The Vasque Velocity is a state-of-the-art trail runner, and it has proof: Outside Magazine recognized it as the 2003 Trail Runner of the Year. Built for motion control on rugged terrain, the Velocity provides rock-solid stability in any condition. An aggressively-lugged Vasque Mako outsole offers superb traction, while the dual-density EVA midsole, which is stiffer in the medial and postal regions of the foot, reduces pronation and collapsing. Vasque includes a nylon plate that extends from the forefoot to the arch, providing a comfortable flex with incredible torsional rigidity. TPU-reinforced Airmesh offers support and prevents the synthetic leather upper from stretching out over time. Further support is provided by lacing that extends near to the toe for a high-performance, precision fit. A burly toe rand protects those tender toes from rocks, roots, and other obstacles in the trail.
Bottom Line: While the Velocity isn't the lightest of the light, it does absolutely everything well, providing superb trail stability in a durable shoe you won't have to replace every couple months.
My favorite trail shoe. Wide toe box, good cushioning, durable enough to fend off the rocks, sticks and roots of techinical trails. great traction on almost everything, good not great on wet rocks. I wore a pair straight out of the box with a pair of Injinjis and gaiters for the whole race recently at the Bear 100. Zero blisters and only 1 lost toenail.
i am currently on my second and third pair of velocity shoes, rotating them for long trail runs. i have 280 and 340 miles on each pair. they a perfect for me for trail running, especially long runs. i hope backcountry gets some more in my size!
Great shoe, my second pair, the first were Gore-Tex lined and I now prefer the non-lined ones. Great stiff sole. I would recommend these to everyone out there. budget the Gore-Tex ones if you plan on getting wet, if you want high breath-ability get these ones.
I recently purchased a pair of Vasque Velocity's. This was my 3rd. brand that I had purchased and they are the best that I have run in. I run the granite domes at Enchanted Rock SNR in TX not the main trails but the boulder fields and obscurre trails around the park. I get great support and stability on very uneven terrain. I would recommend this shoe to every one.
I have already used these great trail running shoes and they feel great and work just as advertised. If you plan on hitting the dusty trails this summer, buy a pair. Cheers
Make no mistake, hiking with the lightest shoes possible is the only way to go. Heavy hiking boots are WAY overkill. I used these babys two + weeks on the John Muir Trail last summer. No blisters, no wear on the shoes, and happy legs because the shoes are so light. Now I use them as approach shoes for climbing, hiking shoes, even for riding the bike in the gym. After one year, the sole is starting to disappear, but for 85 bucks, I sure feel like I got my money's worth. Get 'em for sure.
I have had these shoes for about six months. They are breathable, light, and comfortable. Much lighter and airy than the Teva Elden Trail I used to run in. I normally run paved trails with these trail shoes (as terrible as that sounds) because trail shoes seem to support my ankles and knees much better than any road shoes have. These shoes have been great. The only complaint I have is the heel strike on the outsole is very soft rubber, and is wearing away very fast. Most likely from road versus trail use, but it would be nice if it lasted longer. Overall the best running shoes I've used. Well worth the cost.
When I first started running on these shoes, mainly 4x4 trails in the hills near my house, I found these shoes to be flat and clunky compared to my trusty Nike Zoom Steens. Sure they did the job but the sole did not have enough rocker to allow me to really turn up the pace. Then I took them on a run in the Ruby Mountains and realized what these shoes were designed for. Trail running on technical steep terrain. They have great lateral support, enough cushioning to protect from sharp objects and plenty of traction. If you love to run on these type of trails I highly recommend them, just don't ask these shoes to turn out 7 min. miles.
Really love these shoes for padding and traction. Excellent for long steep trail runs or even Fastpacking. The footbed is contoured for a tight fit. Toe box is a bit small so watch the toenails. My biggest issue is the stitching on the outside (near little toe). It consistantly comes loose and then tearing occurs in the material. I run an average of 400-500 miles on a pair of trail shoes. I am having a hard time getting that mileage out of the uppers on these shoes. Meanwhile, the soles wear like boots. No problem there. Regardless, I'd still buy them for their support and traction.
This is a great pair of shoes, I took it out on a test run in The Berkeley Hills and it was great!! I like the comfort and the design is cool too. I have no regrets about buying these shoes and dealing with Backcountry either...try it you'll like it.
Although they took their time breaking in, once I had 50 or so miles in them, they were (and are) great. I buy 6-8 pairs of running shoes/year replacing road and trail shoes either after 4 months or 400 miles: after over a year of running, the Velocity Trail Runners are still in my regular rotation! I've run in almost everything and these are my default, go-to shoes when I'm heading to the rougher trails. As mentioned, I noticed a longer break-in period than with other shoes, but these things are made to protect your feet: uneven, sharp, pointy, jagged off-camber, rocky, muddy, rooty trails are not a problem with these. I wouldn't wear them for a 5k footrace, but they're not made for that: these are Sherman tanks, not nitrous burning funny cars. They don't get too hot, I never got a blister from them and they look really, really cool. ¡Oh! The tread pattern is unbeatable. Except for perhaps the inov-8 line of fell shoes, you won't find a better shoe for traction in the mud (and even that is a debatable point.
I bought these as a knockabout shoe and for fast ascents/descents on track, in good weather. They are extremely breathable and comfortable and are grippy and stable on loose gravel. Not as good as Stealth rubber on rock and I have reservations about the durability of the uppers, but overall a great shoe.
I am in love with a shoe (in a wholesome sort of way). I am a big guy (6'2" 190lbs.) and I have ruined more than a few pair a shoes in short order running on the broken limestone trails that I frequent. These shoes are outstanding. I purchased my first pair and wore the daylights out of them and they have held up great. I quickly ordered two additional pair which I am currently breaking in. If you don't need Gore-Tex, this is the shoe for you. Fit, uppers, and outsoles are all five-star. I cannot say enough good things about them.
