Pack your gear and a just-in-case sleeping bag in The North Face Terra 40 Backpack. The North Face's suspension system adjusts to fit your torso length, and an open-air mesh trampoline across the back panel keeps your back cool. If an overnight stay is part of your plan, zip your sleeping bag into the lower bag compartment. Pull on the Terra 40 Backpack and tighten the hip-belt to transfer some weight off your shoulders. As the day heats up, take off a layer and stash it in the front stretch pocket. When you stop to enjoy the view, secure your trekking poles in the pole-loops so they don't tumble off the mountain.
Bottom Line: The North Face Terra 40 Backpack carries gear for a long day on the trail and a sleeping bag for emergency overnights.
Not a question specifically about this pack. I'm looking for a new daypack, 30-40L, that is both hydration system ready and has mesh side pouches for 1L water bottles. A 3 pocket system would be nice: a lower one for wet clothes/shoes, a main compartment with side access, and a pocket in the lid. It needs to be compactable, preferrably in its own lid, so I can store it in my kayak hatch for kayak to hike day trips. And it needs to fit my 6'3", 235lb frame. Does this backpack exist?
It meets your 30-40L capacity, is hydration system ready, has mesh side pockets that can hold 1L water bottles, a 3 pocket system that houses your wet stuff in the bottom, a main compartment w/ side access. It doesn't have a lid, but has instead an outer pocket on the main body that can house your smaller items. It has a hip belt so you can go the distance and it also lacks a molded frame sheet which would hinder you folding this backpack up and stuffing it in your kayak.
This thing is really nice, and I have actually been wondering if something what you are asking for existed for a while now. It's nice to know it does!
I havent even used this pack yet but was amazed at what i could fit in it. The last pack i used was an 85L Gelert explorer (which i still love) that i used on a 2 day hike at Glacier National Park. That pack total weight for that trip was 75LBS. I probably used a third of the crap i loaded in it and therefore decided to find a midsize pack to downsize and lighten the load for shorter excursions. I am not a minimalist and enjoy my comfort even on short trips. Before i took the tags off i decided to preload this pack. In the sleeping bag compartment alone, i currently have a kelty crestone 1 solo tent, a Karrimorr global traveller 700 sleep bag, a GSI dualist cook set with propane cannister and a msr pocket rocket stove. I also have a Katadyn hiker water filter and a small coleman 3 aa cell lantern. In the main compartment I have preloaded 2 full changes of clothes a waterproof shell, a 3L camelback resovoir( with 1.5L of water) and about 4 pounds of dead wgt to simulate food and miscl items and this pack is still asking for more!!! I havent weighed this load yet but when i slipped this pack on I could'nt believe how comfotable and balanced this pack was on my back!!! Excellent buy at a good price for a pack of this quality.
Most likely. As long as your torso is under 20 inches you will be fine. To measure your torso, measure from the base of your neck (run your fingers down your neck and the first vertebrae you feel is where you need to start measuring) to the middle of your waistline. Measure a few times until you consistently get the same number to ensure accuracy. BTW... this same pack is 90 bucks on cabela's website.
I've had a difficult time finding a bag that would be comfortable for me as I am only 5"2. This bag adjusts in multiple places so I was able to find the perfect fit for me! I also like it holds a hydration pack and it's big enough to even hold my rope! Awesome bag and definitely worth every penny!
To free up space in my packs, I would some times attach my military issue 3L camelback to the exterior of my pack. It had four rings that I would use small caribiners to attach it. It also made it easy to remove and refill without having to empty and repack my kit.
This pack has a hook and pocket in the main compartment to suspend a hydration pack. The tube comes out of an opening above the left shoulder strap. Oh hold on a second, the terra 40 has these features. I'm not sure about the 30.
This pack DOES NOT have an adjustable suspension system. The Terra 60 does. I called the North Face and they told me that the information on their web site was a mistake. DO NOT buy this pack without trying it on first.
