The North Face Redpoint Insulated Jacket - Men's

The North Face Men's Redpoint Jacket takes the place of your fleece with the excellent warmth and low bulk of PrimaLoft Eco synthetic insulation. Whether you wear it as a shell or use it for mid-layer insulation, the Redpoint Jacket keeps you from feeling the chill. A smooth exterior reduces friction when you wear this synthetic jacket with other layers. It also zips into all compatible shells from The North Face, making a versatile combination for a variety of conditions.

Bottom Line: Ditch the fleece and take advantage of the synthetic-insulated The North Face Redpoint Jacket.

Thanks to Primaloft

By:
May 30, 2009

It is a great jacket because of one reason... Primaloft. The cut is blah, there are no pit zips, price is fine. It's just a whatever looking jacket. The reason this thing gets 5 stars is because Primaloft is so so warm for how light and compressible a material it is. There are things lighter, but this jacket does do a nice job for what it is.

I have an older version of the black redpoint jacket. If you look close, it has a greyish "grid" pattern on top of the black color...do the newer versions have this, or is the black more of a "solid" black color?

I think I know the jacket that you are talking about - it was a special edition version from about 5-6 years ago. The current fabric is a ripstop, so you can see a grid if you look very close, but it is not visible like it is on the jacket that you have.

Not the most exciting piece in my closet, but the one that I wear the most. I use it around town, as a piece to stay warm while having lunch backcountry skiing, and as a layering piece in super cold days. Bomber, easy to take care of, and super functional.

Yeah, this jacket is the ultimate cold weather tool. You can wear it causally around town all winter long. You can wear it under your shell on really cold days. And if you do any bc skiing/touring, it stuffs into its own pocket so it packs down super small to fit into your pack.

It might sound like overkill, but when it cold on a food break in rogers pass the other day I put this jacket on over top of my red point optimus hoody and I was plenty warm!

Warmth equal to fleece.

By:

In warmth, this jacket is equal to a fleece-jacket.
This jacket packs smaller than a fleece-jacket. That is the advantage over fleece.

If you are looking for a really warm jacket to warm you up when chilled; get a down-jacket instead. I gave 3-stars instead of 5-stars only because warmer, down-insulation would be better. I would be concerned about warmth in temperatures below 35-degrees even layering a shell-jacket on top. Unlike down, you can hike in this synthetic-insulated, jacket without perspiring.

I am 6'-2" tall, 210-pounds. The extra-large fits me well. The jacket is long enough. Sleeves are long enough, with elastic at the ends. The jacket is slim-fitting, but not tight. Not bulky. A very tailored fit. I could wear a large, but a large felt confining. The jacket does not lift up when you raise your arms. A very soft, pliable, comfortable jacket.

Two, good-sized, zip-pockets to put your hands in, or hat. Small, chest-pocket. Jacket zips easily. Resists stains (I spilled ketchup on it and it wiped off without a trace).

I was glad to find a normal-color offered, Navy-Blue, which was not shiny.

This is a very nice Summer, Spring, & Fall jacket.

Light weight warmth

By:
December 17, 2008

Good synthetic insulations pack a good deal of warmth with minimal weight. This is accurate to say for the RedPoint jacket. There are many other bulkier warmer insulated jackets out there but for the weight and size this jacket boosts very good warmth. I dont know of any fleece that can match the warmth to weight of this jacket. The best wind resistant/ proof fleeces come close but I do not think they surpass. The DWR coating is effective and gives confidence in any snow condition and light rain outings. Zippers and pockets are all good. Fit is accurate and leaves room for light to mid layering under, and a shell fits fine over, no issues here. Adj at waits let you sinch down. another great benefit of this jacket is its compressablity. It will fold up and tuck in to its chest pocket making it as packable as a 100 weight fleece. There are few neg about this jacket. My dislikes are the lack of any lining around the collar. comfort is subtracted here. a two way zipper would be an improvement, as would pit zips. This jacket is pretty much windproof and for this it does not breath that well. also this jacket is not stretchable at all so it does give up points here to a fleece as well as the breathability. the only other dislike is this jacket is like a shell on the inside same material as outer, so if you are wearing a tee shirt and sweat you stick to it like you would a shell. if breathability and flexability are not your first concerns you will be well suited by the Redpoint jacket.

Not a huge fan of north face products, but this one I couldn't help but buy. This is one of my favorite pieces of gear. This is my go to jacket in the winter. Great to wear around town when running errands. Great as a layer under my shell when I go skiing. This jacket is great. The primaloft does a great job of insulating. I am always warm in this jacket, but never overheat. I can often wear just a t-shirt underneath when I go out, and it still keeps me warm. If you are looking for a versatile insulating layer, look no further. You have found your jacket

Heatseeker is North Face's version of Primaloft. Just like Hyvent is North Face's version of Gore-tex. Primaloft is lighter, and warmer compared to any given amount of Heatseeker. So 100g of Primaloft vs 100g of Heatseeker, Primaloft wins. 100g of Primaloft vs 250g of Heatseeker, Heatseeker will be warmer. If you have the option of going for primaloft, I would go with it.

