Vasque Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot - Women's

When you're in the middle of a week-long backpacking trip in the North Cascades and it starts to pour, you'll be glad you're wearing the Vasque Women's Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boots. Veteran hikers know this boot for its simple style and comfortable fit, but it's the Gore-Tex insert that really make these boots shine. A knit nylon liner shuttles moisture from your feet to the Gore-Tex membrane, which lets the moisture pass through while keeping water from rain or puddles out. A high cut and burly waterproof leather upper provides plenty of ankle support while you're shouldering a heavy pack. Vasque also gave the Sundowner GTX a dual density EVA midsole to cushion your feet over miles of wilderness terrain.

Bottom Line: Lace up the Vasque Sundowner GTX Boot and hit the wet, muddy trail.

Last Forever

These boots are a dying breed: beautifully made, all-leather boots that will last for decades and only need a little mink oil now and then. I've had mine since 1998 and have hiked all over the White Mountains, the Rockies, the Scottish highlands, and the Himalayan foothills in them. They still look practically new when I polish them up. HOWEVER, they do run narrow. As I've gotten older, they've gotten tight around my little toe. I thought maybe i needed to move up a size, so I went to EMS today and tried on a new pair. Same problem. I'll be taking mine to be stretched to solve the problem, but If you have even moderately wide feet, try them on before you buy them.

the standard

I've had my Sundowners since 1989 - and they are still holding up great. Super ankle support in talus areas, and annual mink oil treatments keep them waterproof. I work as a naturalist in the southern appalachians - have not seen terrain they can't handle here - or on our annual trips to the Rockies. They're a bit heavy and not my first choice for level trails - but great when you carry a load on slopes. My husband is a diabetic - so he really has to make sure he has good shoes - got him a pair for his last birthday and he loves them too. Just a great boot!

I live in florida. I want a good boot that won't be too hot.

I live in florida. I want a good boot that won't be too hot. However, I'm heading to Alaska in May. I need something for cool, wet weather. Will this boot crossover?

depending on what kind of hiking you are planning for AK (and if you are in the interior or the coast) lightweight boots should still be fine- and those would be much more useful being in FL. I work in the interior of AK and use part leather part "breathable" fabric boots and I have been fine. If water proofing is required you might aim for something with few seems but not necessarily all leather.

Not sure you need the same product for FL as for AK! This would be great for Alaska - might want something lighter in FL.

These shoes are amazing!

I bought these boots 15 years ago and had to retire them only because they were beginning to look disreputable. I could still hike in them all day. My new pair is just as amazing and I intend to wear them for the next 15 years. They definately keep your feet dry and with wool socks very warm.

Just amazing

I still think they look a little odd but this is the most comfortable hiking boot I own. My foot is fairly wide but I have lots of toe room. My Sundowners are more that 20 yrs old and have been in some wild places and still look good if I polish them. Original soles and even original laces. Keep my feet dry too.
