With thigh-length coverage and 600-fill down, The North Face Women's Metropolis Parka warms your whole core. You'll stay toasty in this hooded parka whether you're headed downtown to work or going out to dinner during your Telluride vacation. The Metropolis has both a zip and snap center-front closure so no wind can sneak in and an internal media pocket so your cell phone doesn't get wet.
Bottom Line: This down coat has you covered from head to thigh.
I love TNF and found this coat at SportsAuthority for 278$. Found on Backcountry for a mere 139$ bought it in a heartbeat.
I am 5'5", size 14 and "chesty". The fit is really great. Not too tight and makes me look "curvy" without being a puffy Michelaen man. I love this coat and all it's fuzzy warm-ness, but like Kat, found the sleeves to be too long. I think anyone w a bit of skill can run a quick hem on the sleeve if it's just one turn-up, anything more than that will need a good tailor (i agree w Ian).
I also had a hard time zippering up the jacket - maybe b/c of my short T-rex arms, but it was a pain. I am returning this coat in favor of the TNF Transit car length coat --essentially the Metropolis but a little shorter. Like the lady at Nordstrom said, just cuz you get something cheaper, doesn't make it a good deal... I think the shorter coat will work better for me. Too bad, because I really do like the look of this style. Oh well. I hope this review helps! :(
Can this jacket be altered/ has anyone had it altered and how did it turn out? The sleeves are too long for me and they dont roll well. Thanks for the help!
Hey Kat. Altering technical outerwear is tricky business. You need to find a truly brave tailor that is willing to tackle a down jacket. If there is a place near you that does custom down work they might be willing to touch it, but your average "Jim's Alterations" in the mall won't go anywhere near it. My advice would be to return the jacket to Backcountry and exchange it for something that fits you better. Mountain Hardwear makes a Downtown Coat that is very similar to this one that you might like, and tends to fit a bit shorter. Hope that helps.
I bought this jacket for my wife and she loves it. She's not really use to a longer coat but is really finding this feature nice as it's getting cold again. The outer shell seems to snag and even tear fairly easily but they also patch up very easily. This jacket is plenty warm and I think is extremely cute! I love it on her for sure:)
I just got this jacket and the sleeves are too long. They seem to be tapered and don't roll up well. Has anyone out there had this coat altered? How did it turn out? thanks for the help!
I've seen so many people with this parka in New York City this year that I became a lemming and just HAD to have one. I received mine in ink blue, really lovely color, size M. Definitely could have gone with small but it doesn't matter because I find the coat totally inadequate in terms of warmth. The other reviewers who talk about how warm it is must be very hot blooded. It's lightweight and I guess lacking in loft. I've worn down parkas for years and years and have never felt cold. Until now. What's the point of wearing down if it's not warm and I need lots of layers? North Face, listen up! This is not worth the money -- you have a HUGE following, you owe us more than this.
I got this jacket in the Asphalt Grey. It's so pretty. Not super shiny, just right. It looks gret with jeans and casual clothes. I also wear it with slacks and nice heeled boots. It's very versatile. It hits knee length so keeps your legs and backside warm. Wish I could afford the blue one too!
This coat is great! Very warm and light weight. It isn't as "poofy" as some other long down coats, so you don't look like a big marshmallow! The reversible zipper is great for easy walking and sitting, but you can still do either with it zipped all the way down. I am a size 8, 5'5", curvy and 130 pounds. The small fit just fine. It is a tad snug around the hips, but not bad at all and you couldn't tell by looking at me. The medium was way too big at the top and the arms were too long. The only thing I would change is a little more flare in the hips for us curvy women!
I'm 5'6 120 lbs. It was a toss up between the Small and Medium. The samll fit great if you don't wear alot of layers. I decided to get the medium because I am alway cold and usually have a thick sweater or even a Mountain hardware monkey jacket on. You might like the small!
I got myself a black one in XS (5'4'' and 115lbs). It's very light and warm, but a bit on the large side. Especially the two sleeves are so large on the upper arm part that it looks like I have big muscles -- not that feminine. Otherwise, all satisfied.
