Bottom Line: Get the limited-edition Gore Beanie, and it will quickly become your favorite for all winter activities.
this hat is pretty cool. Ive worn it for about a month now and like it! Very lite and totally wind proof! Very lite feels like your not wearing a hat! Two things....one the side vents can be a lil scratchy on the head! and the website pics don't show you that backcountry puts their logo on the back of the hat in small letters! other than that a pretty cool hat!
Excellent breathability.. it's thin - light enough to wear under a helmet, but still very effective at keeping my head warm. Only thing that keeps it from a perfect 5 is there are these two vents inside that can sometimes scratch your forehead... can get a bit annoying.
I received this beanie as a free gift w/purchase and tried it on when I got it. It fits nice and I can see how it would benefit someone who is hiking in cold/windy conditions. Maybe this will come in handy one day. The North Face and Backcountry.com have embroidered logos on it as well. Great free gift but I would have never purchased it for myself.
The beanie was well constructed and had all the features I was looking for, water and wind resistant, but it was too small on me. I ahve a size 73/4 head size and the beanie did not adequately cover my head and did not cover my ears at all. I unfortunately had to return it.
It kind of rides up on my head (I have a big head and long hair, so that might have something to do with it), so a larger size would be nice. I get by though. I like the "vents" on the side. I don't know about using them for your earbuds, but I put my sunglass earpieces through them instead of under the side. Keeps out the draft. :)
I use this at night to keep my head warm of course, and I have not lost any sleep from the use of this beanie. I didn't even know there are "two vents inside that can sometimes scratch your forehead". I didn't feel them enough to stop my sleeping. I must say the price was right, as this was a gift with the NF 103 XCR Trail Running shoe, so no complaints from me! A great shoe by the way, read my review on them.
The hat itself is a tremendous, small, lightweight option for running in the cold, or back country hiking. However, the existence of two openings on the hat near the ears are in my opinion useless. I'm sure they were designed w/ a purpose, but I can't figure out what it could possibly be. Also, the stitching that closes the gap can be exceptionally irritating if it rubs at all against the skin. Lose these openings and it is a tremendous product.
Thin, light weight, fits in a pocket... but it blocks the wind and it's warm enough for almost all occasions. I got mine for free as a part of a bundle deal, and I'm going back for more. This is a great hat for winter exercise (running, snow shoeing, skiing, etc.). I don't have the problem with itching from the ipod slots that other reviewers mention - mine feels great! I like the Backcountry Goat logo more than the North Face one.
Dont mind if I do. I have a tempermental head (allways too hot or too cold) and this was like a tempature regulation system for my skull. I wish I could buy more.
It doesn't fit very well on me (too big), so I gave it to my brother. He seems to like it although it does seem a little large on him too. If I had to pay for this, it would of went back for a refund.
I received this jacket back in late December and in late January I noticed that the stitching in the hood started to come apart. The jacket is great but I think there must've been a manufacturing defect.
It's extremely lightweight and disappears nicely into a pocket. It worked well in Iceland during some very cold and windy conditions. I was genuinely surprised. At the same time, I would use it as a secondary piece and not a primary one. As long as it's not too cold, it's perfect for wandering around a city for a few hours or hiking out in the wind.
From now on, I'll take it everywhere. I may need something warmer from time to time but it will be in my pack.
While this hat does keep the noggin warm, it is a bit short for my taste. It won't totally cover my ears so it is no good for a really cold day on the slopes.
The North Face softshell beanie is a great hat. It has good ventilation and keeps you warm on a cool day. It even has slots in side to wear sunglasses and still keep a snug fit.
This is a good hat for keeping out the elements, but the fit is weird. It's like it was made to fit a cone-head. Like someone else wrote, the "vents" on the side have a rough seam that tends to scratch and chafe those of us who are a follically challenged. Not my favorite hat!
Just bought this and I agree with other commenters. It's fairly warm and stops the wind, but the vents can scratch my head (I have almost no hair). Also the beanie doesn't want to stay on if i move my head a lot. Another small small gripe is the backcountry logo on the back. I'm glad to have this product (seeing as most retailers don't carry it here) but if I'm going to be sporting something with another endorsment, I should get some compensation for it. Nothing a little black marker won't fix though.
I was amazed to discover that a Beanie this thin could be so WARM! The claim of being windproof was validated during 4 days in Colorado! The only downside would be how much of the ear it covers. Bottom part of the ear was exposed and got a little cold after the fourth Double Diamond. Final Verdict: Gotta' have it!
This Beanie looks and feels good, it is big enough for those with a big Nut and should integrate well with your goggles! As i am in Australia, waiting for the Southern Winter"payback season" we had a shocker last year... i will have to let you know how it performs then. o yes it has a little hole in it for your antenna, or something.
Got this beanie as a gift and I love it. It's very breathable, warm and light. The vents can get annoying if you don't wear this hat just the right way.
I wore this beanie for the first time in the mountains of Wyoming. It did a great job to keep my head warm and the wind did not penetrate. My only complaint was that the slits on the sides for sunglasses kept rubbing on my ears and was a mild irritation but I'll live with it to get the performance I get out of this beanie.
So when I got this in the mail, it was a whole lot more stout than it seems it would be. Wind will never get through this thing. I actually gave this hat to a couple of people for Christmas and they all used it in a different way. My dad, the marathon runner, loved it for its thick structure along with the slits in the side for sunglass temples or ear buds. My friend, the ski bum, loved it under his helmet (yes, it fit). My brother, the film maker, loved it in the outdoor conditions in Seattle. Beware though, it is for people with slightly bigger heads, I looked like a 5th grader in my dad's hat.
I have not been able to find a WindStopper hat that I like. I got this hat and it has worked well for me. I take my thin Merino wool beanie and wear them together to give me a warm wind proof hat. Or I can wear just one or the other depending on the conditions, My 3 in 1 hat system.
