Therm-a-Rest Therm-a-Rest ToughSkin Sleeping Pad

Thorns and sharp rocks won't give you grief when you're sleeping on Therm-a-Rest's ToughSkin Sleeping Pad. The multilayer construction's closed-cell foam bottom layer is thick enough to prevent thorns from piercing the air-holding seal, so you won't wake up with a deflated sleeping pad when you're camping on desert terrain or Rocky Mountain snow. Light enough to bring on backpacking adventures, Therm-a-Rest's ToughSkin Pad gives you an easily transportable, comfortable place to rest.

Bottom Line: Sticks, stones, and thorns won't hurt your bones when you're sleeping on Therm-a-Rest's ToughSkin Sleeping Pad.

It's worth it!!

By:

I bought the short Therm-a-rest Toughskin. I have used it twice and have been completly satisfied. Not only is it comfortable to sleep on, but I can lean it up against a tree and use it as a seat cushon without worrying about puncture holes. With a few quick breaths, the pad is firm. I actually let out a little air to make it a little softer. I'm 6'2" and the short version is plenty long for my torso. When I turn on my side, my knees fit nicely on the pad. I was a little concerned about paying so much for a pad, but you get what you pay for. It's worth it.

I recently purchased a Big Agnes Mystic SL with demensions of 20x78. My problem is I would like to purchase a Therm-A-Rest Prolite 4, but I am unable to locate a pad of this size. Is there such a pad, if not, any suggestions?

Currently Cascade Designs (parent company of Thermarest branded sleeping pads) does not make a 20"X78" pad. All of their large pads are sized 25"X78". All Thermarest Regular size pads are 20"X 72". These two sizes are standard amongst all models. I'm not familiar with any other manufacturer who makes the size you've listed.

kick-ass, but easy on your ass

By:

I'm used to those cheap puss-pads we use in the Army, so when I got out I decided to splurge a bit and bought the regular size ToughSkin. This thing is so comfy that I sometimes actually use it in my own home instead of my mattress. The tough exterior is a big PLUS, since I am very unforgiving with my gear. I strap it to the side of my ruck and throw it around and it is still good as new. If I ever have to sleep on broken glass or a bed of nails I will be able to sleep cozy and confident with my ToughSkin. Great Job Therm-a-Rest!

how do you inflate this? Is it easy?

Blowing into an air mattress is actually not the greatest idea. It'll inflate the pad faster, but it's not advised. There is moisture in exhaled air. Eventually, this will soak the insulating portion of the mat--this can reduce the insulating material's effectiveness as an insulator. If you plan on operating in cold climates, the moisture can actually freeze. And above all, moisture adds unwanted weight. Over time, it will make a difference.

Yes it's easy, you blow in it. Like every other inflatable object you've encountered.-----------You lay it out open the valve and it self-inflates almost all the way, you then top it off by blowing in it and close the valve.-----------Remember when you first buy the pad you need to open the valve and leave it open for at least 24 hours. It's not going to inflate immediately. After doing this, it should inflate in about 10 minutes. It needs to be stored, if possible, unrolled and with the valve opened for the best inflation performance. They won't ever lose their ability to inflate, even when rolled up, it will just take a lot longer. It's ok to blow a few breaths in after it's inflated depending on how firm you want it.

Pricey, But Worth It!

By:
October 8, 2007

I had sworn off Thermarest due to a previous bad experience with holes and/or leaks with one of the first pads out by them. However, I needed to replace my cheap foam pad and chose to risk it again. I wanted the additional comfort of air cushion. After researching the options out there, I settled on the new ToughSkin (L) and have been really pleased. And after using it all summer in the granite mountains of New England, I couldn't be happier with its durability. Just wished it didn't cost a small fortune.

Whats the best stuff sack for this pad?

Whats the best stuff sack for this pad?

Depending on the size of pad, the best stuff sack is the Thermarest branded stuff sack made for the ToughSkin pad. The main reason is the size of the stuff sack, which is just right to easily get the pad in and out of the sack, but not so big that it's sloppy. Thermarest's stuff sacks are very well made and have lifetime warranties along with the pads. They where meant for each other:).

Most comfortable Therm-a-rest out there

By:
October 2, 2008

For my money the ToughSkin is the most comfortable pad available. I like my pad to have lots of "give." I.e., I like a pad that isn't inflated very much. With the ToughSkin, you can let a lot of air out and get a nice cushy pad. But, the ToughSkin is special because it has a layer of harder foam inside. This extra layer makes it so you really don't feel the ground no matter how little air you put in the Therm-a-rest, allowing you to dial in just the right amount of "give." I like this pad so much that many nights, I sleep on it on my wood floors with a sheet on top rather than on the bed. No kidding, its the most comfortable thing I've ever found to sleep on.

Will this work with the trekker lounge chair?

It all depends on the WIDTH of the pad. The Trekker Lounge comes in either 20" or 25". If the widths match up between the pad and the chair, then the Tough Skin Pad will work.

Best of all worlds

By:
September 18, 2008

This pad will give you the piece of mind when you have to plop down so sleep on some sticks or rocks. I also use this pad for winter adventures instead of bringing an open and closed cell pad. This has served me well in every situation. The few times I thought it was too bulky while packing, I ended up being very glad I had it. If your worried about a Thermarest popping and being stuck with no pad, get this pad.

Awesome Pad

By:
October 19, 2008

Got this pad for a backpacking trip this past weekend on the Buffalo River, in Northeast AR. It was great and well worht the extra weight compared to my friends who had smaller trail pros. Extremely comfortable, after a long day of backpacking around 16 miles it was great to pull this out and relax around the fire during dinner. I highly recommend this pad, you won't be disappointed.

No Complaints

By:
May 11, 2009

After sleeping for a few nights in my old and dated sleeping pad, I was freezing in 40 degree weather; I got a new one, another Therarest. Then I had a problem. I loved pad so much, I kept it in from of the TV. Guess my cat loved it too, layed on it, and punctured it with his claws (does that when he's really happy). Two down then I got the TOUGHSKIN. So far I've stayed warm and the cat can enjoy it at home too. The R rating seems to be pretty serious and is higher than the other pads but does add some extra weight. I did get the Short one to save a little bit of weight when backpacking. With the carrying bag, it packages into something very portable. I would recommend it.

ToughSkin Sleeping Pad

Good quality product. Light enough and small enough for my needs. I have another Alps product for the SO and mine appears to be better. First camping trip will be the test.