I am a coat-aholic and this one leaves them all in the dust!! I ordered the Ink Blue and it is GORGEOUS!! Such a nice change from brown and black. I look forward to wearing ONE coat instead of reaching for several PRETENDERS!!! ONE BIG THING:: if you are around 5'6", 125 lbs, average build and usually take an 8 in a coat--DOWNSIZE!!!! You don't want to miss out on any of the benefits this coat offers--it will not look right if it is too big. I originally ordered the medium and I was swimming in it--don't let the numbers convince you (M 8-10)--go with the S(4-6). ALSO--I had AWESOME customer service from ADAM--very HELPFUL and CHEERY--I was so upset that the coat was too big and he fixed me up with the RIGHT ONE for me!!! All around satisfaction!!! ENJOY!!!!
I would say if you want to wear layers like a sweater or hoodie or fleece to go with the medium. If you're just wearing it over stuff that's tighter to the body, the small would be good, definitely more of a fitted look. I wear a medium and am 5'4", about 140lbs if that helps.
sadly I am 5' 1" and 147 lbs. the size large fits like a glove-- and looks great (although not an eighth of an inch to spare and I can't wear it over layers.) I'm afraid if I get the XL it will be too large in the shoulders and i know the sleeves would have to be shortened (even the sleeves on the large are a little too long, I just folded them under an inch or 2). Any advice as to size? If I lose 10 pounds (hubby's suggested solution) would the XL be way too large or just comfortable?
It sounds to me like the XL with shortened sleeves is the best current solution. I always like to have a little bit of room for layers under winter jackets...
I ordered the Ink Blue color and LOVE LOVE LOVE the color...the fit is great as well. I'm 5'8'' average build 135lbs 38C(LOL sounds like a singles ad) I ordered the Large your using it for winter your going to wear those nice thick sweaters hear in Wisconsin (BRRRRRR) so you have some wiggle room and it's not too poofy at all! It's toasty and again did I mention the blue color is awesome:)
I am 5'2" and about 140. I have this coat in black in large. The waist is a bit roomy but the chest and shoulders fit. The medium was tight in the chest, shoulders and arms when wearing a regular sweater. Coat also goes past knees about 2 inches. Hope this helps.
This is THE coat for women who always seem to be cold. Lightweight warmth with a streamlined look. Size small for 5'7",115lbs.Fits long arms and broad shoulders.
There's no guarantee even the sizes listed will be available when you order-I've had this happen. Ordered and waited with no notification that the size I ordered wasn't available until I called.
nope they dont, i know its tempting to ask sometimes but whatever they have in stock is always on the page, its in the best interest of the company, no use in not listing stuff that they could sell :-)
I really love this coat! I bought it to use for casual and dress. It keeps me warm, comfy, and stylish. I thought the waist would be more "nipped"- took someone else's advice and ordered the extra small instead of the small. Glad I did! I don't really like wearing it for a dress jacket, will probably buy something else for that, but there's no way I'm giving this one up!
I wanted this coat forever and finally treated myself for Christmas. The cherry stain brown was the only color available at the time I ordered so I wasn't too sure I would like it. I LOVE the color and the fit is perfect. I am a petite 5' 115 pounds and even the sleeves are perfect for me in an XS. It is toasty warm and very stylish. I hate the winter but this coat makes it bearable.
I need a size small or xsmall badly- does anyone know where I can get one? I have this coat in black and love it, and would love to have a second one in white
The is a great warm jacket but only after a a few wears the white colored down starts showing up through the seams on this black jacket - I won't recommend it.
avoid mud puddles, and when it comes time to wash it(if ever)you can wash it with this NIK0037... put that in the search bar and press enter, the extra waterproofness will avoid liquids from staining it, but this already has dwr stock...so dont use that untill water stops beading off the surface of the coat
I have been looking for a Winter white North Face Metropolis parka in size small. Can you contact me if one becomes available? I can't seem to find it anywhere, and am almost ready to purchase the girls size XL!!Would it be similar in size?
I bought this coat to wear to the inaugural, knowing I'd be outside for about 8 hours. It was 21 degrees, and with thermals, a wool turtleneck, Uggs and a hat on, I did get chilled. :S I think it's because of where it stops on the legs, which is well above the knees (I'm 5'3"). But it's great for running around, and keeps me warm as long as I'm not outside too long. I also found the fit perfect--I usually wear a 2/4, and I bought the XS.
Hey Joan,You would probably have to check TNF's site for that. I would recommend jumping on "live chat" and asking those folks. They can tell you if there are any more on order, and if so they can give you a rough expected date of arrival.Hope that helps.
