If you want a "lite" version, get the Special Edition which drops the storm skirt, pit zips and arm pocket but to me, this is the value leader. One thing you should be prepared for is that once you go eVent, you will never go back to Gore-Tex.
this is the best jacket i have ever worn. It fits perfect almost like i had it tailored. the construction is unbelievable every inch of this jacket is impeccable. i'll grow tired of the jacket way before i will need to replace it.
Event is the best fabric i have come across, the jacket i got has pit-zips but i doubt i will have to use them very often.
the jacket is beautiful and eVent is the future, buy this jacket
A pic of my dad and brothers. The Red, on the right is the Westcomb Mirage, middle bottom, is the Backcountry.com Shift, Left is the Sierra Designs Hurricane, and the top in green is Marmot Precip. Even up at Denali park we all stayed pretty dry when we were not swimming in the river.
What differences are there between the 2007 model and the 2008? From what i can tell, the hood was two-way adjustable and is now three-way; the neck wasn't fleece-lined and now is. Anything else?
The 08's seem to run a little larger in size.> i think they fixed the collar too, made it a bit higher, i have last years and can't see what the problem is.
Hands down, the best jacket on the market. I got a small (5'8", 165, wear a 38 in a suit jacket). Fits like a glove with none of the usual excess bulk associated with ski and snowboard jackets, it weighs almost nothing, and folds down to miniscule proportions in a backpack outer pocket for travel. Absolutely windproof and waterproof this bad boy is a solid performer in everything I have thrown at it so far. Pit zips are completely unnecessary as this jacket breathes like it has lungs. I layered this jacket with Patagonia Capilene 3 and a TNF TKA 100 1/4 zip shirt, and that was all that I needed to stay warm in sub zero conditions both on mountain and on urban hikes around Jackson last week. Got mad compliments from everybody that wasn't jealous, and I spread the word about eVent and Westcomb to anyone that was interested. The style is way cool enough to wear anywhere- athletic fit looks great as street clothes or shred clothes which expands the versatility of this as a multi season shell. See my pic in this comments list... My only issue is that the hood is too small to fit over a helmet- but I don't wear hoods over my helmet anyway so it's a non-issue. Smaller hood also means tighter fit over a beanie when I'm not wearing a helmet- further making it a non- issue. If you have the coin to drop, drop it on this jacket-you won't be disappointed.
What is the fit like? I've pretty much decided that this is my jacket, but no one ever talks about the fit for a small or medium... and I find myself caught somewhere in between. I've read alot about the larger sizes, and it seems like they run pretty true to size. I don't want to be swimming in the jacket when I'm not layered heavy, but on the opposite I don't want to be restricted when the temp drops and i need an added base or two. I am 5'8, 160ish#...starting to grow a little belly from sitting at a desk all day... wear a 38S in a suit jacket, and a Medium (that is too bulky for wear without layers) in the old North Face RTG this will be replacing. If anybody has any experience close to my build I'd love to hear what you think. Thanks.
I weigh in at 170 and am 5'10" and the medium fits me perfect. I think you would be best served with a small. From my experience wearing hardshells from Arc Teryx, Marmot, North Face, Mtn Hardware, and Cloudveil, Westcomb is the best I've worn that addresses the layering issue. In my mind, a top-quality hardshell should fit well whether you're layering or not. What I mean by this is that it shouldn't feel restrictive with a fleece jacket or insulative piece underneath, but also shouldn't feel too big when only wearing the shell. This is extremely difficult to do as a technical outerwear designer/engineer, but Westcomb has nailed it. I own both the Westcomb iMirage and the Westcomb Mojave Softshell (Powershield), and both fit differently. The softshell is much more athletically cut (ie. form fitting) whereas the iMirage Shell is definitely looser for layering (but not too loose). I think Westcomb goes to extreme lengths to get the fit right. I've never had better fitting jackets than the Westcomb ones I own.
