The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's - 2008
The North Face Men's Khumbu Fleece Jacket provides midweight insulation and the versatility for any chilly season. Wear the Khumbu alone during warm spring days, or layer it under your shell when winter storms blow through. This durable workhorse from The North Face won't pill and feels exceptionally soft. The Khumbu Fleece's relaxed fit makes it easy to wear, and it also zips into The North Face shells. Use it for everything from snow sports to rock climbing to summer alpine camping.
Bottom Line: Summer hiking or winter skiing, The North Face Khumbu Fleece gives you just the right amount of insulation.
Good jacket with potential to be great. This site's description says the fleece will not pill. The sleeves on this jacket started pilling the first day I wore it. Because the fleece is very smooth (unlike regular fleece which has a lot of texture) the pilling is very obvious. Otherwise the jacket is very soft, warm and comfortable. However, due to the problem with the Khumbu fleece I exchanged mine for the TKA.
I bought this to zip into TNF Varius shell. Worked perfect on summit night on Kili. I'm only giving it 4 stars because it is a bit heavy but other than that a great fleece.
What would be a good outer layer TNF jacket that is wind resistant, that could be worn over the khumbu fleece jacket comfortably. Would be used in 35-50 degree weather? Preferably with colors that would go with the basin blue/empire blue of the khumbu, and has a hood.
I'd recommend the Geosphere. Hooded, windproof, water-resistant, mesh-lined, generous cut for easy layering. The price is nice, too; it can be found for under $70.http://www.backcountry.com/store/TNF0969/The-North-Face-Geosphere-Jacket-Mens.html?CMP_ID=SH_FRO001&CMP_SKU=TNF0969&mv_pc=r126
I've had this jacket for over two years now. I've owned a North Face Denali, and an Apex Bionic. The Khumbu, although cheaper and supposedly less efficient (and less trendy) than the other two, is by far my favorite fleece / softshell so far. No matter what anyone says to me, I'm convinced that this jacket is just as warm as the disgustingly overpriced Denali. The winter of '06 in Maine I wore the Khumbu with a sweatshirt underneath all winter - that was my winter jacket, and it served me wonderfully. Unless you're talking wind chills below zero, this jacket with appropriate layers will stand up to the cold. At around $80, I think it's overpriced (and this is their lowest priced fleece), but you're paying for The North Face logo on the front and back, after all. I'm tall, 6'3, around 200 lbs, and an XL is a perfect fit. It fits loosely, but not too loose, which I love. It feels just right on me. There aren't 300 tassels hanging off twenty different zippers - it's a no nonsense, simple, comfortable fleece. The jacket has also pilled up very little. There are a few occasional pills around the cuffs from time to time. The color (black) has barely faded very little over the past couple yearsl, which I find amazing. My only gripe with the color is that it's way too easy to see the dog hair. I'll probably pick up a different color Khumbu eventually, just to have an extra. I really hope The North Face doesn't discontinue this jacket, or modify it in any way. Also, Backcountry rocks - their sales can't be beat.
Fair price. Excellent product. Excellent stitch work. This jacket runs a bit big, which gives plenty of room for layering. Sleeves were long and the cuffs had no means of making them tighter. However, the cuffs were tight enough that the jacket did not swallow up my hands. This is an excellent layering jacket. Comfortable and warm in mild weather conditions. The Khumbu would not keep you warm if the weather drops to the low teens. Wind cuts through the jacket as well, but the jacket is not made to stop it. Good-looking jacket. Excellent product for what its made for but don't expect more from it.
Does the khumbu have internal goggle pockets like the pumori? The specs for both jackets lists only 2 hand pockets, but my pumori has the internal ones as well. It is a nice feature and if the khumbu doesn't have it, I would probably be better off with another pumori.
This fleece turned out to be a great purchaes. Got one for my wife and myself. Very comfortable and fitting. Warm and can use even in doors since it is breathable. Will be testing it out more as the fall progresses.
