The North Face TKA 100 Glacier 1/4 Zip Fleece Pullover - Men's
The North Face TKA 100 Glacier ¼ zip is a soft microfleece pullover perfect for layering or just bumming around on a crisp spring day. TKA microfleece is extremely lightweight, resists pilling and fading, and keeps its shape so it won't get trashed in a single season. The TKA 100 is quick drying and has a relaxed fit so you can really get some slacking done.
Bottom Line: Wear the TKA 100 Glacier Zip alone for slacking or layered for technical use.
1st of all, this website is legit. customer service couldn't be better, and they have good prices. this is my second time around with this pullover and my first one goes with me everywhere. i sleep in it when i go camping, throw this on after surfing, lounge around the house with it. for a 100, it is surprisingly warm. i would go with any color but black though as it tends to attract a little hair and lint. but this is a QUALITY fleece that doesn't cling.
I absolutely love mine. I am a wide shouldered person and it still fits me. I wear it everywhere and it still looks great and it is warm considering it is lighter weight than my other fleece. Will buy another.
I mine wear both indoors and out, as a standalone piece and under a shell. It is an incredibly versatile garment that I can't live without. Mine has undergone frequent use and dozens of washings, and so far I'm impressed with the quality. The exterior does not pill, and still looks pretty sharp. It isn't the cheapest in its class, but I've owned many fleeces that crapped out much sooner than this.
I mean no offense to other reviewers, but I have no idea what product they are referring to.
I have become increasingly disappointed in the quality and value of The North Face products, particularly those costing less than $200.00. I use that price point because items at that level, or greater, seem to embody traditional North Face quality; below that, they are mediocre, poor or plain dismal. In the case of the fleece pullover, even at the sale price it simply costs too much. While not terrible, it is something that one would expect in Target or Walmart; for no more than $19.95. The North Face is not the only name brand whose quality had been compromised in the interest of profit. However, it is a shame to see it deteriorate. BTW: it continues to be a pleasure to deal with Backcountry; good service and an excellent return policy.
You didn't even have any real complaints about this item, except that it didn't cost enough for you. To share a little perspective, I have 2 competing pieces from "lesser" brands (Geoffrey Beene, and some Kohls brand), sold for $45 and $29 respectivley, and they DO NOT come close to this. The fabric has pilled, they've lost their shape in the wash, the fit wasn't as good to begin with. It's much simpler than a ski jacket (or whatever) that costs $200+, but it's an extremely well made 100 weight fleece pullover.
This is the only shirt Ive bought twice and loved. My first one got destroyed, but I thought this shirt was so good I had to buy it again. Ideal for just about everything. Its light but not too thin. Warm but not too hot. Highly recommended if you want a do-it-all layering piece.
I got an older version of this thing awhile back, and I really like it. at one point, a cafeteria malfunction left it covered in mustard, and I thought it would only be good for sweaty, active, by-myself use, but it completely washed 's pretout after maybe 2 times in the laundry. It's pretty warm, but it isn't good for biking in the cold, as the wind gets through it. I got it for $20, and I'd gladly buy another if the price comes down that low again.
The Glacier is really nice ''warm, soft'' shirt/base layer.I have not really had the chance to test it out in very cold conditions yet. But I know it will perform great. I plan on wearing it under a Gore-Tex jacket so I'am sure it will kick ass. So, as for feel, fit and overall construction of the Glacier I give it 5 stars. Thanks again Backcountry.
You can find cheaper dealers and they go for around $20 on ebay, but Backcounrty.com is always a pleasure to deal with and ship extremely fast! All questions are met with a courteous staff, and frequent emails. So if you order more than $50 consider the free shipping a discount on this fleece and heres what you get:
I originally got this fleece to wear under my UMSC cammies (the Anemone Green matches OD Green and USMC issued fleece are worthless.) I took it hiking in the Blue Ridge of Virginia and loved it. Now in Afghanistan I wear it while flying in open bay helicopters in low temp, and high winds. I've bought three more and am never disappointed. I highly recommend this fleece, but agree with a previous poster; below 20 F it is best to have an UnderArmour base, and a softshell (I recommend an Arcteryx Gamma SV) to really appreciate the convenience and warmth of this very light fleece.
I have bought two Glacier fleece jackets and love them both. The lightweight 100 TKA fleece material is perfect for a moderately cool day. The jacket fits snugly so it is perfect when worn alone or as a bottom layer for cooler days. I layer the Glacier with a TNF Resolve jacket on cool, rainy days and with my Pumori fleece on colder days.
