The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Men's Khumbu Fleece Jacket provides midweight insulation and multi-sport versatility for nearly any time of the year. This relaxed-fit fleece works alone on cool fall hikes or under a shell when winter storms blow through. The Khumbu’s zip-in compatibility lets you combine it with zip-in TNF shells for a toasty barrier against harsh conditions. This durable workhorse has a soft, pill-free feel, and its casual style works as well on campus as it does on the trail.

Bottom Line: Midweight versatility for year-round comfort.

nice fleece. i got it for about 50$ so i think it is worth the price. i dont think it is worth 80$ but thats just my opinion. very soft and warm. doesnt protect against wind, but thats what you would expect. much warmer than my denali which i must say is quite thin compared to this one.

When the Denali Jacket is too much...

By:
September 22, 2008

Was looking for a light fleece jacket to use with the North Face Venture jacket, after finding that the NF Denali was just too heavy, and the NF Windwall too warm. After looking at a number of commercial offerings, I pick this Khumbu. It a bit leaner and lighter, so it matches my intended use pretty well- 45F-55F, under a Venture jacket, with wind and rain. By it itself, it is a rather nice jacket for outdoor activities at 50F.

bandsrowla,

you're a virgo, aren't you? Fleece collects stuff. You're going to have to be less OCD about it, and maybe invest in a nice lint roller.

I have the exact same combination. This fleece and the venture shell will keep you toasty anywhere above 30F. The only down side I see is that the fleece is rather bulky. Not very good for backpacking.

Good Fleece

By:
November 11, 2008

This fleece is exactly what is it supposed to be - a great midlayer and a descent coat on those mild days. The small fits me great even over a baselayer, and I'm 5'6"(168 cm) 130 lbs(59 kg). The price of these fleece compared to the other TNF fleeces (aka the Denali) makes it even more worth it.

In addition to what Dave says, you could try using execessive amounts of fabric softner. This would also negatively affect any wicking/breathability of the jacket, but will help some with your problem.

Hello- unfortunately that is generally the nature of traditional pile fleece, and I don't think it is specific to the fleece used in the Khumbu jacket. Being the owner of 2 short hair dogs, traditional pile fleece isn't really an option for me, and I have switched over to is generally refered to as "hard face fleece". These types of fleece have much more dense weaves than pile fleece, and deal much better with dog hair and picking stuff up. An example of this type of jacket is The North Face Momentum Jacket. The other nice advantage of the hard face fabrics is that they tend to have more stretch as well.
Sorry that I don't have any suggestions for your current jacket.

Great Fleece, Watch the Sizing

By:

I agree with most of the previous posts; it's a great fleece that's warmer than TNF's thinner fleeces (the Khumbu is TKA 300).

For me, sizing for this jacket was odd. I'm 6'3", 170 lbs and I usually get large in my fleeces and jackets. For this fleece, I had to get send my large back and get a medium. The sleeve length was fine, but the torso is made a lot taller so it will fit better as a zip-in under a shell. The Large looked awkwardly bulky (long and wide) when I wore it by itself. Medium torso looks great, but now the sleeves are a little short.

I have a NF Vortex TriClimate jacket. The inner shell that came with my Vortex is just too warm for me unless it is really cold outside. Would this jacket be able to zip into the outer shell of the Vortex? Or, would you recommend a different fleece jacket to try with it? Thanks.

When looking at fleece jackets on the site, try to notice the fleece weight. There are 3 catagories, 100, 200, and 300 (light, midweight, heavy or expedition). This shows as a 300 weight, so it's on the warmer end of fleece. Might want to consider something with a 200 rating, like the Pumori (polartech fleece) or Curtis (TKA fleece).

By:

great looking jacket, I got one in grey and it almost looks like a wool jacket. Pretty standard mid-wieght fleece. A nice price, but not a lot of options - cuffs aren't adjustable, no drawstring waist. I think the TKA fleece looks good, but isn't as soft as polartech. Maybe a bit warmer though.

I am looking for a fleece jacket with an athletic cut. At 5' 6" and 130lbs, I have a 37 chest and 28 waist and many jackets fit me like a poncho. Does the Khumbu have a tapered cut and if not, are there others that might fit me better?

