Strap on the Volkl Women’s Aura Alpine Ski and feel a glow beyond the explanation of science. It’s hard to explain the absolute radiance, if you will, that comes from charging down an open powder basin, then spinning into switch mode once you hit the groomers below. Feel like hitting the park along the way? Not a worry—the Aura floats through the kickers with supernatural ease. With the fine grip of Volkl’s Power Construction, the responsiveness of a sophisticated sensorwood core, and the strength of two sheets of titanium, the Aura dances around the mountain as gracefully as the Northern Lights. The Aura’s 94mm waist offers plenty of float on freshie runs, while the twin tips and ample sidecut feel right at home on the hardpack.
Bottom Line: Find the elusive happy zone between a deep-powder freeski and a classic all-mountain ski, then bask in the afterglow.
I am considering purchasing the Volkl Aura Alpine ski but I'm not sure on the size I should get. I'm 5'9", 130 lbs, advanced skier and like mainly the powder and trees. But I also enjoy a fresh groomed run or soft big bumps. Any suggestions on size?
I weigh the same and just demoed these skis in 156 on both tele & alpine. I loved them skiing bumps. I think that length would be fun in trees as well. Powder I do wonder if longer might be better. Everyone I talk to says that length is good for the ~130 pounder. They are fat, so maybe that would add flotation to make up for the shorter length?
I just thought I would mention if you plan to mount these with a tele setup to beware that these skis are thinner than most tele specific skis(since they are not technically for tele). My husband had the Mantras and when they were mounted the person dimpled through the bottoms. The guys at black diamond mounted mine with the 01 binding without issues but advised me of the above info. Just make sure whoever mounts them tele style knows what they are doing! They ski everything great and are loads of fun.
I just got the volkl Kiku's (168) this year and love them. I am a 118 lb 5'7" athletic advanced intermediate. I've ridden them 15 days now and they have become my daily skis, mostly at Vail (back bowls). They have given me the confidence to go faster. They smooth out the rough snow and I can even make short turns easily when needed in powder (tried them in the trees, and soft bumps). I've skiied them in a couple of 3 ft days (opening of the back bowls, and a few great dumps in december) and they are heaven. I've also skiied them in 5 warmer days without snow and I feel I can still rip (as long as it's not icey). My only complaint is that hard pack moguls are more difficult (although I can get through them). I would like another pair of skis for the moguls on hardpack days. I tried using my old beloved rossignal B3's after skiing the Kiku's and I can't enjoy the rossi's anymore. I find I like a slightly stiffer ski, and the feel of volkls.
I keep hearing that the marker griffon is a great set-up for the auras...but the 90s you would have to bend out and the 110s too big, right?? Thoughts?
I just got these last season and love them. I am 5'7" 120 lbs and this is the only sport where I think a 'womens' ski does make a difference. I am aggressive but my skinny legs can only do so much to a ski. I have the 163cm length with BD 01 bindings(tele setup, the most amazing binding ever!). I ski almost exclusively in the backcountry in utah. I have taken these through all sorts of different snow and conditions, they are easy to turn and make me feel like I am floating on clouds. I can't compare these to too much b/c I haven't tried any other fat women's skis (only mens) but I have been very happy. Based on where I ski I think I would get a fatter ski the next time I buy some even if it had a little extra weight (like the kiku) but so far these are great all around skis.
I'm looking to buy a new ski this season but can't decide between the aura or the kiku...I am also a little hesitant since I have never skied a true womens ski before (i've always skied mens) Will these skis be too soft? I am an advanced very aggressive skier. Any suggestions will be of great help!
Both skis are great skis. it would depend what you are looking for in a ski. for an allround ski the Aura is a better match. if you like a big stick or like to schmeere you way down than the Kiku is your ski. the question about a womans or mens ski would come down to your build. my wife is a super aggressive skiier but she is 115lbs and 5'3" so she isn't pushing as much mass as i am. she has a pair of Karhu Berthas (and loves them). between these two skis i would go with the Kiku, i like fat skis for all conditions. whatever you decide you will have a blast! enjoy the POWDER!
The aura is the first all mountain ski I've owned and I must say was an excellent first choice. I'm 5'7", 130, intermediate/advanced, bought 170s and I must say this ski has changed the type of skier I am. It handles the groomers well, I have so much more control at high speeds and they carve nicely. It plows through the crud and floats in the pow. My roomie bought the same pair, 163s and she's 5'3", prob 110 and expert and she loves them too. They are so fun and effortless. Great ski.
I have the kikus and love them. Since riding them I can't go back to my rossignal b3's - they are wet noodles. My only complaint is they are tuffer in big hard pack moguls. Would the aura be better for all mountain?
If you're a woman who needs new ski's, buy these ones!!!!! These are the best boards i have ever been on. It was time for new sticks this year and i demoed about 4 different pairs and fell immediatly in love with these. They will go anywhere. On groomers they carve fast, the tip chatter is very minimal and only when you are going at break neck speeds. Short or long turns they do excactly what you want to. In powder those softer tips are great, and the float is amazing. They are extremely durable so far (about 15 days on them).
I'm 5'6" 140 lbs. 163cm Length, mounted with Rossignol SAS 120's (wish i would of used these for an AT settup) Get these, they are super stable and a ton of fun. best womens ski i have ever personally been on.
5' 145lb 90% off piste expert depending how high the bump - how chopped the pow - thinking 156cm. Used to damp skiis - but want more fun. Length OK? Twin tip needs more length?
