The North Face Stretch Diad Jacket - Men's - 2009

Spring ski tours!

Love this jacket for spring ski tours!It packs away light you almost forget you have it in your pack!Also works well for road riding and mountain biking or rainy trail runs!Also good for emergencies on rock climbs.
Do not expect it to replace a three ply gore tex jacket in extreme winter conditions!

Do you think this jacket would be good for a ski racer who is in very cold conditions??

I guess it really depends on what you are looking for. This jacket has no insulation so it isn't going to be particularly warm -I'd plan on wearing layers underneath. Buying an insulated shell means you'll be able to use it for more than just super cold skiing, but you'll always be adding layers for cold temps. There are also insulated shells that could work - the warmest that I've seen is the Cloudveil koven plus down jacket - it was rediculouly warm, as in more than I need for 98% of my skiing.

Hope I went in the right direction with this answer - I think this is my best advice for anyone, racer or not.

The STRETCH DIAD is an excellent jacket. Summit Series gear definitely reigns superior. Especially functional during the rain and wind. The water beads up & does not penetrate. The hood is very helpful, but is not stoweable. The jacket runs pretty true to size, but hugs the arm-pit area a little more than other TNF jackets I've owned, and the hand-pockets are stationed a touch higher than on others. It is waterproof, packable, durable, comfortable & extremely light weight. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I know it weighs more but is this jacket as paper thin and flimsy as the old DIADs that weighed 7ozs? or is it a bit burlier now with stronger fabrics?

Flimsy? Umm...No. The jacket is designed to be super light weight and waterproof - both of which it succeeds in doing. I have a "flimsy" older model and love it and just bought my brother a new model. I throw it in a backpack everytime I head out, packs down to nothing, and as one other reviewer put it the Hyvent DT is strikingly competitive with gore-tex. I've used it AT and alpine skiing, backpacking, and around town - never a problem, never a tear. You may want to consider taking better care of your gear or contacting TNF for a warranty issue.

DIAD and gone to heaven

After owning last years model and loving it, I just bought another one for my brother. This is my go to jacket for late spring through mid fall. It packs down to nothing so it can be easily stowed in any pack, arguably handles rainstorms better than gore-tex and my green one was vibrant and eye-catching. Obviously it's not intended as a lightweight replacement for winter jackets, it's for rain. No reason to believe durability will become an issue as I'm abusive to all my gear (this jacket has been AT skiing, backpacking, and mountain biking), and the DIAD holds up.

I've actually used it on a number of occasions for spring skiing and thought it worked great. Capeline stretch top, DIAD with the pit zips open and I was good to go for temps 50+.
Definately wouldnt suggest for any tempterature lower than that.

This jacket is definitely not made for skiing, nor will it substain low temperatures, although it might make a good layering. It's made out of nylon w/ the hyvent dt coating, not gore-tex. It works well on the up for ski touring!

A very appropriate, spring, light weight jacket. The molten red color is very vivid. One thing of note, the mini core vents, in my opinion, are disappropriately placed - they open right on my rib-cage area. It seems as if this is an extention of the handpockets. This 100% nylon jacket, coated w/HyVent DT is strikingly competitive with gore-tex as far as the waterproofing.