The Khumbu does not have an athletic cut. Here are a few alternatives that have much more of a fitted cut:

TNF Khumbu sizing

By:
October 19, 2008

This is a very nice fleece that I received as a present. Soft and warm.
HOWEVER, if you are buying it to layer order down one size.
I'm 6'2" 215lbs with 35" arm length and the XL I own is too big to layer under a shell. I still wear it a lot, but too much material to put under a shell.

Hey Jay. There is no difference. It's all made of the same 200 weight traditional fleece. The "Charcoal Heather Grey" and "Charcoal Heather Grey/Charcoal Heather Grey" jacket even use the same photo. Regardless of which black configuration you buy, you'll get a black fleece jacket.

The Pumori and Khumbu are cut pretty much exactly the same, and they are both excellent choices for a mid layer. They are both 200 weight and have internal goggle pockets, which I always prefer. I think the only difference is that the khumbu is TKA fleece, (TNF's in-house brand) and the pumori is Polartec. It also looks like this years' khumbu model has "monkey thumbs" which are awesome. If they have not upgraded the pumori in a similar fashion, I would recommend the khumbu

North Face Khumbu Jacket

By:
February 4, 2009

I bought 12 of these jackets for my sons, my wife, my daughters-in-law, and me. We all love them. Even when the temp is in the teens, these seem to be all we need. Very warm and yet lightweight. I am 6'2" and about 220 lbs and I wear an X-Large and it fits perfect. I also had to return 4 jackets on 2 different orders and reorder them because I had guessed sizes wrong and had no trouble with getting the credit back on my card. It was very easy ordering from Backcountry.

Perfect fleece for a cool, casual day when you want to stay warm and comfortable without much wind. No pit zips means I don't wear mine when I'm doing something more active for it is warm enough to make you uncomfortable when you begin to sweat. The zip-in capability is useful for days when the elements require a wind- or waterproof shell but you don't want too much bulk. All in all, a solid jacket and well worth the pricetag, especially when you can get discontinued colors for 30% off and still get free shipping from Backcountry.

North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket -- Men's

By:
August 16, 2009

The lightest North Face jacket with the best value, I purchased the Khumbu in dark blue last month for the temperate climate of North Carolina at a bargain $60 shipped. My jacket arrived from Utah about a week early, and the first thing I noticed aside from the professional packaging was the soft, velvety feel of the high quality fleece it was made from. The color of the jacket was as-pictured on the website, and the jacket felt warm immediately after I tried it on. Overall I give a 5/5... this jacket is low-priced, comfortable, and is very, very warm. With the lifetime warranty from North Face, I could easily see it lasting three or four years. The one thing buyers probably need to watch out for though is the fact that this jacket runs big. I normally wear a size large -- this jacket fit well for me in a size medium.

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's - Review by Jean-Pierre Dareys

By:
June 13, 2009

Greetings,

I bought a this very same jacket way back in 1994, prior to a trip to South America. I still have the original and it has served me well.

However, it was time for a new one, and the one I just got was awsome. The same outstanding quality and product and I hope they don´t discontinue it.

Buy one, and if you treat it right, it will give you years of confort and service. As far as the sizing, it is completely true. No worries there.

Jean-Pierre

P.S. I am not throwing out the old one just yet. I just
bought a new one while I could get it!!! LOL.

The khumbu is not meant to be an outer layer. It is a mid-weight (200) insulating layer that is zip-in compatible with certain TNF shells. The redpoint series is better suited to be a stand-alone given the semi-windproof nylon over primaloft construction, but it is also meant to be an insulating layer under a shell. You cannot layer a khumbu into a redpoint or vice-versa.

Perfect casual fleece!

By:
August 20, 2009

I bought my first Khumbu fleece 2 years ago and wore it nearly every day for 2 winters straight. It works great with layers when it is moderately cold, but definately doesn't stand up against wind. 80% of it's use was for casual, wear it to work with jeans or khakis. The other 20% was for actual outdor activity...it was perfect for me when backbacking, hiking or snowshoeing....anything where I was active.

