Thule Universal FlatTop 6 Rack

Load up the whole family’s collection of skis and head for the mountains with the Thule Universal FlatTop 6 Rack. With the help of the included universal factory mounting hardware, this rack adapts to almost any factory or after-market roof bars and includes a locking system to keep your sticks safe when you grab a bite after a long day of making turns. The oversized push-button release can be opened while wearing gloves, and the rack fits skis, snowboards, and even wakeboards.

Bottom Line: The universal choice for carrying your skis or snowboards.

Getting a fairing may help with that. It has to do with the airflow over the rack. Any way to adjust how air flows over it may help. I used to have a flat top 6 on my Subaru and having a fairing on the front helped with reducing wind noise.

Hold onto the Included wrench

Yeah, this rack is RAD and handles skies perfectly. Obviously if you ride anything bigger than 80 under foot this won't hold 6 pairs, but is certainly good for up to 4 sasatch powder boards. Also, I've never had any problem with the locks(included!!) or latches icing them selves closed. Really can't ask for much more from a rack. Ooooh and if you ever intend on removing it from you car make sure you don't throw out the included wrench; The bolts are specific to this and you can not remove without. Security thing I know, but still complicated things for me.

Exactly how wide is this rack. I have a couple of different pairs of skis and some have a very wide waist. I want to know how many skis i can actually fit on this rack.

Great Gear!

The FlatTop 6 is NICE! Maybe I am used to the crap coming from China but this thing will be carrying our snowboards for years. Its very easy to install and the locking mechanisms seem very secure. Something you want when parking in a dimly lit hotel parking lot.
*One note: This is our first snowboard carrier. We thought that taking our bindings off might help with fuel economy. After taking the bindings off, it was clear that the boards would have a chance to slide out of the back of the carrier. We tried flipping our boards over as well, but our bindings were too tall to fit in between the body of the car and the board. So... there. I hope that helps.

I assure you that bindings on or off will not effect the fuel economy.

i have this model installed on a 06 toyota rav-4 w/ factory rack, so i can't speak for the matrix exactly, but one issue i have is that the clearance of my factory rack is low, so most snowboards i place binding-side-down hit the roof, so i end up having to remove the bindings. very annoying. now if thule had some kind of lift to raise the clamps it would solve that problem, but no such luck. i recommend yakima big powderhound, that has an integrated lift (be sure it's the newest model, i think they just added it) in case you need it.

Does what it is intended to do

I have my FlatTop 6 mounted on a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it works great. So far I've hauled two snowboards side-by-side with bindings facing up and there hasn't been a problem. Installation probably lasted 15 minutes due to my factory rack and the locking system works fine. I'm a little apprehensive over how the rubber strips will hold up or how long the plastic will last, but it comes with a warranty so we shall see.

As expected, there is more wind drag while driving but it doesn't seem terribly bad.

What is the difference between this rack and the Thule Snowcat?

What is the difference between this rack and the Thule Snowcat? I have a Subaru Forester with factory bars on the roof.

The only thing I noticed was that the Snowcat requires a factory roof rack with side rails whereas it seems like you can get away with not having a factory rack for the Flat Top by using it with an aftermarket rack (Thule, Yakima, etc.).
