The North Face Venture Jacket is a lightweight, waterproof breathable jacket great for trekking and travel use. Keep the Venture Jacket in your pack or suitcase and you'll be ready for an unexpected downpour. Despite being lightweight, the HyVent DT fabric is tough enough to stand up to everyday use. HyVent DT is a highly breathable, waterproof fabric with a raised microdot inner surface that acts to lift the shell fabric away from your skin. This provides a comfortable, soft, easy-sliding feel while maximizing moisture transport away from your skin. The result: you stay drier and warmer. This combination of waterproofing and breathability makes the Venture ideal for keeping the elements out. *Please note: TNF outerwear tends to run a size larger than you might normally wear. Please consult the sizing chart to determine your proper TNF size.
Bottom Line: The North Face Venture Jacket keeps you dry and comfortable without draining your wallet.
I'm in Charlottesville, VA for school and it rains a lot more here than it did at home. I recently got this jacket and wore it walking around campus in a downpoor. It worked great! I usually get a small in North Face but I found the sleeves were too short for my 5'9 height when I tried on a friends. Also, I like the medium because I can layer a NF fleece under it when it gets cold! Essentially, this is the best thing since sliced bread because I no longer have to carry a crazy umbrella that doesn't work half the time. This is lightweight and packs right in my book bag! Two thumbs up!
I'm looking to wear this in Ireland, where it's constantly rainy and probably a bit cold. Will this jacket suffice or should I look for something thicker? What would you recommend?
Hi Elizabeth- This jacket will certain take care of keeping you dry - however, it is a lightweight travel rain piece, and you will still need to layer under it to keep warm. Hope this helps
I bought this for my 21 yr old daughter for christmas and she is in italy for a semester abroad-she loves it! She cannot believe how it breathes and how comfortable it is to wear and easy to pack. I may get one for myself...
Great to pack and wear with or without North Face jacket underneath. Good range of motion. My husband and both boys have one in men's. Everyone stayed warm and dry in Canada. A great jacket that does what it says it will.
I am 5'4 120 lbs and have wide shoulders. i am small on top but usually purchase size m in shirts due to my shoulders. do you recommend a small or med. in this jacket
If this jacket was a North Face performance fit I would probably point you toward a medium, but since it is their standard fit which more generous, I think you are going to be better fit in the small. Hope this helps-
I bought this jacket just before christmas, and it has come in handy so much already! I am currently attending university in Alabama, and rather than snowing a lot it rains a ton... so its been a great jacket! My only regret is that it is a little short on my waist, and i got a large when i would normally wear a medium. However, i am 5'7 so if you were a little bit shorter than would reccommend this jacket 100%!
I can't decide on a size. I am between a medium and a small. I'm 5'3", 135lb and 34D. I am thinking i should get a medium to cover my top dimensions. Thoughts?
I am the exact same dimensions, minus 5 pounds however, I am about an inch shorter, but the chest is the same, and I was very happy with my small and I had room to spare.

Write your question here... am hiking in NZ am 5.8 #145 would like something that covers the behind and would accomodate a number of layers, including fleece under it what would you rec for size
I love this jacket, but it will probably not cover your behind. One of the first things I noticed when I it arrived was how short it was, it hit right at my hips. I'm 5'4 weighing just a little less and was able to do a size small and fit a couple layers under it including a a thin fleece base layer with a fleece vest.
This jacket works really well! It's waterproof, lightweight, and fits well. It folds into its own stow pocket, too - so good for traveling! It's very breathable with underarm zip vents. I recommend it highly.
I'm 5'6'' 125lbs with a small torso and shoulders. Will an XS fit me and allow room for layering? I like a jacket to be at least relatively close fitting, and I often find that even a size small in most jackets is too large for my shoulders.
I purchased the red North Face jacket for my boyfriend for Christmas. He used it so much and it was so versatile that I decided to purchase it for myself. This is my first day to wear it and I love it!
This jacket is the perfect waterproof/windproof/breathable jacket for walking, hiking, camping, wearing around downtown. I love it so much, I'm tempted to buy another in a different colour. I fit a SM nicely but bought a MED because the sleeves were too short on the SM. Lots of room to layer with the MED.