After this much use, it's starting to pill noticeably, and does not look fresh anymore. So, I just purchased another one a size smaller in black to be used for my casual jacket. The best part is that it's so affordable, you can own 2 or even 3 for the same amount as some pricier fleeces. And if they don't discontinue it, I'll probably buy another next year. Thanks for a great fleece North Face!

I have a XXL Summit Series shell and never bothered to go with anything under it. I am 6'2" and 300lbs and the XXL shell seems to fit pretty well besides I love the jacket. Using the khumbu as a under garment is it going to limit my room? Anybody out there in the same boat? Thanks

By:

as long as you get an XXL, the khumbu will zip into your shell (if your shell has the inner zips) and it shouldn't be too tight. The khumbu is a 200 weight fleece, which is pretty standard as an insulating layer. You can go with a 100 (salathe) or 300 (denali) weight fleece depending on the amount of room you want if the 200 doesn't feel right.

Very warm fleece and would bet it is just as warm as the Denali even if it is 200 wt. fleece. I also am not sure why the Pumori is 20 bucks more; it feels lighter to me than the Khumbu...buy it.

the pumori is made out of polartec 200 as opposed to tka 200 which is a fabric made by north face-------------------------------both are 200 weight fleece. The pumori is a little lighter, and definatly softer. I believe it will work better if you want it as a layering piece, something to use when extremely active in cold weather, and also able to use it on it's own. The khumbu is a little thicker, and at least *feels* warmer on its own. It will work fine as a zip in liner, but because it's thicker, it might not be as good for that as the pumori. It's look is a little different, it almost looks like wool (at least my grey one does). If you are looking for mostly a stand alone jacket, but one that could also be used as a liner or layering piece, then go for the Khumbu.

I'd go with the double X. It's going to give him just a bit more breathing room in the waist and shouldn't be too bad anywhere else. I guess if he wants a smaller size you can always return it. They're return policy rocks!Hope that helps.

This is far more meant to be a layering piece than outerwear. It's a lighter fleece than the Denali and it's by NO means wind proof. Also, the Denali will be a bit more resistant to everyday wear and tear.On the other hand, you WON'T see 31 high school girls, 14 jr high boys, and 3 dogs wearing THIS jacket too every time you put it on, like you will with the Denali.

The jacket cost more than I wanted to spend, but it definitely meets my expectations for being both wind resistant and water repellent and warm without bulk. Plus my teenage sons think it looks very cool. The downside is they want one. Well, it will be something to look forward to after college. I hope it lasts as long as my LL Bean fleece jacket which I've worn for about 20 years. It now needs some help.

No. HyVent is waterproof/windproof material found in many TNF coats. This product is a fleece and is not windproof nor waterproof. It's main purpose is as a midlayer under a waterproof shell. The question was "compatible", not "comparable". Hopefully folks ordering from a website such as this and posting on the board are fully aware that fleece and HyVent are two completely different materials. Since as of now I have neither a HyVent shell that is zip-in compatible, nor a Khumbu fleece, I can't speak to the "compatibility".

The Marmot Cauldron satisfies the cold & wind requirements but is a bit more than your budget amount. BTW, bc.com has free shipping on this item which is some consolation. It's definitely worth the few extra beans. The Mountain Hardwear Epic is a good choice too. It's a good price, water- and windproof, and light. The only issue might be the temperature (5 is cold) but if you're moving around, it should do great. The TNF Apex Bionic would be a great choice in this case. It has a DWR finish and sheds most rain/snow very well. It blocks a lot more wind that a standard fleece jacket as well, but still regulates temprature. If you catch a clearance color you can come close to meeting your $100 budget as well.

Nice, but not impressive

By:
September 1, 2009

I wore this thing almost every day last year. It's stylish and a much better value than the Denali that everyone else at my college wears, though it's definitely not as warm. However, I don't really like this fleece for anything other than casual wear. The fit is a bit too relaxed to comfortably wear under a shell (although the waist drawstring helps a bit), and offers no protection from the wind at all. It's comfy when sitting in a cold lecture hall but not when you're a few thousand feet high and the wind is blowing at 40 mph. Also, it doesn't pack very small, in case you were wondering. So basically, it looks super sharp and is nice if you want to jump on the North Face bandwagon and can't afford the Denali. But don't expect this to be a life saver on the trail.
