Thin-air junkies need top-notch waterproof protection and lightweight, low-bulk warmth for their winter missions. The North Face Men’s Plasma Thermal Jacket features a fully seam-taped, waterproof breathable HyVent Alpha shell that seals out everything from massive storms to tiny leaks, and its PrimaLoft One insulation packs down small but insulates like the big boys. For extra protection when the wind kicks up, draw the Plasma Thermal Jacket's fully adjustable, helmet-compatible hood close around your face and carry on.
I have the previous model jacket, but thought they are similar enough to leave this review. I've used this jacket for two winters now, and live in northern Wisconsin. It's been an insanely great jacket for the cold weather here. It's like wrapping yourself in your favorite sleeping bag. I'm 6'1" and 165 lbs, and have the XL. It's a little large for me, but still insulates well. The primaloft packs down great, but not as good as down. The plus side of it, is it can get wet and still insulate. So those soggy and humid days don't eat right through you. I brought it as my main jacket on a winter camping in the Boundary Waters last winter with a low temp of -30 F without windchill, and was comfortable the entire time. Obviously layers took part in that as well.. It's not the most flattering jacket in my arsenal, but it's my warmest for the lightest.
The Insulated Varius Guide has 120 Grams of proprietary insulation, while the Plasma has 100 Grams of Primaloft. This makes them pretty close in insulation, but that is about it. The Plasma is a technical lightweight insulated shell, while the Varius is much more of recreational piece (more features, but much heavier). Hope this helps-
What is the difference between this years plasma compared to last years which you have at your outlet currently at a much cheaper price and same colors (Black, Denim Blue)?