IF you're looking for a running jacket, this one is OK, but I would recommend The North Face Prophecy Jacket for running. The Venture only has pit zips - The Prophecy has pit zips and zips in the front for more ventilation or pockets.
Anyone know when the black will be in stock in a size medium? I have this jacket already and I love it! But the color I have it in is super bright and I feel self-conscious wearing it across campus :]
They probably won't get anymore in stock since it is a previous model and some of the colors are already becoming discontinued. And if you love it so much who cares what anyone else thinks right?! It sounds to me like they should all be jealous they don't have one too!!
classic. from north face comes the venture jacket- a highly water resistent/proof jacket that works as a rain jacket or as a shell you can layer a 200 or 100 weight fleece in such as the khumbu or natasha from the north face line. living in the northern california where rain has been scarce the past few years, i thought i'd update my north face collection by adding this wonderful jacket when i head down to santa barbara in the fall. The material packs down really tightly so you can stash it in a backpack on a hike to the mountains or throw it in a locker for a rainy day.
I bought what was called a "rain jacket" last year but it was not waterproof. I can say this is a rain jacket and is 100% waterproof. Very light weight! Great Jacket!
The resolve is a two layer construction (has a hanging mesh liner that protects the waterproof coating on the inside of the jacket), and the Venture is 3 layer (what protects the waterproof coating is laminated to the actual jacket fabric). The 3 layer construction on the Venture makes it lighter and more packable, while the two layer on the Resolve costs a little less to construct...
The Venture is a great lightweight, waterproof jacket. It keeps you dry in a downpour, and it's comfortable and breathable. Also, it folds into it own stow pocket, so it's great for traveling. It's one of my favorite jackets!
I'm around 5'9 and 130 pounds. I'm looking for something lightweight for the spring and fall. I intend on layering underneath do you recommend a medium or a large? I have long arms and I want them to go over and cover them. Also do you recommend the venture parka? Can it be used for winter?
My jacket was perfect for the all weather needs in Yosemite and Tahoe in early June. Rolls up easily to fit in the camelback and light enough to never know it is there until you need it. Then it is dry, wind stopping, warm, etc.
I'm new to outdoor sports and to North Face. I'm seriously considering the Venture jacket but I'm unsure of what size to get. I'm a 5'9" girl at about 160 lbs. Sleeve length and torso length are my main concerns, but I'd also like to know if it's possible to layer a decent sweatshirt underneath a medium. If you have any insight, I'd really appreciate it! (oh, and how easy would Daffodil Yellow be to clean?)
If you are planning on layering with this jacket, I would go with the large. I don't think nylon face fabric like on the Venture jackets is all that hard to keep clean.
This jacket is perfect for rolling up and stowing in a backpack and light so that it doesn't way you down. It has great wind and rain protection. I take it with me on all my excursions here in Europe!! Plus the fit is made for a woman so it looks nice and isn't bulky. Very nice.
I was thinking about getting the venture jacket, but im unsure what size to get. im in between 5'1" and 5'2" and about 125 pounds. i have an athletic build and was planning on getting a medium but someone around my size said they got an XS and it was big. Any suggestions ?
I would suggest a small for you both! I'm about the same size (except a few inches taller) and have a small, and it fits great..and there is still room for layering underneath. The sleeves are long enough as well.
It works great for the rain and the wind and the vents make it able to where even when it's hot and huimid, However the hood seems really large and is kind of obtrusive when you have it on. And llisten when they say a size smaller. I got a small when I normally where a medium and it fits perfect
I'm looking at getting the Venture possibly in white and i was wondering if anyone could tell me if this jacket material is easy to clean? I don't want the jacket to get dirty and then not be able to clean it all the way.
I wasn't sure which size to order (normally wear XS in TNF gear), so I ordered both the XS and S. I'm 5'5 and 120lbs (athletic build), and the XS fit well in the body, but the arms and jacket were a little short, so I went with the S, and now have room to layer a Denali fleece. Something to note, this jacket is very fitted compared to other rain jackets I looked at. It goes in at the waist and then has a dramatic flare out for the hips. As I have narrow hips, the flare is a little much for me, but again, should be good for layering and adds a little more style! Haven't tested in the rain, but am confident from other reviews that it will keep me dry!
So far I'm really happy with my jacket. I haven't had any really heavy rain to try it out in so far, but in moderate rain it has been great.