Love this jacket. I wear it every single day in the winter. I bought one from LL Bean that has a very similar look. It was a lot cheaper so I thought I'd try it. It just doesn't compare. The North Face jacket is soft and warm and just seems to envelop you without giving you the feeling of being in a straight jacket. I couldn't do December without it.
None unfortunately. The best thing is to jump on "live chat" and work with those folks. They'll be able to look up if they have any on order, and if they do they'll be able to give you a rough estimate of when they're expected.
I love this coat, and I can say this after having bought and returned multiple other down coats/parkas in the past year in my search for the perfect comfortable warm down coat.
What I finally decided I needed was coat with a snap storm flap(after trying them, magnets and velcro do not function as easily), a two-way front zipper, and a hood. How hard is that to find? Pretty hard, actually.
This coat has all of these things plus a sleek design and a great warm city walking length.
I purchased the Ink Blue, and as has been mentioned in other reviews, it's a great color and nice change from the usual black or brown.
I thought I would miss the knit cuffs that other parkas sometimes have in the sleeve, but the tapered and lined cuffs on this one are comfortable and less bulky than knit cuffs.
I hate the big logo on the front and back shoulder, but after resisting trying this North Face coat just for this reason, I'll put up with it because it's so perfect in every other way. I'm very pleased with this coat.
The best thing is to jump on "live chat" and work with those folks. They'll be able to look up if they have any on order, and if they do they'll be able to give you a rough estimate of when they're expected.
This was my first purchase 3 years ago from backcountry and I love it still. I used to do recess duty outside Seattle near the ski areas at an elementary school. This jacket is not only warm and comfortable but looks good too. It is beautiful! It doesn't look like you are walking around in a sleeping bag. It is contoured. It would look great to the office or recess duty:) I have the white one and it still looks new!
Hey Heidi,You'll get the quickest info by jumping on "live chat" and asking those folks. They'll be able to look up if there are any on order and if there are they can tell you roughly when they're expected.
Not a coat for cold weather. The zipper had a notch scratched in the metal. Would not close. I am very disappointed as Northface always has made quality jackets. This one is being returned as the cost does not indicate quality. This is a lemon.
I just received this coat. Bummer. NOT what I expected. I had it delivered 2nd day air as I was sure this was for me. The cherry color is beautiful but the coat is a huge disappointment. The zipper won't close and it has a very thin exterior. Northface makes better jackets. I live in Alaska and, unfortunately, this is being sent back. This coat is not worth 300.00.
The cherry stain brown coat in XS was my daughter's surprise Christmas gift. She was thrilled, and she looks great in it. The color is beautiful. The coat is warm and dressy enough to wear to work. It also comes to her knees, so it keeps her legs warmer. I have the same coat in brown, and I love mine, too.
a lady in your review asked where she could get a 3x size. i would like to know where you can get a 1x the xl is a little tight through the bust i have never been able to find your things a little larger. where did you send this person to get 3 x????
This is what TNF site says to do. Q2: How do I wash my down jacket? Periodic cleaning of down jackets is essential to maintaining maximum loft and ensuring the long life of the product. Though it is possible to wash your own down product, we recommend that you have your jacket or sleeping bag professionally cleaned by a service that specializes in cleaning down. If you do not have a cleaning service in your local area, you may send your product to the Warranty Department, and request that we send it to our cleaning service.
Absolutely adore this jacket. I bought this jacket for a Boston winter and it held up tremendously. It is really warm without the dreaded "marshmallow" look. The sizing is perfect on me, as well. I'm 6' tall and the XL fit perfectly - it is the first jacket I've bought that is knee length and actually makes it to my knees! (follow the size chart, unlike other brands this one is quite accurate).
i got my parka in xs black today. actually i bought 2. one in small cherry stain brown and the other in xs black. i tried the brown one on and it looked ok, but a little big on me. i wasn't too thrilled with the color either. it is not a brown but more of a reddish brown. i'm returning that one.