First day i got it, had it out in the stands at a Stampeders game in the cold, driving rain and it kept me warm and dry. Breathes really well and has been great in variable conditions when the temperature is swinging 20 degrees in the span of a few minutes. Great jacket, best I've ever had.
Westcomb does have a lifetime warranty (http://www.westcomb.com/service/warranty.asp). Plus, their customer service is awesome!Hard to tell. It could be a many number of reasons. If at any time -- now, next month, in 30 years -- you're not 100% satisfied, send your gear back for a full refund. Great jacket with all the features a versatile shell needs. The word is out and I am also a believer in eVent, it is much more breathable than Gore-tex. The fit is spot on and I like that the jacket doesn't come down too low. Only thing missing is the hood is not stow-able. The zipper is offset at the collar, an excellent addition showing the attention to detail.
You can check it out here (it's french, but pictures worth thousands words) :http://www.mac4ever.com/articles/hardware/672/irebel_et_imirage_westcomb_lance_ses_vestes_ipod/The adapter is probably included. By the way, incredible jacket.I own the iMirage (i know your jealous:) and it absolutely comes with the right adapter. It works with my Nano, iPod classic, and iPhone (only the iPod on my iPhone works with the controls). For those wondering if the iPhone fits in the internal pocket, it does! The best thing when using my iPhone is that i don't have to worry about it getting wet or damaged while hiking, skiing, etc. The headphones and mic on the iPhone makes it easy to take calls and the controls on the sleeve allow me to work my music. Absolutely the coolest thing ever!
This jacket is sick! I use it snowboarding, hiking in torrential downpours, around town when it is snowing, light rain, hot/cold, it doesn't matter this jacket is perfect. If you haven't checked out Event, go to their website and read up. The fabric is amazing and ten times better than Gore (proshell is most comparable). Seriously, i live in CO and if it is hot, it works, cold, works even better, wet/dry, snow or rain, this thing performs!
Just got this jacket and so far seems to deliver as everyone else has pointed out. Only real complaint i have is the height of the collar - i'd prefer it be a little higher to be able to hide behind on those really cold days.
Seems great so far. The XL fit me well...I'm 6'4" 235lbs, so not tiny. Breathes well, and the pitzips and powder skirt are both key. Pretty much all the bells and whistles you need for a hard-core skiing shell.
I bought this jacket (version without pit-zips) on sale for a little over $200... Best decision in buying a jacket I ever made. I just took it through the rough terrain of the Himilayas..no problem Then it was to the pouring rain and howling wind of the Patagonia, but I don't even think the inside of my jacket even knows what wind or rain is! It's been through hot and cold, but either way it performed professionally. You seriously don't need the pit-zips, which I was concerned about before getting the jacket...eVent is that good. The design, weight, looks, and performance are awesome, and even when I didn't think it could get any better, I noticed the washing instructions on the tag in my tent one evening, and it says to wash it frequently... Normally with previous coats I've had, I try not to wash it too often in fear of loosing the fabrics qualities to quickly. However, this jacket seems to be asking for the rain! If you find it on sale like I did, you'll have a perma-smile anytime you have to pull it out for the elements.
I have last years Mirage, and this years IMirage. They are two different styles, but the same jacket minus the ipod. I'm 5'10, 175lbs., and RIPPED! ;) Because my arms are too big, the Medium ('08) will only work for ranonee w/medium layers underneath. My last year's Mirage (size large) has the athletic fit, but fits for very cold days. So, that's the sizing. The jacket is amazing in water protection and ability to allow water out. I had owned Gortex, and will never go back. If you work and sweat while playing, this is the jacket. AGAIN, Event is way better than Gortex. It's the new kid on the block, and I believe it to be much better. I have own ARCTERYX, NorthFace, and Patagonia. My two WESTCOMB jackets cannot be replaced. I wish I had something bad too add, and would if I did. Cannot go wrong with WESTCOMB.
