Voile Pack Shovel w/ Snow Saw - 2006

As its name suggests, the Voile Pack Shovel with Snow Saw was designed to fit well into your touring pack. The T handle is more compact for storage in your pack and the shovel's construction is a tad lighter than other models. The Pack Shovel stores a snow saw right in the shaft for avalanche pit work, cornice cutting, and snow shelter building. The saw can be removed from the handle and attached to most 2 and 3 part aluminum poles for longer reach (no dice on Life-Link poles, but works smashingly with Black Diamond poles).

Bottom Line: If you want a shovel and a snow saw there is nothing better for storage and simplicity than the Voile Pack Shovel with Snow Saw.

Big & Heavy, But Great Shovel & Great Value

This is a big shovel, and the shaft does not get any smaller when stowing it away, but it moves lots of snow quickly. The inclusion of a snow saw is a great value, and stows away easily in the shaft. The snow saw can be used with the shovel grip (making the shovel usable, but less than ideal), or with the upper shaft of many adjustable ski poles (but don't leverage it too much in this configuration or you could break the ski pole). I also found an old downhill ski pole that was the right diameter, hacked it off partway, and created a dedicated handle for the snow saw.
Overall, not my first choice for a typical backcountry tour, but worked great for all the pit work in my Level 2 and Level 3 avy courses.

wish it fit Black Diamond

The snow saw doesn't fit Black Diamond fliclock poles but I still keep her around. The shovel handle is the saws case, BRILLIANT.

This is a great item. The saw has the added benifit to be detached and placed on a hiking pole for reach or standing cuts. Works great!