I tried on the xs black one and it slipped on like a perfect pair of gloves! I LOVE IT! i like that it is fitted around my body and it is very light. you can fold this coat into a tiny little bundle and carry it in your bag if you need to. the length is perfect on me since i am a petite (5'2, 110lb). It is in the 20's today in Chicago and i'm wearing this coat home!
like others, i was a little apprenhensive about the price of this coat, but once i tried it on, i knew that it was worth the cost! i will be wearing this coat for years to come.
lightweight, ultra warm, ink blue color is fabulous, can wear to work as a dress coat (it's coat length if you happen to be short!) and look terrific, also good for casual wear, I'll never need another coat/jacket again!
I purchased the metropolis after much debate. I think it is so worth the few extra dollars from competative brands. I bought the lands end down coat and found the down escaping and returned it to sears after I only wore it once. I am so glad I got the white, which apears actually winter white and easy to keep clean. I was waiting for a navy color and the helpful staff at backcountry suggested I order the white and if wasn't satisfied I could return if they got a blue in. This coat is so toasty warm, I do not understand the one review saying they got chilled at inaugeration in DC. I walked to church below 0 and stay comfortable. I will continue to buy from backcountry because of their great customer service.
I wrote my review but noticed someone not liking the vintage white. Most of my coats and jackets are white and only need cleaning about 1 or 2 times a season. The vintage is so sophisticated and goes well with everything along with dressier than the other colors. I do not roll in the mud with it and just stay aware of real dirty vehicles.
My guess is a medium may be too big for you. I'd base your sizing off of your chest size and waist size. Click the View Sizing Chart link above the "Add To Cart" button.
I have a few coats for winter and my Ink Blue Metropolis is absolutely beautiful. I love it and can't think of anything I would do to improve it. Perfect for in the car, standing in the cold or walking around. I'm 5'9", 150lbs and the medium fits like it was made for me.
This is a great jacket! Other people have commented on the warmth - true, this is a warm coat. But frankly, I am more impressed with the style! I got the ink and it is so flexible. At times it looks navy, then black, or sometimes dark grey. It is flattering and slenderizing. I love the way it gives me a fashion boost even when I am wearing my pajamas underneath! BTW - I got a small and am 5'7" and 125. Arms fit fine.
This is the warmest jacket I ever had. I'm always cold and have to put on layers of clothing to keep me warm. But not with this jacket. One sweater is good enough usually. I just wish it could be a little longer, maybe just past a knee. However, I've been wearing it for about a month now, and I start noticing that the feathers come out sometimes. That's upseting :( Is there anything I can do? Does everyone have this problem or is it defected?
I love this parka! It's light and warm (even in Albany weather. My teenagers call me a marshmellow when I wear it but then again, they choose to freeze with their stylish jackets! Haven't washed it yet so can't comment on the washability. Overall,I recommend it.
I live in Northwestern Ontario where our winters are COLD! The Metropolis parka helps me to SURVIVE! I am also a school teacher and spend many hours on yard duty, so this parka comes highly recommended.
I want to purchase the cherry stain brown. Anybody out there have one? I don't want it to be too orange. I can't find any coat in that color where I live.
Love the color so much I ain't gonna tell ya what it is 'cause I don't want the whole lot of ya buyin' it. love the light weight, love being able to zipper or snap, or both. Keeps me toasty. Lots of compliments. Easy to keep clean. Roomy outer pockets - gloves stay in when not in use. Super coat!!
I really am in love with this coat. It is gorgeous, it is warm. My only complaint is around the cuffs and collar it looks stained. I am assuming from the oils on my skin. It really is unsightly and bums me out. I love the cherry brown color. And it IS warm!
I have a full length black Metropolis with raccoon fur around the hood ...would be four years old perhaps. The zipper pull has broken off and I need to know how to replace it. The zipper head seems to want to open but I don't know how to do it to put on another pull. I am afraid to ruin the zipper.
I bought this North Face Metropolis Parka in size Medium. I am 5'3'' and 158 and it fits beautifully and looks GREAT!! It is perfect. I cannot wait foe winter to come just so I can start wearing it.
I just got my cherry stain brown Parka and I LOVE IT!! The color is awesome- different and very pretty. I wore it today here in LI, NY where it's windy and 25 degrees out. It totally kept me warm!! Another great thing is that it's not bulky which makes driving w/ it very comfortable. Size wise- I'm 6' 142lbs. and ALWAYS wear size Large in everything. I originally ordered the Large and returned it because it was a little too snug on my arms and around my chest. I then received the XL (SUPER FAST THANKS TO GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE) and it's perfect. The XL is just a tad larger. I read some reviews about it running large??? I think it runs a little small. I received so many compliments already and I've only owned it for 8 hours! Great coat!