Pros:
-Great hood. It's huge without any cinching (haven't tried it, but I bet you could wear a helmet underneath) and you can both tighten it around your face and tighten a cord in the back so it pulls back from your face. With this adjustment my face doesn't get rained on, but my hood also doesn't hang in front of my eyes and obstruct my vision. -Nice features for being as light as it is. Pit zips, double flap over front zipper, lots of adjustors. -Pretty good for avoiding clamminess.
Cons:
-Kinda short. The proportions in the photo are very misleading... the width has been pulled in on the sides which makes it appear longer. It hits me at the top of the hips and exposes my stomach when I raise my arms above my head. I definitely wish I had bought the longer parka version. -The fabric around the cuffs is super stiff. The first time I wore it with the wrists tightened, it chafed my wrists big time. After breaking the fabric in a little it's better, but still not highly comfy.
As for fitting, I'm 5'6'' 125lbs with a small torso, and I bought an extra small. I can layer and layer and layer underneath, I can even fit my down jacket under it. I usually buy a small or extra small in jackets. Unless you don't mind a baggy jacket, size down.
Does anyone know the difference between this jacket and the Sierra Designs Hurricane HP jacket? I'm going to school in Bellingham next year and need a good, packable rain jacket.
I've been reading/comparing reviews for both the Venture and the Resolve. I'm leaning towards the Venture because it sounds slightly slimmer (no lining) and a bit longer in the torso area. Is there currently a 20% off on these outerwear?
Also, the Venture doesn't have the elastic wrist but does it make a BIG difference not having it (as the Venture Jacket)??
I like the Venture because it is lighter and more packable without the lining. I also prefer the velcro adjustable cuff tabs of the Venture vs the elastic cuffs on the Resolve. They don't appear to be 20% off but you may want to check via the live chat.
I found red and dark Purple North Face Venture Jackets on Trailblazer. I googled the North Face Venture Jacket in the color I wanted and found a large selection of colors there.
I was looking for a simple black rain jacket, and this is definitely it. It does run big, as others have mentioned. I am normally a size medium (I wear a size 8) and a size small fit. My only complaint is that it is not longer in the back. It comes to the middle of the butt---I would prefer it cover the butt. But---really cute, totally functional, and a great value.
Hi! I am trying to decide between TNF venture and the patagonia rainshadow - TNF is about $99 and the Rainshadow is $150...is the Rainshadow "better" or just more expensive? i live in Hawaii and am going to Alaska for vacation...thanks!
Frankly, both of these jackets are very similar. Both are waterproof and breathable and have fully adjustable hoods and pit zips. Neither is lined, and both instead have textured inner surfaces designed to wick moisture and feel softer against your skin. Both are also very similar in weight. I think the only notable difference is that the Patogonia jacket has a tab that allows you to stow the hood rolled up.
Its awesome to layer under, however, as a previous review stated I wish it were a bit longer. Which is saying something as I am 5'1" and I bought a small in hopes of layering a sweatshirt and my denali fleece under it as well. I most likely could have gotten a small however, I like longer sleeves but the torso is incredibly roomy although I only weigh 120lbs. I have worn it in some really rainy conditions already and I stayed completely dry and it really blocks out the wind too. Great buy and for the cheapest price I have seen.
I expected to be slightly more "substantial" but it is a true wind breaker style jacket with a good hood. I think it will work well for my purposes, but I was surprised at how thin it was... still considering if I want to exchange for another style.
I just bought the venture jacket...now I noticed the parka. How much longer is the parka? And what do you think is best? I'm a college students wanting to wear something to class so I don't have to lug an umbrella.
The Parka is 2" longer. I think the best jacket really depends on what you are going to be using it for, as well as the looks. The jacket is probably a better choice for camping / outdoor recreation due to lighter weight and packability. The parka might be the better choice for more of an around-town piece. At the end of the day, the look probably better differentiates these two pieces- jackets tend to be more popular in the western half of the country, parkas on the east coast...Hope this wasn't too much info.
I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest, and this jacket has served me well heading into the wet winter season. The hood stays nice and secure if you zip up all the way. Jacket fabric does a FANTASTIC job of blocking wind. It is definitely water-resistant, even through some extremely wet distance runs I've gone on. Sizes do run large, as others have noted. I have a small and can easily layer other clothing underneath if I want to.