What a great coat

By:
January 2, 2009

I bought a North Face last year, and my husband saw it and wanted to try one. So this year for Christmas I decided to get him one. He will not take it off he loves it! It is warm he takes it 4-wheeler riding all the time and he says hardly no wind comes threw it everyone else has other brand name coats but they don't compare to The North Face at all. Also my father saw my husbands jacket and now he is wanting one, so I am going to have to purchase another one for him.
The coat is very light weight, can easily move around in it, not to bulky at all, zipper pocket at the breast is very handy easily to get to.
Hope you enjoy the jacket, we sure do!

Excellent Lightweight Jacket

By:
December 29, 2008

I bought the Redpoint jacket a month ago primarily as a zip-in liner for TNF Mountain Light shell. It works perfectly for that purpose, providing good warmth for the light weight and a great fit. I have typically worn a men's size small jacket in the past, but found I am more comfortable in a medium in both these jackets. The Redpoint is nicely finished and I can see that I will undoubtedly wear it alone in the Spring when the temps warm up. I live in Northern CA and so far have worn the jacket/liner combo in pouring rain, temperatures down to 16 degrees, snow, and sleet. Complete dryness and perfect warmth have been my reward. It is obvious to me so far that I could wear this combination down to at least zero degrees and be warm, dry and comfortable. The Redpoint as a liner is, in my experience, preferable to a fleece liner. I've had fleece liners in the past, and found them not to be as warm as this primaloft jacket, and I really like the "slippery" effect of the nylon-like material when pulling the jacket off and on over base layers and clothing. What's not to like? BTW; I ordered the "Asphalt Gray" Redpoint jacket to combine with the two-tone blue Mountain Light shell. As I suspected, the Redpoint is the exact same gray color as the lining that comes in the blue ML shell, making it look like it was meant to go with the shell. I have received a number of positive comments from colleagues at work since I've been wearing it.

Mine does NOT have the two-way zipper, but it's last year's model (don't know if that matters though). It does NOT have the summit series logo, just the typical north face logo on the back right shoulder and the front left.It is a really warm insulating jacket, so you might be too toasty wearing it with the optimus.Reply above is correct....same for this year's model. Way way better. North Face has hugely superior gear to REI.---------------I respectfully disagree with "hugely superior." I've got product from both companies and highs and lows from both. In this instance it breaks down to North Face Redpoint having DWR and Primaloft Eco vs. the REI which has Primaloft One (warmer than Primaloft Eco) and has arms that zip off making a vest. As to style, that's personal preference.---------one must also consider the fact of the weight difference. the spruce runners overall weight is 15 ounces vs. tnf redpoints 21+ ounces= redpoint has more loft. some of the spruce runners weight is also in the arm zippers. there is over a 6 ounce difference in weight. tnf redpoint is warmer and thats the bottom line.

GREAT Denali or Nuptse alternative jacket!!

By:
January 12, 2009

I'll start by saying I am 5' 11" 170lbs and bought the size S in this jacket, and for me, it fits Great! After spending the weekend outside in 20 degree midwest cold, I can give this one my seal of approval! It's very light, not bulky AT ALL, with the perfect amount of insulation. What I really liked was how it fit perfectly into one of my older TNF outer rain jackets for extra warmth and wind blockage.
I should add that I own quite a few different TNF jackets and or fleeces along with the Nuptse down coat, and after feeling how nice this coat feels, fits and works with all my other gear, I may just have to put the Nuptse on ebay.
I usually wear my TNF stuff for actual outdoor activities , but if you are buying this jacket for fashion , I would give it an A+ and a great replacement for the Denali fleece so you don't look like every other guy walking around.
My ONLY negative would be that the inside does not have a liner so if you are wearing short sleeves and start to sweat, your arms will stick to the inside sleeves.

Why don't YOU own one yet?

By:
February 23, 2009

I own a TON of outdoor outerwear - just ask my wife. The look on her face will tell you immediately. Out of all my fleece, softshells, hardshells, and multiples of insulated jackets, the Redpoint is the one I use most often. It's the ultimate all-purpose winter jacket. I have an older (4 years ago) jacket, and it still looks like new. It's fairly water resistant, insulates when wet (not down), is easy to wash and care for (unlike down), is wind-resistant (unlike fleece), and is warm considering how low-profile it is. It has a great range of movement, but doesn't look baggy...and you definitely won't look like the Michelin man. I wear mine from about 10F - 40F and zip it into a hard shell if it gets especially cold/wet. It's my favorite piece of winter gear and TNF should keep it in their line-up permanently if they're smart. The only things they could improve upon is adding an interior pocket or two and also adding pit zips. Let's face it, when things heat up, you need to dump heat fast. I have an older (from 10 yrs ago???) Marmot primaloft jacket that has pit zips...all insulated pieces need the feature (too bad it's no longer made). Get your Redpoint now!

Great go to

By:
July 23, 2009

This is a fantastic jacket for throwing on before you go out in the cold. I love the slick materials, they don't get hung up when you put something over or under it. This coat will definately keep you warm, but isn't an outer layer as the material is very thin and will let water get through after a bit out in the rain. I would give it 5 stars but it's a bit big around the midsection for a tall skinny guy like myself (6'3" 180) otherwise it's a perfect coat, exactly what you would expect from an overpriced manufacturer like North Face.
