The North Face Men's Windwall 1 Fleece Jacket expands the boundary of traditional wind-blocking jackets to offer greatly increased breathability, mobility, and comfort. Instead of using a clammy laminate to make the Windwall 1 Fleece Jacket windproof, The North Face integrated a mesh lining that lets in just a touch of air and keeps you from wallowing in your own sweat whenever you get a little warm. This midweight fleece makes an ideal outer layer in windy-but-not-too-wet weather, and it also gets the job done when you need a little extra insulation under your rain shell.
Bottom Line: The North Face Windwall 1 Fleece Jacket gives you the wind protection you want without sacrificing the breathability you need.
Temp test in light wind conditions: Being sedentary in the High 50's with a t-shirt underneath was doable. Sedentary in the 40's i used a t-shit, micro fleece and this jacket--also doable.
I think North face goes over-board with the logo branding. Do i really need one on the front AND back of the jacket? Why can't the logo stitching be the same color as the jacket--must it be bright white?
The cut and fit are so nice though--- i'll just carefully color that white stitching with a black permanent marker.
Hey Stomper- it will work, but it probably wouldn't be my first choice as a layering fleece because it has a windblocking membrane that will slightly limit breathibability. Here are a few other options that don't have membranes that will work well for layering: -The North Face Momentum Jacket (powerstretch type matial - my favorite in the group) -The North Face Bonded Rebel Full Zip Jacket (bonded fleece) -The North Face Borealis Full Zip (lighter 100 weight microfleece)
I think all 3 of these would make nice layering pieces for your shell- Hope this helps
First some specs to help you shop: For 5'10 150lbs frame, Medium is a bit loose fit, perfect for wearing baselayers underneath TKA 100 like fleece on outer face, grid lock pattern lining on inside (including arms); this jacket will not cling onto any fabric worn as inner layer, which is good.
So, This is the jacket I grab all the time. Here is why: It is light in weight, but warm. When worn with just T-shirt, you will never overheat in 50-60 degree+ mild days. When in 40-50 degree range, I wear this with a thermal shirt/light fleece and it keeps me warm. Not recommended for below 40, unless you wear heavier fleece under it, which can get a bit bulky (defeating the purpose of light weight jackets). Side note: if you want something for below 40, I suggest the Patagonia R4, which is Windproof and Ultra Warm.
The pocket openings are regular size, but you can fit a 2 liter bottle in it, as the lining is huge.
A bit stiff when new, but will soften up with more wear, and wash.
Okay, I tried a lot of jackets from makers such as The North Face, Mountain Hardware, Sportshill, and found the Windwall 1 the best of the lot in its class. I'll even take it over the North Face Apex Bionic that I tried.
I use the Windwall 1 on a daily basis for morning workouts, walking a brisk clip for 3 miles daily. The Windwall 1 keeps me warm down to 15 degrees with 2 thin layers underneath, a poly fabric wicking T-shirt with a poly fabric zip neck shirt over that, and the WIndwall 1 as the outer layer.
The Windwall 1 is light, thin and accepts base layers nicely. I wear a medium size at 155 lbs, 5'-7" height.
Hi, My husband is 6 feet tall, and weighs 165 lbs. Wondering if you'd recommend size M or size L for him. Also, does this jacket appear to be fleece or more of a windbreaker when you view it? Thanks...
My Husband got this jacket in rare-to-find now Zinc Grey Color. Jacket itself is awesome, fit is comfortable and great. Fabric is 200 Windwall Fleece - it's NOT like Polartec or regular double-sided fleece, outer surface looks and feels like TKA 100 fleece, inner one has different structure, a lil bit "noisy" and lined with thin dotted nylon fabric. So i would say, it's better to wear this Jacket alone, not as inner layer. My Husband tested this Jacket (paired with regular short sleeve cotton t-shirt) on windy day with temp. 42-45F. He was cold, but wind didn't go through, so windproof option is as expected. This Jacket is also zip-in compatible with most TNF zip-in compatible outer shells.
This is a great fleece jacket. I was skeptical about how well this would stand up to the wind, but today I've been outside in 30 mph wind gusts and I can't feel a thing! Probably not the best thing to have if it's raining (like the description says above), but great for cool dry weather. The fit is pretty true to size and is a little on the "athletic fit" side, which I think is better when you are using in technical situations anyways. It has sturdy zippers on both pockets and two pull toggles at the bottom to really cinch it up tight. I highly recommend this jacket!!!
Bought this jacket for my dad last christmas and he wears it EVERYWHERE. Since he works construction, he was looking for a lightweight jacket that wouldn't get too hot inside his machine, but blocked some gusts when he got out of it and temps are in the 30-40 range. This jacket was the answer and it has definitely shot me to the "favorite" position ahead of my other siblings. He also uses it when he goes snowshoeing while the mom and bro are out on the ski hill because it does breathe quite well. The material is definitely thin, but it is very soft and functions as a great mid-layer/aerobic activity outer layer. I'll probably buy one for myself too... BTW, Dad is 5'9" 155 and a medium fit great. Very true to size.
I love how the jacket feels and looks. the bittersweet brown color is, indeed, the color of bittersweet cocoa powder. i'm 5'7", stocky, 33 waist, 42" chest, and the size large fits comfortably loose. a medium would have been a good size too (tried one on), but with much less room throughout the shoulders and chest. i like the extra room so i can wear a hoodie or what not underneath. the jacket is very soft and very light weight. does block all of the wind, but not all of the cold - so, it's great for layering.
so, why "bittersweet"?? because it doesn't have an inside pocket, and that sucks.
Just Kidding KathyG. Yes I believe a Hyvent or Precip or something like that would be great for wet cold weather. Fleece is smoother than Polartec. aHair doesn't stick to it as much and I think it won't pill as easy as polartec. I still think the Poncho thing is not such a bad idea :)
I'm very satisfied with this jacket. It's warm, soft and protect you from the wind. The lack of internal or napoleon pockets makes me give it a rating of just 4 stars. Much better than the Apex Bionic in look, touch feel and wind protection.
Bought for 21 year old son for Christmas. It's nice looking, very warm, lightweight, very nice quality, and true to size. He loves it. Great alternate to snowboard jacket for winter months. Would highly recommend it.
I have the women's version of this jacket and love it. Bought this one for my 68 year old father for Christmas. He is really happy with the present and wears it on his morning walks. Great to layer or wear on its own. The blue is a beautiful shade.
at first, the inside of the sleeves are rough and a little uncomfortable, but after a few wears, it is extremely soft and comfortable. it does a great job of keeping the torso warm and lives up to its billing as a windwall jacket.
i have been outside in cool to cold weather (mid 50s, maybe not cool for most reading this review haha) for hours at a time and this jacket has been up to the task at insulating my body. the jacket is reasonably lightweight considering its abilities.