The Metropolis Parka is a wonderful investment. It is well worth the money. It looks great, not bulky like most down coats. It covers so much more of my body which goes a long way in keeping me toasty on cold windy days. I love the two way zipper that allows the bottom of the coat to be opened a bit so I can sit without feeling constrained. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was b/c if I don't layer, I DO get chilly on really cold days. The down is 600 fill, so I was a bit surprised to feel chilly at all. Of course I'm on the scrawny side...(5'4"1/2, 110 pounds), so that may play a role in the feeling cold. I don't have a lot of insulation!! Either way, this is a wonderful, stylish, functional coat. it's a great investment!
i've worn this coat every day, multiple times/day since i've gotten it. it keeps me toasty whatever i have on the docket (walking to work, shoveling, etc), but it's been particularly perfect for the midnight puppy bathroom breaks. i got the teal color, which is a really nice color that doesn't show puppy paw prints and that you can dress up with a cute white beanie. the only potential negative is that this might not be the absolute warmest option for this type of coat, but so far it's handled the freezing CO winter just fine, and if i need extra heat, i layer with puffy vest underneat and pull up the hood. all in all, sweet coat!
Does this parka have a zipper that you can unzip from both the top and bottom? I'm thinking when I sit down in the car I may need to unzip from the bottom. Thanks!
I decided to treat myself to this coat after already buying 3 winter coats. This was the BEST PURCHASE I made when it comes to a good winter coat. It is so warm, stylish and fits amazing. Love it in black.
I've had my coat for less than a month and wear it several times a week and love the style and cherry stain brown color. However, it's not as warm as I'd like it to be esp given that the down is 600 fill (still feel a bit chilly on cold Chicago days), so layer up for extra warmth. The hood is also not as warm or big as I would've liked. I think a fur lined hood would've made the coat even cuter and definitely warmer. Overall, I like it a lot and would recommend it.
I saw the review regarding the ink blue color very interested in chosing that color I have never seen it on anyone(unlike the other colors).Anyone else have any thoughts on that color? Also would like thoughts on the vintage white, Thanks!
The ink blue is really beautiful in person. If I were in the market for a long coat, that would be my choice. The vintage white gives a very clean and classic look. I would shy away from it, personally, because it's not easy to keep clean (at least for me).
I think this is a great coat. The mid thigh length is perfect for me. I have the Vintage White and it has stayed remarkably clean for these first few weeks. My only complaint was the first day I wore it, one of the snaps on the front broke. I luckily found the piece on the sidewalk and have super glued it back together. Hopefully that will hold it.
This coat is standard issue for Chicagoans in winter. You can't get on a bus without seeing about 5 other people wearing it. I love it because the wind doesn't get through it. It's lightweight and very warm. The hood was what sold it for me though. . .
Is the vintage white similar to pumice grey? I found the transit jacket at Nordstrom and it looks so similar. I'd rather have the metropolis and the price is better as well. thanks
I bought this coat for my College Freshman daughter. She attends college in the midwest (hint; Go Irish!), where the weather has already been frigid. She's ecstatic about this coat. It's the perfect weight, length, and she loves the color: Vintage White. Thank you so much for offering this coat. I'm sure she'll be wearing it for many years to come.
I just recieeved this jacket in blue (iridescent blue..somewhat shiny, but very pretty) and I love it! It doesn't make you look like a marshmallow and is very slimming. I ordered a M (5'8", 140lbs), and it fits good. I probably could have gotten a small, but I figure that I would be wearing bulky sweater or layers under it.
Write your question hereI really need the exact jacket but in olive green and size large. I have one but it is medium size brown. I love it and need the large size and color olive green. You used to sell that color last year. Please find it anywhere and let me know.
This is my first down jacket! I am moving to a colder climate and needed something to keep me warm while walking the dog and running errands around town. This jacket, so far, is PERFECT! I feel like I'm wearing a sleeping bag (in a good way). The color (ink blue) is perfect. I got the XL with the intention of wearing layers underneath if necessary. No complaints! This is my first order from BackCountry and I've had a great experience! I can't wait to test is out more with temps. dipping into the 'teens this week!
