The North Face Primero 70 Backpack - 3950-4600cu in
The Primero 70 Backpack uses The North Face's vented back panel to provide excellent air circulation and keep you cool during scorching hot days on the trail. When the temperatures spike and your hiking partners look like they're ready to melt, you'll be nice and cool while air flows along your back. The Primero 70 Backpack's perforated waist-belt keeps your hips from overheating. The North Face also added the pivoting X Radial frame system to move with you as it supports loads up to 70lbs. *Not available for shipment to Canada.
Bottom Line: When your weekend hike falls on the hottest day of the year, make sure you're prepared with The North Face's Primero 70 Backpack.
Write your question here...Hey, I'm 6'3", 198 lbs, measure out at 18" torso length, want to make sure a size medium in the primero 70 will be better than size large. Also, 35" waist, is the padded waist belt on med going to be right fit or can I exchange med belt for large belt and install on the medium primero 70?? REI store employee measured me at 18", and I get same measurement when I measure myself. Thanks much....
I would guess that a medium would be OK for you. If you look on this page (or go to the TNF site) and click on the "See Sizing Chart" link on the upper right side of the page it would suggest that with a torso of 18" and a waist of 35" the medium should fit: http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/primero-70.html
If the hipbelt is too small, I believe that TNF does sell them separately, but I don't think that you can get them through backcountry.com.
I've only had this pack for a few months, but I love it. Contrary to other reviewers, I was perfectly capable of finding the two nalgene-sized side pockets. The one large back pocket (with zip pocket) is great (depending on the circumstances) for your raingear, wallet, keys, or the ting that your hiking partner can't be bothered to put in the main compartment. The Compression straps work great, not only for crushing your stuff, but also for attaching things (like rolls of duct tape) to the outside of the bag. The brain is made from waterproof material, to keep your bits-and-bobs dry. As a whole, there's a lot of use of waterproof fabrics (though no pressure seal), so this pack does well in rainstorms, or sitting at the bottom of a boat (though not under submersion), and keeps your stuff dry to boot. The sleeping-bag pocket actually goes into the main compartment, with a retractable diaphragm to separate the two. The suspension is incredibly comfortable even under heavy loads: with a lazy group, I took 80lb up 10 miles and 3000' of elevation. I won't say that I didn't break a sweat, but the pack performed admirably. The airflow is pretty comfortable too. The hip straps use a change in webbing direction to help spread weight comfortably over your hips. The hip-flaps also have a convenient zipped-pocket. Both colour combinations are pretty sweet (though the green is cooler).
I just purchased the Primero 70 and took it on its maiden voyage. What was supposed to be a four day three night trip in the Rockies was cut to two days and a hitch hike home because of tremendous discomfort.
So, I measured out at 19.5 inches on the torso length (which puts me in a large). However, the large seems to be too long. So, the lower EVA back pad fit closer to my tail bone than my lumbar. The hip belt put tremendous pressure on my hips because it sat too low. When I attempted to raise it up to normal position, it killed my shoulders. It rubbed in places it shouldn't have (I have a nasty burn on my lower back to show for it).
Today, I found that the shoulder straps are held into the back of the pack with velcro. Is this the only torso adjustment? Is there something else I should do? I am thinking of selling this one and going for the medium. The pack is awesome except for the serious fit issues. Help?
I work in a gear store and this pack has me puzzled. I am 6'4 with a torso length of about 21", which normally puts me firmly in "large" or even XL territory for pack sizes. Not so with the Primero. I tried on a large and it was stupidly big! Adjusting the back length down significantly helped a little but whatever I did the lumbar pad was sitting on my tailbone and the back panel was rubbing against my shoulder blades. So I went and tried on a medium and found it much better. With the hip-belt and lumber pad in the right position, the back panel was in the right position and the shoulder straps were flush against my shoulders all the way round (which is a good indication of a good fit for any pack).
I don't know what data The North Face were using when they designed this pack. I cannot imagine there are many people who would require a "large" in this pack, seeing as a medium fit me with plenty of length left in the back (4-5 inches). I am sure that the sizing guide is incorrect. Anyone up to a 22" torso should look for a medium, I think.
when ever going to buy a pack go to the store load it up, walk around and see how it feels. I was not a fan of this pack, got it and returned it. The back velcro straps is it, what you see is what you get. Maybe some other gear heads will be more help but i think its just the wrong pack for you.
I've had the pack about 6 months now, and have no complaints. The X radial frame truly is amazing, and makes this pack very comfortable, even at heavier weights. The inside stays completely dry in inclement weather. Recommended!!
I noticed that in the front elastic pocket in some models there is a zipper and in some other not. See in TNF official site: http://www2.thenorthface.com/opencms/opencms/tnf/gear.jsp?site=EU&model=AS8Y&language=en Is the zipper a feature for newer version of this sack?
I haven't had this backpack for long, but it really is a great backpack. I haven't had a problem with my gear getting wet. The frame is amazing, it has great support and doesn't weight almost anything as far as backpacks go. It is the perfect size for everything that I have needed it for so far. I can get my tent, sleeping bag, wet suit all in it and still have a lot of room for other stuff like clothes and food. One really nice feature on this bag is that it has a special spot at the bottom for your sleeping bag that you can get to through the main compartment or there is a special zipper for it (it's also nice if you need to get at something you packed at the bottom of your bag.
Hi, I'm planning on backpacking for a couple weeks (16 days) through Portugal, Spain and Morocco and I'm debating between this pack and the North Face Crestone 75 Backpack.
Any ideas which one I should get or which one would be better? I"m heading there in a few weeks and the weather is pretty warm in all the countries.
The Primero would probably be better for you. It was designed by TNF as a hot summer condition hiking bag, which means tons of back ventilation, perfect for where you are going. The added 5L of the Crestone is nice, but not really necessary. This bag also has an extra pocket, which might be a good thing, might not (pickpockets). This bag weights less though, over a pound less actually, which could be the pound that means you need to pay for extra weight baggage. Either bag will hold what you need, and will be great, but I think that the Primero is the one best suited for what you need it for.
this back pack served it's purpose...i back packed around Romania and the United States during my vacation. The pack came in handy when i got rained on etc...the only issue i have with this are the pockets around the top. There's basicly one pocket on the top portion. I also bought a North Face Ligero 50 which i use to go to and from work and is also waterproof. I prefer the pocket structure on this pack much more then the Primero 70
Just got this pack about a month ago for a 16 day euro trip and it was perfect. I am an over-packer so I got the Large and it was exactly what I needed. Easy to get to anything anywhere in the bag and big enough to hold a ton of stuff and still find room for souvenirs.
The only thing I would change is maybe adding a zipper to the large pocket on the back though it is pretty tight so nothing ever fell out, I was just worried things might.
No! This pack is supposed to be streamlined. You should seek another pack. There are external pockets available from Granite Gear & probably other mfg's, but I agree, you shouldn't need them with this pack. Here's more information:http://www.granitegear.com/products/accessories/armoredpockets.html
The crew at the north face has taken extra care to make sure that you stay as ventilated as possible with the Primero 70. It stays comfortable when fully packed and sheds moisture during those quick summer showers.