Hey everyone. I actually have this jacket in red. I really like it for the fact that it can be buttoned up really tight so that nothing gets wet that is covered by this jacket. However, if you are in Mississippi as I am, with high humidities, you will sweat, if you aren't wearing a long sleeve shirt. If it's not in the heat of summer when our humidy is AWFUL, it's a great jacket!!
My body measurements are just a little larger( about an inch) than your chart, does this by any chance run a little large? I am going to New Zealand and Australia in April, and it seems the perfect thing. I want something very light and packable, wind breaker, rain repellant.
If you are larger then the XL on the chart, then you may want to consider a men's jacket. That said, this is a shell and so will have some room to it as it is an outer layer.. if you are ok with a slightly tighter fit.
I recently wore my Venture on a 4-hour hike in steady rain. My hiking buddy wore a Marmot Precip. Afterwards she had to wring the water out of the fleece she was wearing underneath. Under my Venture I was dry, dry, dry. I've had it for almost a year and it's still going strong, I wear it almost every day. Now I'm going to get the Venture pants to replace my Marmot pants.
If the resolve jacket is lined, and the venture jacket isn't, what makes them so different that there is a $20 price difference? I have yet to find a difference, other than the lining, which appears to be on the cheaper one.
Hey Griffin,Ahhh, the beauties of marketing:) I don't know that there is really a good reason. They decide what they're going to charge and maybe this is one of those cases where TNF decided to throw two prices in the air and wherever they landed was the price of that jacket. There's no real sense sometimes.
Do you know if North Face put out an Old version of this Venture jacket. I tried one on at REI and like the fit, but want to make sure these are the same jacket. I have made that mistake before. They are all out at REI! =( Thanks =)
A year ago I worked at a store that sold the Venture Jacket. I worked there for 4 years and it that time the style never changed, only colours. I don't *think* they've changed it within the last year.
I purchased this jacket for my 20 year old daughter. She loves it! We were taking a trip and our luggage was limited. It was light weight and great to pack. It kept her dry on rainy days and was perfect on windy days when on the ferry and in the mountains. Shipment arrived just as promised - the day our flight was to leave!!
I have this in the discontinued Alba Green and the color is brighter and more spring-y than in the picture. I'm very happy with the fit, but I'm petite so I expect others might find the sleeves too short. I love that the hood cinches in the back. It's stood up well to snow and high wind; I haven't had the chance to use it in heavy rain yet. It's lightweight and packs down small enough to always keep in my bag just in case.
I don't know, how big are you?---------------------I would say you should order the size that will fit you. Check the sizing chart.---------------------I fit a SM but ordered a MED because I have long arms and the sleeve length was too short in the SM. The MED is great for layering.
I bought this one when I had "lost" one just like it and could not go without it the 2 weeks it took for it to turn up. So now I have two, but they are great and now I can keep one in the car for whatever weather pops up. Also this one is a perfect "Carolina Blue" for those who want to show their UNC National Championship Tar Heel spirit off.
I am really happy with this jacket. It's super comfortable, light weight and easy to pack in my little backpack purse. I love the fact that it doesn't wrinkle! The color is really nice too (Kelpie Green)...it just looks nicer than your average rain jacket. I wouldn't mind if the jacket were a little bit longer in the back (to cover my rear more), but it's not that big of a deal. It still hits about half way down and the draw strings help it to stay in place.
i want a rain jacket that can double for snow showers/icy rains. i am in the mountains in virginia and want a jacket that will keep me warm but not smother me. all i can find are ones like this that are just a shell, for warm weather, or serious snowboard jackets. do you know any other styles that you can recommend me?
Look for a jacket with a zip-in fleece lining. They're sometimes called 3-in-1's.Exactly, and usually the better ones will be composed of a goretex type of material instead of nylon. It will stand up better to the freezing precipitation.
I'm looking for a waterproof rain jacket for hiking for my daughter who is teeny, tiny...under 5ft and probably 90-100 lbs. I'm afraid the Resolve or the Venture might be way too big. Any thoughts?? Alternate suggestions??