Otherwise, it seems like a good pack if it fits you. Mine did not.
thanks for the advice, I went into a Sports Authority to check it out and with the waist support fastened, the shoulder straps sat a couple inches above my shoulders. With some weight bearing, I'm sure it would adjust a little but not enough to fit properly. I'll have to try the Terra 60 adjusted. Was hoping to find something to possibly pass as carry-on... wishful thinking I think.
I am thinking about buying the terra 40 but i dont know if it will fit i am 5 to 5.1 and a i have a 28 to 29 waist and i am 116 pounds will this bag fit?
I would definitely get the small if I was going to buy it in your situation. Measure your torso from the vertebrae that you can feel at the back of your neck down to the crest of your hips. If that measurement fits the torso measurement provided, then you'll be fine with the pack.
The pack does what it should. If you want a good priced pack with decent room, this one will not disappoint but neither will it impress. The looks and color selection are pretty cool. It would be better with an adjustable susp. system. Great for the casual camper looking for a good performing weekend pack.

Great use for weekend trips and more, was originally looking at the tera 60 but decided that i wanted to try to start packing lighter and it worked i feel no need to bring so much stuff anymore cause there isn't as much room, makes me feel better about camping! Hammock camping also takes away weight, love this pack!!
I just ordered this pack and am assuming from the picture that there is not straps at the bottom any recommendations on how to attach a sleeping pad to this pack?thanks Cameron
Put it inside.Their are 4 loops at the bottom. With additinal straps you can attach a sleep pad to the bottom, or to the 2 side compression straps. The loops at the bottom are small in diameter so you will have to use thin straps or small bungees.
This is a great pack for anyone who is looking for something that is durable, adjustable, decent amount of room and that is very comfortable. I recently got to use this pack on a 4 day camping trip. I am someone who packs as light as possible. I prefer not to even bring a tent when I camp, and this pack made it for me. The only down side I found to this pack was the weight. It is almost 4lbs for a 2450cu in pack. I currently also have the GoLite Pinnacle pack as my ultralight backpack and the weight difference is pretty amazing. But, besides that this is a great pack. I would highly recommend it for anyone who is doing overnights or maybe a weekend hike (depending on how you pack).
I am thinking about bying this pack. i am 5'3" 120 pounds with about a 16 inch waist. i would use it for 2-3day scout trips. what i am most worried about is the waist belt. will it fit me comfortably? i dont want to carry 30-40lbs on my shoulders alone.
Two things come to mind. First, this pack comes in one size... being 5'4" and 125 myself, I would personally look elsewhere for a pack that comes in S M and L and get the small to ensure a better fit. Second, putting up to 40 pounds in this pack may make it uncomfortable. Keep in mind that this pack is only 2450 cu in so even getting up to 40 pounds of gear may be difficult. If you do plan on carrying that much gear, I'd probably suggest a larger pack as this pack is probably more suited for overnight trips.I am 5'11" and have a 34" waist. the waist belt is pretty stiff 0n this pack, but has straps on each side to tighten or loosen the fit on your waist. The sternum strap is also adjusable up or down, to keep the shoulder straps from digging into your arms. I have loaded this pack with 30-40 lbs of gear and its pretty stabile and comfortable on my frame. I think you should test fit this pack before buying. I dont think this pack will adjust to a 16" waist well.
Picked up this pack before going on a week long trip to Montana. This bag held everything I needed. It's much lighter than the other bag I was interested in and the price was great. This pack only weighs 8 more ounces than my sleeping bag. The only thing I was bummed out about, was that there was no little rain cover hidden close to the back of the sleeping bag compartment. Other than that it has everything you will need.
I have to say, considering the name on this bag, you get way more than what you pay for with this bag. Excellent storage. I just got back from a weekend in Colorado and took everything I needed for my four day trip. I could even carry it on the plane! Plenty of room for everything you need. My only problem was that the water bottle containers were too small for the likes of a Nalgene or one of the Backcountry.com bottles. They would fall out if I bent over too far. But, the adjustments were easy and the pack fit great. No rain cover though.