I'll admit, I looked at the price tag and figured I could probably find something adequate for cheaper. Then, I figured, my hubby was worth it. Well, he loves this thing. Loves it. Light enough to not be clunky, warm enough to do the trick. The quality and workmanship is worth every dime. Highly recommend.
Great jacket for warmer winter days and cool spring/fall/summer. If you are a "warm" person, this is perfect for anything 10 degrees and up. I can slap on a t-shirt and this jacket and feel great! Fit is loose to allow for layering. The perfect fleece.
Is this jacket warm enough to wear alone in the winter? As in, with nothing on top and just regular clothes underneath? I'm not talking like 30 below or anything, just like between 0 and 30.
Definitely not. At any temperature below freezing you will be cold in The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket. It is just normal fleece (not windstopper) so the wind rips right through it. To stay warm in the winter I would recommend the Khumbu with a nice waterproof/windproof shell over it. Such as:http://www.backcountry.com/store/TNF2165/The-North-Face-Venture-Parka-Mens.htmlIf you really want to stay warm in the winter try the McMurdo:http://www.backcountry.com/store/TNF3606/The-North-Face-McMurdo-Down-Parka-Mens.html
I got this fleece thinking i would layer it with my north face shell, but its so warm and cool looking I find myself wearing it alone. very soft and very warm, and the sale price makes this fleece the clear winner amongst the north faces liners. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a low priced high quality jacket.
The Khumbu jacket made by The North Face is a fantastic mid layer garment. The fleece is great on its own for cooler temps but not for all out winter weather. The wind penetrates the jacket, but its not a wind stopper fleece so the buyer should not expect performance beyond what it was created for. The cuffs are fleece with nothing to assist in a tighter fit. However, the right size jacket picked will not make this an issue. The collar is high and very soft. The jacket has plenty of room for layering underneath and is a bit over sized, especially in arm length. The jacket is made well, feels great, and is attractive. I returned this item however, because I wanted a wind stopper fleece for Alaska weather. So I bought The North Face Navarre, which turned out to be perfect for my needs. If I had the extra money to spend I would have kept this jacket. Thanks you guys for being so easy to work with!
Great Jacket. I wore it to the WVU/Louisville game. Temps were in the 20's and I was warm all game. I had a long sleeve button up shirt on underneath. Pockets are nice upfront to keep your hands warm and put gear in. The wind was not much a factor so I cannot comment on that, but I definitely, would buy another one if need be. Ranked it a 4, because nothing is perfect.
this jacket is AWESOME for fall or a little bit colder weather, it isn't completely water resistant but still does pretty well if you're not in a downpour. super soft, super sweet jacket and sizing is pretty true
Recently purchased Khumba Fleece and overall I am very happy. At the last minute I took the fleece on a 9-day backpacking trip to Isle Royale National Park. Although doesn't pack up small was very warm wearing around camp. I really like the thick tall collar around my neck. Only complaint is I wish it was a snugger fit around my stomach and waist. A little too loose fitting in that area but I'll live with it. Overall great warm comfy fleece!!!
the price on these has not gone up in the 7 years i have known about this jacket. Not sure where this person got their info, and most off colors (not black or blue) get changed out every season, then they will get re issued later down the line
Preface, I'm a North Face gear junkie and own pants, jackets, sleeping and back packs
The Khumbu fleece is a nice standard fleece, very comfortable and warm - Since purchase I have tested it out in San Francisco, bay area and it was great - It has two outer pockets and two, larger, inner pockets.
My only complaint is that the large is a bit too large, meaning that the arms are bit too long as is the length; I am 6'0 with an athletic build and a bit bummed about the LARGE size - I am pretty sure the Medium may have been a better fit;
I found myself on the shore of Lake Huron on a brisk September morning. Walking at a fast pace so I could reach my duck blind by Sun up. There was a Northwest wind at 10 knots, so it was cold. As the goose bumps came over my body I remembered I had my North Face Khumbu fleece jacket in my pit bag. I quickly threw it on and within a moments notice I had warmth washing away the chilly goose pumps. The Khumbu kept me warm on the way to the blind, and in the blind for three hours. That 10 knot northwest wind coming strait of the lake didn't stand a chance.