Well, I am 5'1 and 120 lbs, curvy, athletic build and I have this jacket in XS. Actually it's a little big, but I like the fit. If she isn't too curvy, it sounds like a girls L size would be more appropriate. I would have thought about getting the girls L, but it is a little tight in the chest area (I wear a 34C), and does not fit well over my hips; but for a leaner girl, the girls L would probably be a better choice.
Extra Small would be good I'm 5'2 110 and I love it. It looks great by itself and I still have room to wear a sweatshirt under it.XS is definitely the right size. Also consider the Marmot PreCip, it's a good jacket at a reasonable price.
I love this jacket...Recently ran a 5K in it...Handled the wind very well. The under arm zippers were great at the end of the race for cooling down...with out ending up freezing. I have also washed this jacket twice already and comes out Great...good as new. Very light weight, and deep zipped pockets.
I need a good waterproof jacket, but breathability is also very important since I'll be using it when hiking in the mountains. Can anyone tell me about the breathability factor? Thanks.
It is waterproof and breathable for walking around but for hiking ... especially uphills, I find moisture inside the jacket - I was told that it was not from the rain coming through but my body heat tramped inside it and formed a layer of "condensation".---------If you wear a breathable fabric as your base layer, you should be OK, but if the jacket is in contact with your skin, you might find that it's not so breathable.
wasnt sure that it would fit. tried it on and it felt a bit loose. tightened the elastic bands. now it fits like a dream. with or without layers underneath. great jacket for finicky new england weather. xs was true to size.
I was wondering if anyone has had to wash this jacket yet? Does it need to be dry cleaned or can I throw it in the washing machine? Is it resistant to staining? I was thinking of getting the white but I wanted to be sure I could bleach it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
gay2472472, Wash it at home, no dry cleaning necessary. I recommend using a Nikwax product like a wash-in or a spray on waterproofer after you're done washing it.
Although I haven't gotten to wear this jacket much (it's still 100 degrees + here, ugh) I love it. The fit is great, the color is nice, and the details inside just add to it. The North Face makes great products and I'm glad backcountry carries so many of them and at a price better than other stores. Thanks!
I was wondering for just regular rainy days in North Carolina, which coat would be better, the north face resolve or venture jacket? What are the differences between the two?
I have both.. I like the resolve one better because I zip mine all the way up and the lining around the neck is fleece. The jacket is overall more compfy. The Venture is great, the sleeve openings are adjustable & its very stylish.
My 18 year old daughter received this jacket for Christmas and loves it. She goes to school at East Carolina and it rains in Greenville all the time. She wanted light weight so that she could wear it winter and summer.
I am getting ready to go on a trip to Washington state and need a good rain jacket. I want this one, but I'm not sure about the size. I'm 5'4" and 140 lbs. Not sure if a Medium or Large would work. Any feedback?
I just tried this one on in the store. I am 140 lbs, but 5'9. Normally I wear a M/L, but this jacket fit best in a size small. There was even room for a layer underneath. If you are thinking M/L, I would go for the M.
I ordered this jacket for a trip to the UK and it was a lifesaver! Of course it rained at least once daily and I didn't even need an umbrella with this jacket. It is completely waterproof and I like the extra length on the front of the hood (covers your hair and face.) Was true to size and lightweight. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a versatile rain jacket!
I use this jacket to ski in on warm spring days, its brilliant. It keeps me dry without causing me to over-heat, while giving me lots of freedom to move and stay active. I'm thinking of buying another one in a different color, that's how much I like it.
I am looking for a rain/ snow flurry jacket I live in Greenville SC adn was wondering if this was going to keep me warm enough to use to walk to and from classes during the fall/ winter down pours?
This does not have a liner inside, it is just a basic shell. But you could use this over a fleece or a sweater. you will need to put some sort of insulation underneath this to stay warm. But it will keep you dry.
You may want to look at the Venture Parka as opposed to the Venture Jacket. It is significantly longer length and will probably fit you better than the jacket version.I am about 5'8" and thin, but the small jacket is too short in the arms and torso for me. The thing to watch out for on north face items is the sleeves. Even if the torso is longer in a different jacket, does not mean the length in the arms will be longer. Get it in 2 sizes and return what does not work.
