Unlike standard cargo boxes which wreak havoc on your gas millage or take up half your garage even when empty, the Thule Caravan Cargo Carrier collapses into its own storage bag when not in use. Plus, this weatherproof PVC bag fits on any factory or installed roof rack, so you don't have to drop more dough on fit kits. The Thule Caravan Cargo Carrier holds an incredibly 13cu feet of gear on your roof and out of the rain, so you have more room to stretch out during your road trip.
Bottom Line: There when you need it, stashes when you don't.
We drive from Memphis,TN to the Outer Banks in NC every summer for a family vacation. We'd been looking at the hard shell carriers for awhile for the trip, but didn't want to have the hassle of finding storage space for it when not in use. I came across this bag version and we decided to try it. So far, it is GREAT! I have a Nissan Murano and we had no problem attaching it to the car. We did a "test run" and were able to fit a 2' X 3' storage bin, three beach chairs, a stroller and few other small items. (It looks like it would also accommodate our 2 -year old if necessary :) LOL!)It's also extremely quiet at high speeds. It folds up nicely into the storage bag, too. My only concern is cleaning off the bug carnage we are sure to encounter on such a long trip, but I think it will be ok. This site also had THE BEST price -don't even bother buying elsewhere! Here's some additional info. I found about the carrier:
"The Thule 857 Caravan Roof Bag is the first all-weather roof top cargo bag constructed of environmentally friendly PVC-free durable 600 denier nylon. Enjoy the very generous 13 cu. ft. capacity that'll accommodate all types of cargo loads. In fact, the Thule 857 Caravan roof bag offers virtually the same capacity as hard-shell roof boxes but is more convenient to install, delivers weather-proof performance and is foldable for easy storage. Attaches directly to virtually all factory rack systems (even mounts to vehicles with side rails only & no crossbars), all styles of Thule base rack load bars, Yakima base roof rack round cross bars & other after-market roof rack manufacturers. The 857 Caravan cartop luggage bag is a superb medium-duty storage solution for your car rack when transporting cargo, luggage, camping gear etc. on any multi-day family vacation or day-trip. Durable, rugged and built for years of use in just about any foul weather conditions encountered during car travel."
I am looking at a car top carrier, the Thule Caravan appears to fit my needs. Is there a way to lock it to my Tahoe? I see that you have something called Sea to Summit lockable tie downs, would this be something I could use to lock the thing to the top of my Tahoe? Any other suggestions?
Is weight a concern for the roof? Do I need to get one of the baskets with this? I have a 2006 Honda Pilot, and it only has the side rails. If this thing just rests on the roof, how much can I really pack into it?
We have had an earlier much cheaper version, not the same brand, and during trips the side attachments vibrated so loud inside the van that we became frustrated and never used it again. Is this an issue with this canvas carrier for anyone? We can attach the carrier by front/back or sides. We are considering a hard shell instead unless we find the sides don't vibrate.
From Caravan guidelines downloaded from Thule website: "This bag is WEATHER RESISTANT, NOT WATERPROOF. Cargo must be packed in plastic bags if raining." I would recommend a good dry bag like the Sea to Summit eVent if putting clothes, etc in this roof bag.
we are concerned about the carrier rubbing on the top of the car. We have a sun roof and no cross bars so we are unsure about how to keep the carrier off the roof of the car. Tell me more.