For size comparison, I am 6'3", 230 lbs. so I bought the XL which is snug but not too tight.
hands down my favorite shirt ever. Despite what others are saying, I quite like the cut. It looks good on me, and feels good, too! Looks excellent even after many many washings. I have two, and wear them around the house, out and about, and as a layer for city stuff under a jacket. Very comfy on its own outside in 50+ weather.
If worn under a shell and over a base layer, will this be warm enough for lift served skiing and the 20 minute walk across campus in the single digits? Or would one of the Icebreaker products be better suited for my needs?
Adam, I guess it all depends on how cold natured you may or may not be. I am not very cold natured and I own the TNF Chesterson Crew, which is very similar to this item only it doesnt have the upper neck band (which should help in cold temps) and it also doesn't have the zip. I wore my Chesterson under my Montbel UL Down Parka without a base layer under the fleece in single digits with wind gusts from 15-30 mph (and many of those days were sustained winds making the actual temp seem more like a lil under 0). However, as already stated, I am not a cold natured person so it does me just fine. if you're not that cold natured I would imagine this shirt would fair well especially with a base layer and a good shell to go over it. Icebreaker may be a good one to look into; I have no experience with those, but hear good things about them. regardless, this is not a bad deal for this shirt. I am actually looking at one for myself cuz my Chesterton doesn't have a front zip to dump heat when I'm really active. Give it a shot and if it don't work out send it back to BC for a refund. You can't go wrong with a BC test drive!
I always wear one of these all winter. Very comfortable and fits me well - 6'4" 210 and XL fits perfect. Warm, but won't roast you if your doing something more active. Only compaint I have is that they tweak it every year. I have three different years of these and each one has it's own little quirks.
This is so very comfortable. Great layer for inside or outside. I highly recommend this piece. Great back packing layer if the temperatures are in the 30 - 50's. I use often to sleep in inside my bag. As with most TNF items very stylish as well.
Not a bad lightweight fleece, it just did not fit me well. I have owned two other TNF lightweight fleece pullovers, the Aurora and Cirque Delta, and both of those fit me better. The TKA 100 shirt felt too tight around the chest and back and under the arms, and did not slide on and off very easily. Thankfully, I bought it here, so it was easy to return.
The SDS fleece is designed to be a chunkier sweatshirt-type for everyday wear etc., and is meant to be worn as a shirt (and you would just put on a jacket over it.) In short: great casual shirt for work/classes.The TKA microfleece is designed to be a light layer in your arsenal for warmth and versatility for changing conditions. In short: great layering shirt for the trail and aerobic activities.
This is a great fleece. The cut is firm and its muy comfortable. It's so nice that I've been looking for excuses to wear it... 70 degrees, yeah that's cold enough to need to a fleece. The same great feeling as being wrapped up in a hoodie but when a bit more sophisticated style is required, like a date.
I bought this and the TKA Micro 1/4 zip fleece; they were both so good that I ended up buying 1 more of each. I'm a fan of Marmot fleece, but honestly TNF fleece is better. It blocks the wind very well, is lightweight, and sheds dirt better than expected. Quality is first rate.
The TKA 100 is a great fleece pullover. Great for just about anything. I am hitting the slopes next week and it will be worn under my jacket. I had one last year and it worked well on the slopes as a good layer, until it got stolen. If you have it, bring it back, please
This shirt is great for layering. I am 6'1" and 180 and the large is a perfect fit. I wore it everyday for a season of skiing as a midlayer and during hiking as a perfect fleece.. I works well in all settings as it has the perfect mix of casual wear and technical clothing. It is well built too as I have had it grazed on trees and rocks and it has suffered damage so far.. Top quality from The North Face as always.
Soft, light and comfy... medium fits me perfect at 5'8" and 155 lbs. I have it in 3 colors, and wear them all the time... casual nights out, at the office, and out snowboarding on the weekend. Biggest problem I have with this fleece is keeping my girlfriend from stealing it from me so she can wear it.
The TKA 100 Glacier pullover is excellent. It is so soft! Great as a base or mid layer for cool evenings or early mornings. The length is good but the sleeves are just a little short. Be careful around velcro with it. Other than that it is great.
I bought this fleece to take backpacking with me to be used as a mid layer below a waterproof shell when hiking or with a softshell for when it was really cold. It performed a treat. Also came in handy on its own when it was a bit chilly but too warm for the softshell. I liked it because it was very light, didn't take up much room and was well made.
Is this cut similarly to their Flight Series gear? I ask because I sized up when I bought the Cipher jacket and it fits great, and I have been reading from different people that you should go a size larger. I am 6'4'' and about 200 lbs. Thanks for your help.