I'm planning on buying the North Face Terra 40 for my 12 yr old son for scouting trips (2-3 days). He's approx 4' 10"...is this a good pack for him? I am concerned about the comment I saw ref: non-adjustable straps.
That pack is huge for your son, the North Face Terra 40 is a great bag, but it's got to fit. You should probably look into youth packs for your son.The straps adjust, the 40 does not have an adjustible suspension to raise or lower the pack on your back like the slightly larger tnf 60.
i am thinking of getting this pack for my gf she 5'2 in height.. would this be okay for her to carry around in travel trips? or should i get a bigger bag?
It should be fine. Get her a size Small. This pack is fine for overnight backpack trips if you pack carefully and is plenty for non-camping travel. This is a good volume for a backpack.
Great pack for those weekend camping trips. Easy access for the sleeping bag at the bottom so you don't have to pull out other gear just to get to it. Numerous pockets to store lot of small thing you may want to get to without unloading stuff. The back support is great. Once the straps are snug the pack stays firm, no movement whatsoever. So far the best pack I have owned.
Hey all! I'm very interested in the Terra 40 or 60 for weekend camping (3-4 day). It seems like either of these packs would work. Any other ideas for a weekend pack for 3-4 days, holds sleeping bag, same amount of room, but also has a break away pack for hiking? Also, what are your thoughts on TNF Extreme 60 backpack?
Unless you have minimalist gear or your friends are the "pack mules", the 40 doesn't have enough room for a 3-4 day hike, I'd say more like a day or two at most. I have used an REI Gemini 50L (which has a break-away pack) during the summer months on a 3 day trip with no problem but I worry about room for winter trips. My Osprey Atmos 65L barely had the room. I'd go for something bigger for a 3-4 day hike like the Gregory Palisade or another 70L+ pack, if you like this terra 40 you should check out the crestone 70, it would be better for that length of time. The TNF 60 has a little more volume than the 40 and also has an adjustable suspension that the 40 lacks.
Great pack for weekend trips, and I plan on using it for my 7-day excursion through Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks...most comfortable pack I've ever worn...and the sleeping bag goes in the bottom compartment, for the guy who said it goes on top.
I took a 17 day trip to greece and I packed enough clothes, and souvenirs in it. I pack light but this pack was comfortable and very effective. I never go on a trip without it.
Write your comment here...Ineed a lightweight ladies rucksack for 3 weeks holidaying in S. America. Could you recommend something that would suit. Have been researching but am 'boggled'. Anna
This pack does not come with a rain cover as mentioned below. And is not waterproof!!!Then you should send it back - tha pack is not permanently waterproof, right - but it does come with a yellow rain cover that is in an additional sleeve next to the bottle holder outside (look for the umbrella icon).
Took this to Burning Man to hold my clothes and sleeping gear. Held lots of gear, very sturdy, never let me down! Great pack, though I wish I'd bought something larger
I just got mine a few weeks ago and no rain cover was included. Looks some may have gotten lucky.Mine did not, and according to the specs, it does not come with one. I bought an aftermaket cover because this pack is not water resistant.(just to answer another question)
pros= i have hiked with this pack so much and have never had a problem, so much can easily be fit into this pack, the shoulder straps and hip straps are comfortable and do not chafe and adjust to a verity of sizes, there are ample lashing straps and out side pockets, large brain for storing maps and such, insane amounts of padding on the straps that make this pack sooo comfortable, water bladder compatible, i dont know if it is advertised or not as a water proof/resistant pack but it keeps water out very well even in harsh down poors, awesome price
cons= the only problem i found was that after a two week long hike on the AT there was a slight tear where the shoulder strap meets the pack this was easily fixed
I actually put mine in the bottom, theres a zip compartment for your bag. With additional straps, their are 4 gear loops at the bottom of this pack that you could also lash a sleep bag or pad to.
Such a great price for this pack. Love the pocket selection, and the pack carries gear well and fits nicely once you get it all situated and fit to your body.