Bought this for my daughter who has been walking a rain-soaked campus this fall. Here in SC, we don't need much more than a thin shell and this one fits the bill just perfectly. A great shell at a very reasonable price.
the Resolve is slightly less expensive because of the material used. The Venture is more likely to keep you dry from the rain but also dry because it is made with the core venting material which will be more breatheable. For the difference in price. I would invest in the North Face Venture
I purchased Venture Jackets for my teenaged daughters last Christmas. They love their jackets so much I had to buy one of my own. I am 47, 5'7" tall and weigh 158 pounds. The medium fits me perfectly. It is form fitting enough that it looks attractive over lightweight clothing, but I can comfortably wear a sweater under it. The Fever Pink is a beautiful color and I get lots of compliments. My daughters have jacktets in light blue and white. My oldest daughter is in college and says her white Venture, which she keeps in her backpack, is indispensable. It looks good with everything she wears. I want to add that I have ordered jackets from Backcountry.com for everyone in my family and their customer service is wonderful. Love them!
I had this jacket in size SMALL and just bought a Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket recently in size EXTRA SMALL. I'm 5'4" short (or tall), 120 lbs heavy, and measures 33 on the chest. The Patagonia Rain Shadow fits my body better since I'm on the high range of Patagonia EXTRA SMALL. My size SMALL North Face Venture Jacket was a little big on my body since I'm on the low range of the sizing. With the Patagonia Rain Shadow even at EXTRA SMALL when I wear under it a long sleeve baselayer and a fleece jacket it still is comfortable. With my SMALL TNF Venture, with a baselayer and a fleece under it still is a little too big. Fabric wise, I like TNF Venture Jacket just by 1 point better than the Patagonia Rain Shadow because it seems softer and less stiff and eventhough they're equally weigh the same THF Venture Jacket "SEEMS" to me to be slightly lighter.
My jacket arrived in only 3 days from Backcountry Outlet (even though I ordered the free ground shipping), and that was just in time for the rainiest weekend out here. I was canoeing in pouring rain for 4 hours and my fleece underneath stayed miraculously dry. The water-wicking effectiveness might have been partially because it was so new at the time, but I was the only one in my group that wasn't soaked under my jacket. The hood worked pretty well too, but it was fairly windy and it blew off a couple of times. I got the brown XS and the sizes must run big because I would normally wear Small, but this was still roomy enough to wear a fleece hoodie underneath and have breathing room. It isn't really tapered as it looks in the picture, but it still looks great.
I got this jacket after reading both good and bad reviews, but thought for the (reasonable) price, ok... If you are sitting still and not moving, the jacket keeps you dry. However, even with a bit of activity(biking) combined with hard rain means you are soaked inside. Yuck. 0 breathability. So much for hyvent. I became so frustrated with this jacket I bought a Mountain Hardwear Typhoon... Gore Tex is the real deal...
This jacket is designed as a straight forward, lightweight, fully waterproof rain jacket so the hood is a fixed design and is not hideable or removable. The really nice feature of the hood is that it not only cinches around the face opening but has a draw string that cinches around your head so when you turn your head side to side the hood moves with you and you don't get lost in your hood.
I live in Chicago so it can get really cold. by far this is the warmest jacket I have worn and not bulky at all. I ordered a size small should have ordered the xtra small. It runs a size large but I don't care it still looks good.
no! it is actually so thin it's perfect for a warm or cool rain totally recommendedIn the winter you will want to layer a fleece underneath it to stay warm, since this has no insulation properties.
i am very happy with this jacket. I live in the south where it is VERY hot. I keep it on hand for rainy days - we get random showers alot, so it's great because it's light weight, has zipper vents, and keeps you dry! It does look nice - not bulky
Overall I am very pleased with my jacket. It is light, wrinkle free, and easy to carry. I got my size, medium, and it fits great! It is a little big around the wrists and the hood tends to be big, but it does have pulls on hood to tighten, so that helps. I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a light, durable rainjacket.
The Venture does not have a second inner zipper for zipping in a liner. It is designed as a lightweight rain jacket and forgoes the second zipper to save weight. You can still easily layer any fleece underneath it to warm things up when it is chilly out.
We received our rain jackets and packed them up to wear in the Washington State rain forests and while exploring rainy beaches. They zipped up easily, are well constructed with good pockets, lightweight, and kept us dry. They stored easily when the sun came out.
