Volkl Katana Alpine Ski

The Volkl Katana Alpine Ski gives expert skiers the power, flotation, and performance to slay the steepest powder lines on the planet. The Powder Channel Tail offers many of the advantages of a swallowtail ski (flotation and a powerful, centered stance) while still allowing you to land switch and power through variable conditions. Combine this with no camber, a slight rocker, and a huge platform, and you have a ski that will redefine how you ski the pow. Volkl gave this big-mountain powder specialist two sheets of titanium laminated to a full length wood core so the Katana satiates the most hard-charging rider out there.

Bottom Line: Want to rip the steep, deep big mountain lines? Make the Katana your weapon of choice.

Big Mtn versatility

This ski blows my mind! For the off piste shredder looking to buy one ski this season that does it all, this really is the fat-rockered ski you want! I've been impressed with the way the Katana holds and carves fluidly on ice and windpack, and completely rally's in Powder. This ski is on the stiff side, so although you can finesse it, there are times where it demands aggressiveness. The slightly rockered shape of this new Katana has been a sweet improvement over past Volkl Katana's... which I thought, was as good as it gets!

Is it really different from last year's model? How much of a rocker does it really have?

Katana Rips!

By: Backcountry.com Sponsored Athlete
October 28, 2009

The Volkl Katana is my go to ski for 09-10' season. Stiff enough to handle the crud and fat enough to slay the deep, this ski simply rips. This was my weapon of choice for the 2009 World Heli Challenge. I took home victory in BigMt and DH on these boards, with a nice 8th place in freeride. Its got a twin tip for deep switch landings, and awesome shape for arching big turns.

Go BIG, this is a big ski and you need the length. get the 183, no question. with the rocker you will have a shorter effective edge. so the shorter one would be squirmy. go BIG and have FUN.

Maybe if your defenition of " best all around backcountry set up" is the heaviest combination possible. I recomend taping some bricks to your combo to make it even better.

Great Boards!

I'm a 50 year old life-long skier and with these skis I'm skiing the best I've skied in my life. In good powder they are incredible and they make the crud almost feel like good stuff. You can curve turns or just skid them easily if it's tight in the tree's. I got 190s but they turn as quick as a much shorter ski. Also, they ski great on the hard pack.

What more can one say?

Except that in addition to all the people who have already written how much they love this ski and how versatile it is, it is also a ridiculously great tele ski! Great in the pow, great in the crud and wind slab and junk and even great in powder and soft bumps. I am 48 and these skis have helped me to take it to a new level.

enjoy a powder day even more

By:

I think this ski is the ultimate big mountain tool. This is the best resort pow ski around. It will charge through anything you point it towards and you will float in the deepest of snow. When you show up to your local resort after a big dump, the Katana will have you slashing the goods until its skied out and then you will still be on the ski you need for ridding the chopped up crud.

rips

The Katana is a great powder ski. Tons of float. I ride the 190 and can drive the front of the ski even in deep conditions.
It has enough sidecut to make it a fun ski on the groomers as well. Just dont expect it to be stable when going straight. Due to the flat camber it floats around a little so you need to keep the ski on edge.

top ski for me

By:
October 22, 2009

Great ski. It truly rips on any snow conditions. I bought the Katanas thinking I would use them only in powder but was completely blown back by how good they performed on hard pack and ice. They have since been bumped up to my every day ski.