I'm 6'1" and 195 lbs. and I fit into a large of this quite nicely. It has good room, not binding at all, but might be a little small for you. If you like snug gear for a midlayer though, this in a large is pretty decent.
I ordered this fleece as a layer for skiing. Combined with a wicking layer and jacket I stayed quite warm for 4 days in 20 deg temps. I ordered a large and thought the sleeves were a little short, but I am 6'-4" and have long arms... Overall, I'm very pleased.
I had a TKA 100 that I love that got melted from being too close to the exhaust on my leaf mulcher. This one is much different though. Fit is snug(unless I am gaining wt over the holidays? Bough a large and I am 5'10" ~190 lbs ) and the collar is cut in an odd fashion. I was going to return it, but the box and receipt got tossed.
This shirt is amazing! It is an awesome base layer or great to wear over a T-shirt in the summer and fall and even better over button ups in the winter months. And the material feels great unlike the Vaporwick fabric.
This fleece is very comfortable, and I would highly recommend it. It's very casual, great as layering piece or on its own depending on the weather. Very sharp looking, and fun to wear around with a pair of jeans.
I bought this for running in the cold weather but ended up using it daily. Very comfortable for casual wear or put a windproof vest on top of it for hardcore running in the cold weather. Simply a great piece of clothing.
I bought the TKA 100 as a replacement to my TNF ultrawick shirt. Though I miss the 3/4 zip of the ultrawick, I love this shirt. Whenever I need a light layer (I live in AK so I need one quite a bit) I grab this one.
On the deep water blue, is the logo white or blue? I bought this online through another online outfit (who shall not be named :-) and it showed the pullover with the white logo, but the pullover they sent to me was blue on blue. Petty, I know, but important...can you answer this?
I have recently purchased the deep water blue color shirt from backcountry, and the logo was blue - despite the picture of the white logo that is on this page.
This fleece is wonderful I have worn it comfortably in low forty, high thirty degree weather. Then when it got down in the twenties I threw my down jacket over it and was just toasty! Great fleece.
This shirt is just warm enough to go under a shell for x-country skiing or downhill. On its own, it offers enough warmth for jogging on a cool spring morning. Washes up great, and retains no odor. True North Face quality you'd expect.
So I got this about a month ago and it's great. We try to save money on the gas bill in the apartment (I'm a college student) and so I wanted something I could just throw on to keep warm whenever, without having to put on my bigger The North Face fleece. This pullover looks great too...I think I might get another one in a different color.
I bought one of these, and went back and bought one of each color. They are perfect for casual wear. Not too heavy, and not too light. I just love wearing the tops and matching fleece pants. So comfortable on the trail, after skiing or just hanging out!
My purchase was great! The order was shipped promptly. The pullover is awesome, very soft and very good for layering. Like The North Face says, it stays the same after washing it in the washing machine.
Ok i have two questions.. first, is the cardinal red more like a maroon or just a normal red. Second I know North Face sizing can be a little off sometime b/c they're meant for layering so if my bf wears a large in other clothes should i go with a XL?
Bought large previous and sleeves too long, medium just right. Am 5'6" and 140 lbs. Great for running in cool temps. and comfortable leisure wear. collar somewhat odd fitting but doable.
Excellent product. Reasonable price, nice fit, very light weight, and soft as a baby's bottom! Very warm too, especially for the weight of the material. Hopefully, North Face will keep this one going!
The Pullover shirts were a big hit Christmas Day. They are warm and cozy, perfect warmth for a midwest winter day when the abnormal warm winter days don't demand a coat. Thanks for a great website and prompt service. I always know I can find what I need with you without driving all over town for right size and color. Thanks, Mom.
The TKA 1/4 Glacier pullover is quality. I was looking for something that I could pack on trips that didn't take up much space. This is a light fleece that works well even in really chilly weather (57F and didn't need another jacket). My only criticism is that I wish they made the fleece about a 1/2 inch longer. All in all, great buy and well worth checking it out.
The measurements are beneath the size guide, but if you can't get those, I'd recommend the XL. This is meant for layering and you don't want it too bulky, plus BC.com's return/exchange policy is unbeatable.
I bought this pullover before leaving for a weekend in Chicago in early February 07...winds chills to -25. This pullover was a brilliant addition to my coat and thermal undershirts. It looks great, is the softest piece of clothing I've ever worn, and fits like a glove. I'd recommend this pullover to anyone looking to add a layer a warmth or living in cool areas. You'll not be disappointed - North Face and Patagonia make the best fleece pullovers on the market!
