My girlfriend recently rented a pair of last years Auras. I couldnt believe how much her skiing improved, she instantly (ok I hate to use say it) fell in love with the skis. She has rented them about ½ dozen times this year and now and with the $$ weve been putting into rentals Im thinking about pulling the trigger on a new pair. She is 57 about 130 -135lbs intermediate skier and likes the 156. Im thinking she may out grow them as she improves. Unfortunately the ski area where we rent does not have any 163s to rent.
Length Suggestions Im leaning toward the 156 because that is what she is comfortable on??
So, I rode the 163s today...and I still absolutely love them. They felt a little shaky on the first run or so, but after that, I felt completely comfortable on them.
I wasn't able to try them out in powder or trees, but they were still as good for bombing down groomers as the 156s (actually, I felt like I could go much faster, which makes sense since they're longer)...and they still turned quick enough on bumps. I did find, however, that I have to go on edge a bit more with the 163s than with the 156s.
I weigh a little more than your girlfriend, and I don't really know how our levels compare, but I'm definitely happy with my decision to go with the 163s over the 156s.
I demoed a pair of this year's Auras in the 156 size...I'm 5'6" and would consider myself a Type 3 skier (I can get down anything I end up on, although it may not always look all that pretty).
I had wanted to try the 163s but they didn't have them at the shop I was demoing from (seems to be a common problem). I also fell "in love" with the 156s...I felt very stable and comfortable on them and they turned really quickly. However, they only came up to like my chin...and my old skis are 160s leading me to believe that the 156s are too short for me. So, I went ahead and bought the 163s from a shop near me without having tried them out first.
I had the same debate going on that you have right now. I would suggest going for the 163s so that she'll be able to grow into them (they're not the cheapest ski to get just to use for a year or two). I haven't tried out my 163s yet, but I plan on going in the next few days and will let you know my thoughts then.
I cannot write enough good things about these skis. They turn easier then I expected, great in powder, they even carve up icy groomers better then any other ski I have tried. Really the only con is the top sheet is metal and I've been getting a ton of metal splinters... ouch. But I could care less because these skis are worth it.
What is a comparable ski to the Aura? I haven't skied this years yet and absolutely love last years, but they are so hard to find, and rightly so because they are AMAZING! I don't fall over on them!:)
So this ski is amazing... It is my 1st powder ski so I was a little worried about being able to carve turns when I skiing all mountain but it's totally solid. Something to note: on the 156s only there is a clear "sticker" that goes between the binding and the ski because the skis are so thin and the shop would drill through. It is only on that size. Backcountry didn't include this when I bought the skis (almost screwed over my 1st weekend on them) so make sure when you get them it's in the shipment. LOVE this ski - would recommend to anyone.
I'm 5'1, 130lbs, experienced ski racer who is debating which size is right for me....the 156 or 163? Currently I ride on a pair of atomic women SL 11's that are 160....any suggestions? Also...I really like the top sheet design from last year. Is there anywhere or anyway to purchase last year's model? Or even the pink/black version from this year??
I'm 5'1" just under 100 lbs expert skier and I have the 156. I bought these after skiing on 8 yr old volkls (!) with a parabolic sidecut - 149 length. Compared to my old skis, these ski short but I know that's the difference in sidecut. I think you'd probably be fine with the 163s.
I use the word love every time I get talking about these skis. The only other things I would use that word in reference to are my boyfriend, my dog and wine. They are a great do it all ski for girls who get after it - mock down groomers, take buttery POW turns, mess around in the trees...This ski is a charger, not a noodle. Mine are two years old and I probably should sell them but I'm too attached :)
I weigh 115 and am 5'5" tall. I'm the type of skier that can get down a double black run or go through the trees, but it may not be the most graceful sight you ever saw. Am I too light for these skis? I am afraid they may be too stiff.
if you are being honest about your ability as an advanced to expert level skier (double blacks mean nothing...is that in Wyoming or Ohio....run ratings are relative to the hill, not an actual standard) than you will have no problem with these. However, if youre not confident enough in your ability that you question the stiffness, then there are better skies out there for you.
I love these skis! They handle pretty much everything. 5'0 120# strong skier- got the 156 cm mounted with marker dukes. This ski floats in powder (admittedly, pretty much anything over 85 will for someone my size,) powers through crud, holds an edge well on groomers, but will kick your butt if you aren't forward. Only thing I would warn about is that the ski is thin, so if your shop isn't careful, they WILL dimple the bottoms (or drill through the base) if they're not paying attention to screw length. So, I'm on my second pair after my shop replaced my first set at the end of the season. Not really a down side as new skis 2 yrs in a row, but not all shops will be as responsible when they screw up.
Write your comment here...Funny you should mention this.......I have a pair of Volkl Bridges 169 that I put Black Diamond 02 Tele bindings on.....same thing happened to me. I freaked! My ski tech calmed me down and repaired it, and said it's really not as bad as you think......he is an ex racer dude, and apparently this is a common occurance and is more cosmetic than physical......This year I am getting the Aura 170 and putting Hammerhead tele bindings on.....
Currently skiing on Salomon X Wing Tornado 146, 124-72-104, R 10.1 Snappy little buggers! Not great on ice. Love the length. What do you recommend in the new Volkl line. PSIA Alpine Level II Thx-Dawn
another confidence booster for ya, im 5'7, 140 lbs and my boyfriend is 5'5 150 lbs--we are both very good skiers, i have auras, he has mantras and he loves them. he has also skied my skies a few times and would choose his mantras over mine any day. i would also choose my auras over the mantras, its the same ski, just built for a girl. you will be fine with mantras.
There is no real reason you couldn't ski these other than the obvious.. "Dude, aren't those chick skis???". The Mantras would not be too beefy for you though man, if you are a strong skier, you will be able to adapt to how it handles. The Mantra is a good ski, and will ski pretty much the same as these, so the 170 in these or those, or depending how strong a skier you are, the next size up in the Mantra.
