The North Face Ultra 104 GTX XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

All this “multi-sport shoe” stuff can be confusing. We'll level with you—The North Face Men's Ultra 104 GTX XCR Trail Running Shoes are totally legit running shoes. But the Gore-Tex waterproof breathable membrane, burly outsole, and supportive midsole also take this shoe into light hiking and approach territory. The Ultra 104 Shoe's forefoot plate winds back and forth between the medial and lateral sides of your foot. Unlike solid plates, this woven plate allows your foot to bend and flex while still providing rigidity. Torque control supports low arches for optimal pronation guidance on your runs and climbing approaches.

Bottom Line: Trail runs, light hikes, and rock-climbing approaches.

Very Supportive

By:
September 16, 2008

This trail shoe rocks! The constructed outsole and midsole really takes this running shoe? into light-hiking territory. Everything that is said in the description is true. Very comfortable, the vivid color scheme with reflective markers - cool, and with one-of-a-kind colored lacing. The lacing is based on mountaineering boots and it also features the "catches" instead of the eyelets, so you will have to adjust them to get your desired fit. I would not suggest to wear these above the 70-degree mark, XCR gets warm. And the shoe-size is actually a little roomier - perhap compensating your selected socks, so I would also suggest, not to order a half-size down. Other than that, I think they're really worth buying - Just like the quote from ROBOCOP, "I'd buy that for a dollar!"

The Great Out Doors!

By:
June 13, 2009

I am a pool tech. and I'm outside from the sun to come up til it comes down. It's spring time now and in Chi it's been really wet. These shoes keep my feet dry all day long, and there is nothing better than to come home with dry feet and not having to peel off my socks. They are pretty comfy and not so heavy, only thing is that when it gets real hot out they get a bit hot. Other than that I love them.

They should do fine. North Face shoes are generally on the heavier side and thus on the tougher side. My last pair of Ultras have outlasted two other pairs of running shoes. Granted, I try to avoid pavement because it works over my knees.

Good hiker!

By:
February 16, 2009

I used these shoes in my first 25km trail race an they worked great on the muddy wet course I encountered.
They have good support, and they seem to be built in a way that would make them good for hiking also!

More of a hiker

By:
November 13, 2008

This is a great shoe. It has a stable wider foot base that is great for any obsticles. The shoes are tough and durable under any conditions. I would recomend these to anyone for a hiking shoe, but as far as trail running they might be great for some, but i would recomend something like coopers hill.

I skimmed the northface site and couldn't find any 2008 model compatible with them. Kind of TNF to think of product longevity, huh?

Huge improvement over the XCR 103

By:
November 18, 2008

These are great, a huge improvement over their XCR 103's which I had issues with. North Face replaced them with these 104's and I absolutely love these. One feature I liked on the 103's was the front of the sneaker was very tough/hard, you could kick a rock and not feel it. These are a little softer, which is fine, but I liked the "steel-toe" effect that the 103's had. But I had so many issues with the 103's that I couldn't care less about the toe right now.

I totally love these!

By:
February 3, 2009

I got these shoes because I wanted a light hiker for the weekends that was more durable with more traction than regular running shoes. I have found these to be extremely comfortable and great for hiking or for just wearing around. I am an ER nurse and walk around nonstop for 12 hours a day and so far these are my favorite work shoes. They are support my foot and I've noticed that I don't have any back pain related to poorly cushioned footwear. The Gore-tex is really sounds cooler than it is functional because if you step in a puddle deeper than 3 inches your getting wet. Nice feature in wet mowed grass I suppose...I think they look cool and have been great so far for me. Good job TNF!!

I loved the shoe! Great feel and comfortable. I had to return mine because I got the wrong size. But I would highly recommend TNF shoes, I've loved every pair I've ever had.

awesome design, quality, and durability from the North Face

By:
December 30, 2008

Typically, I am leery of the better part of North Face's products, as it seems that in general, whatever type of product North Face designs, Mountain Hardwear has designed a similar one that is better suited for my needs. However, in the case of North Face's "Ultra 104 GTX XCR" trail runners, I was pleasantly surprised at the durability, features, comfort, and overall quality put into this shoe. I purchased these primarily as a light hiking and backpacking shoe and am pleased to announce that these definitely surpassed my expectations! First of all, they are extremely comfortable due to the "Northotic" insole, generously spacious width, and ability to customize your lacing system, via regular and wide-based lacing eyelets. I've hiked up to about 18 miles per day in these shoes, and have never felt any discomfort. Secondly, the gore-tex lining in these shoes makes them my personal favorite pair of hikers when the weather is expected to take a turn for the worse. They are surprisingly warm and extremely waterproof. I noticed that another reviewer mentioned them being treacherous on tile floors and other slick surfaces, which I must agree with. Seeing as these are hikers and not really intended for indoor use, I did not deduct any points from my rating for the tile floors or wet slick cement. However, I've noticed that traction is somewhat lessened when crossing streams and creeks on moss and algae covered rocks (This is why I gave them 4 stars) Lastly, as I previously mentioned, I have done extensive hiking in these and even some lighter backpacking, but have been skeptical to take them along on any super lengthy backpacking trips where a more heavily-weighted pack is needed due to the lower cut and lack of ankle support.

Trail-runners indeed

By:
February 11, 2009

took these babies trail-running through the winter thaw down in Turkey Run State Park in Indiana this past weekend. The shoes went through mud, water, and still-frozen creek trails with ease. Feet stayed dry the whole time. highly recommend for trail running. i also wear these around town to keep my feet dry and looking cool whenever it snows.

Darn Tough Shoe

By:
September 18, 2008

I just took mine up Castle Peak in Colorado. I hit mud, loose boulders, snow, everything you can think of. My foot stayed warm the entire time (thanks Gore-Tex!) They're a little low cut if you're looking for some ankle support and when the snow got above the ankle rim, it got a little wet inside, but when I took them off at the summit, they dried super quick (10-15 minutes). Might be a little heavy for trail running, but great for backpacking and hiking!

Good enough

By:
January 5, 2009

I got these for my husband. He really wanted another company's shoe, but they don't make his size (7). So we settled for TNF brand. I have to say we're pleasently surprised. Only complaint so far is they are heavier than desired. He's still making adjustments to the shoe laces to prevent heel slip but the end is near. Thanks to TNF for making sizes smaller than men's 8. Way to keep an open mind! Also thanks for not making such narrow shoes anymore. We were shocked they have such a wide toe box - a-typical for the brand.

The North Face-Ultra 104 GTX XRC

By:
January 9, 2009

I had researched extensively for a pair of lightweight non-ankle supporting shoes to wear on the Pacific Crest Trail. I found that these are the closest most rugged shoe before you take the next step in cutting off your ankle freedom, but still prefer lightweight. Two pairs of thick socks and strategic lacing and you've got yourself a nice set of wheels. One of the key elements I like is the wide outsole, which reduces tweak significantly thus making it more of a hybrid than comparable trail runners. I had a pair of Solomon's that I adored for their bullet proof construction, but I ended up developing bunions due to a narrow toe space, the Ultra 104's are a superb remedy.
Bottom Line: Huge rubber sole makes for more milage, comfy, supportive foot space, wide traction, lightweight, and customizable lacing.