I just purchased the fleece, and it works GREAT. Because it works so well i usually just wear a tshirt, the fleece and my jacket when i go to the mountains. recommend it to anyone who ski/boards
This is a good, light fleece. Perfect for a second layer (on a relatively nice day) while skinning up the Chugach here in AK. No frills. Solid construction. Good looking and great value.
The website was very easy to navigate. I purchased The North Face TKA100 1/4 zip pullovers, and they arrived perfectly packed and very quickly. Overall a very good experience.
this is the most versatile insulating shirt there is, perfect for layering in all seasons. less bulky than a fleece, keeps you as warm when worn under shell.
I'm looking for a warmth layer for backpacking in Colorado & Utah. Often must deal with temps ranging from 30 to 60 degrees while packing up a 14,000 mountains. I want something with a reasonable comfort range so I'm not constantly changing clothes. I have a wind shirt and a gortex rain jacket to go over this. I tend to get colder than most while resting but don't need unusual insulating while exercising. Does this product have a good comfort range, or is there another one that would be better?
This fleece would be a great choice. By itself it will keep you warm into the 50s, but when added to another insulating layer like a down jacket it adds a good deal of warmth without a lot of bulk. I would recommend you ditch the wind shirt (just added weight since your rain jacket will block the wind if it gets bad) and bring along a good down jacket. This fleece with a down jacket and rain shell should keep you warm in just about anything.
Like a lot of the previous reviews, this sweater is a nice complement to any situation. Can be worn with just a tee shirt under and jeans or with some cargos while camping. I have not had long enough to describe its ability to hold together but a very soft sweater for year round use. A very comfortable sweater and great deal.
This is an ok pullover. I have a few other TNF fleeces in Large like this that are cut better. This one is kinda baggy in the body and the sleeves are almost too short and tight.
I've had the North Face TKA 100 Glacier 1/4 zip for a little over a year now, and it's definitely one of my favorite long-sleeve shirts. The shirt looks great, is extremely comfortable, and can be worn for just about any activity. I have the black one, and when it gets cold I don't hesitate to add this shirt to my regular "clothing rotation." This TKA 100 Glacier 1/4 zip shirt is also a perfect 2nd layer to wear skiing/snowboarding. Just get one already! I promise you won't be let down.
this is the best fleece iv ever owned, in fact im wearing it right now,it is a good underlayer and keeps me warm in temps in the 60's,super comftorble, love it A++
I agree, this is form-fitting. I am 5'10", 180 lbs and this fits just right. Not sure if it is static electricity on my end but I find this creases easily, even when wearing and I am not pressed up on anything. Who knows, may be better after I wash it (washed it but have not worn it). Definitely light and keeps you warm. Not the softest.
I love the fleece .... wear it everywhere and I have three diff. colors. but just a warning, the black fleece comes with a BLACK logo. Even though the picture shows a white logo it is actually solid black. Might be petty but the picture is misleading. Talked to customer service and they were fantastic with helping me out! thanks!
Bought one of the discontinued colors (english green) and love it. Great value, breathes well, durable, and continues TNF tradition of solid construction that I expect.
Lightwight, warm, and packable. Excellent fleece. Very sturdy as well, so I imagine it'll last for awhile. Not the best for blocking wind, but that's not what it's for. Throw thin rain shell over it and I can't imagine getting chilly, even in the coldest rain. Looks good on the trail or out on the town.
I hate cold weather and wearing this keeps me warm. I wear it over a T-shirt then put on a light weight coat. I stay nice and warm with out wearing several layers of heaver clothes I love it.
I love this pullover. I purchased this for myself and realized that I need to share this with others, so I purchased several more for family and friends. The prices are good and I liked the free shipping deal. I will definitely purchase here again.
This fleece pullover is very warm and soft. It does not have a technical cut, but I like it better than my capilene. I also have the TKA 100 pants, which both make great base layers in very cold weather. I've warn them on several peaks in the winter, as well as on Denali.
I have 5 of these (in all different colors) and couldn't be happier. They are warm, comfortable, versatile, not too bulky and hold up to numerous washings. Perfect for layering or on it's own around the home or office if you're lucky enough to not have to wear a suit and tie to work.
I bought The North Face TKA 100 Glacier for my boyfriend and he loves it. The sizing is right on. He wears it everywhere: as a snowboarding base layer and for backpacking. It hasn't started to pill and he's owned it for almost a year.
Honestly I get kinda cold for I am a little on the too thin side and need to start eating some of that ole red meat and bulk up the bones but the college diet kinda eliminates that coveted steak meal (I'm 6'1 160) If I bought this again I would go for a heavy weight like the 200 fleece weight, Its nice quality and pretty snug (I got a medium). This would be ideal for spring skiing.