I had read a lot about the Vasque trail running shoe as being a good backpackers shoe. Backcountry.com had a great deal on them so I decided to give them a try. I was so pleased with them that I immediately ordered another pair. They are very comfortable and have an aggressive tread that grips the trail. The toe bumper really protects your toes from injury and the shoes give good support and cushioning even with a 35+ pound pack. I normally take a size 12 but I didn't like the tangerine color so I decided to try a 13 in the grey/red color which was also on sale. I find that the extra room is perfect for the backpacking use that I wanted the shoes for. I always check Backcountry.com first when I need something. They have great service and shipping is fast and free!
I gave these a try because of the $53 sale price a while back, and waited to write a review until I had them for several months. Negative: my foot seems rather narrow for the size I wanted to ensure plenty of toe room in the toebox. This caused some blistering from heel slipping since I couldn't lace them up real tightly, but the blistering subsided after my feet got used to them. Positives: Tread is excellent. Reinforced toe and last keep rocks from causing damage. Extremely breathable. I just finished a 100km trail race in them with a stream crossing (December) in the first 3 miles--no sock changes, one small blister!
Not bad. But it is rather clunky like stated already. I do like this shoe on aggressive terrain but overall there are much lighter and better suited trail running shoes on the market. TJ
These shoes are great! Light, breathable, and awesome grip on the trail. The shoe size may run a tad on the small side. I bought a 10.5, my normal size, and these are just a little smaller than I'm used to. If you normally run a little big, I recommend ordering a half-size up. For the price, these can't be beat. The only thing they don't have is a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane, which would be nice.
Sooooo either its my feet and my choice of wearing a trail running shoe as apposed to a hiker (despite custom insoles and only carrying a CamelBak Mule) or these shoes just weren't meant to hike 45 miles of trail in a day! They felt great for about the first 15, but after that it was another story. Otherwise shoe has been great for all sorts of wearing situations, especially with a heat moldable insole. Have under 300 miles of variable running, hiking, and walking, on them and the back edge of the sole is starting to come loose.
I'm currently in my fourth pair of Velocity's and swear by them. I have done numerous 100 Ultras and yet to get a blister. These are by far the best trail shoe I have ever owned. They wrap the foot so nice and cushy and seem to last forever!
I usually have a complaint about at least one aspect of a trail shoe... too narrow, not enough sole cushioning / protection from rocks, toe bumper inadequate, hurts my achilles, etc. etc. I have owned the Gore-Tex version of the Velocity, the GTX, for about 2 years and really liked the way it felt, so I ordered the straight Velocity. Right out of the box it felt amazing. I now have about 50 miles on it and so far it is amazing feeling... much lighter than the GTX waterproof version, very well ventilated, and the rock & root protection on technical trails. I'm thinking of ordering other pairs in case they should ever discontinue this shoe! The perfect trail shoe? It just might be!
When you first put them on they feel flat but at the end of 15 mile hike your feet feel great. They have great traction, they breath well and are cool on your feet. Great shoe.
I got only 370 miles out of my Vasques before the material on the inside shredded. Actually, the material on the inside and outside near the front of my foot was showing major wear and tear as early as 200 miles, but then the inside of one of my shoes shredded in the middle of a long trail run, really irking me to the say the least. Yes, the shoes provide great traction, but the material is so not durable if you're on single track and gravel trails. Also, the shoes are VERY heavy. They have far more minuses than pluses. This go-around with Vasque proved to me that it's hard to find a better trail running shoe than Montrails.
While the shoes are essentially really comfortable and supportive (not to mention good looking), the soles are essentially shredded after a few days of off-trail rock and scree slope scrambling.
I've had 2 pairs of the Velocity and I consistently love them. They fit my feet fabulously and they are extremely durable too- my first pair I wore straight for 1.5 years before I got my new pair. Immediately I ripped the mesh on the side on a sharp rock while scrambling in CO, then went on to wear them pretty much every day for 5 months in Africa (very harsh on footwear) and the tear never got bigger or became a problem. I have worn them extensively both hiking and running in CO, the Winds, Kenya, etc. and my love for them remains, sans 2 Issues- These are dedicated runners and not good for hiking/scrambling/approach due to how flexible the tread lugs (= not stable) are and how quickly this sort of activity tears them off. Also, the plastic...um, thingy on the sole under the arch can make them treacherous on rocks, as it can slip very easily. But if you want trail runners for trail running, these are great shoes.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how well they fit right out of the box. I took them to the treadmill to break in and expected some rubbing or break-in issues - I had none. They fit very true to size and are very grippy. I have used them for a couple light afternoon hikes and a couple times on my mountain bike. They grab the mountain bike pedals very well - even when wet/muddy. No issues on the hikes. Overall, a good shoe at the regular price and a great shoe for the money if you can catch them on sale.
I can't say enough about the foothold on this shoe. My forefoot is locked in and my toes are not hitting the end of the shoe. No wonder it won Outside Magazine's Trail Runner of the year. They seem pretty durable as well.
These are probably the toughest shoes I have. I have trail run in almost every brand of shoe and these feel like they will last awhile (not the lightest but pretty middle weight). They are probably best for heavier runners but for really rough trails these are great, solid tanks. I use Super Feet in all my shoes but it made these too hard, at least for my feet. I tried a cheaper athletic insert and it was a perfect feel.
I have owned these shoes for about year and half and I can't say I do much trail running on them. I wear them for my everyday/work shoe and they are great. I put countless miles on them and they still feel just as comfortable as when I bought them. Aside from just wearing them for work i occasionaly take them out for a light hike and they perform quite well.