I just got my fleece and it is great! I love it!! I love camping, hiking, climbing: everything. I wear my fleece everywhere! The only thing you have to be careful about is sizing. This fleece is cut a little short in the body, but it is cut a little long in the arms. So be careful. But other than that it is a great fleece!
This jacket is very warm and comfy yet is still very light. It is awesome for wearing anywhere because it isnt too light or too bulky, just right. Great jacket especially because of the zip in capabilities The North Face has out done themselves again!
Received the jacket I ordered the other week, and I am very pleased with the item. It came very quickly, and it's really a very nice jacket. I appreciate the service I was given, too.
the jacket i got was just as i had wanted it. I recieved it in the mail in less than a week and without problem.i recommend this site to all of my friends and suggest shopping through them.
Went to Smokey Mountain National Park with the fleece. Hiked 6 miles to the top of Mt. Sterling going from 1500 to 5842 feet. Camped in below freezing conditions at summit. Fleece worked great. An awesome layer to add beneath a shell or winter coat. The best feature is the neck portion which keep you very warm. However, you should not trust the fleece to block wind in extreme conditions--in that case use it as a layer. Overall, exactly what I thought I was going to get, the neck portion of the fleece is great and it was all at a low price. So good I picked one up for my brother.
This is my husbands second jacket (he also has the grey) and he wears it every where. I also have one and they are light weight yet warm. We will keep coming back for our North Face Jackets :)
My husband would always grab one of his old multi-colored, striped plaid shirts when we would head out. I seen the Khumbu Fleece Jacket and thought I would surprise him. He loves it! He looks much nicer in it than his old insulated shirts too. The jacket fits nicely and is soft and comfortable. He wears it for work & play. I was worried about the color, but he complemented it the moment he seen it come out of the package (the berry color).
This is a solid fleece jacket for the price. Of all the jackets I own this one gets the most use. Let's be clear though,it is not wind proof. The guy sitting in his duck blind wearing this jacket, gimme a break. It's a great jacket to wear around town but not something you wear in the field.
This is a great jacket. I bought it for my husband for Christmas so he would stop wearing our son's. It's light-weight but so warm. My son will wear this spring, fall and most of the winter until it gets very cold or snows and then he will wear the 700 The North Face jacket.
I bought this jacket as a Christmas gift for my son. It looked really great the first week he had it, then we noticed it started looking a little green (it's a black jacket). Now it seems as if it has been washed a few times, though it hasn't been, nor has he worn it in the rain. I hate to say I am disappointed. Perhaps I should have paid the extra money to get the Denali?!
Extremely delighted by not only the merchandise but the on line assistance. Very courteous and prompt. It was a delight to deal with a company who knew their merchandise and made my on line shopping a great experience. More companies should learn from you. Thank you. G.
I love this fleece. i wear it everywhere and it is the best. I runs a little roomy which is nice, and it is perfect for layering. It isn't windproof though so if want one that is I would go with the Pamir. Other than that this fleece is the bomb!!
I bought this for my husband. Very nice fleece. Good construction - as with most NF products. Sometimes I feel like I'm paying a little more than necessary - but the consistent quality is worth it. Cheers.
I love the jacket. I am 6'5'', 290lb football player and the jacket fits great with room to move in the shoulders and I can't say that about a lot of XXL's. I gotta give credit to Backcountry, I got this jacket to my door for $90 with 2nd day shipping, its a $99 jacket in the mall plus tax, driving there and fighting the crowd and parking. Thanks.
This fleece is a very good piece of equipment for all-weather wear. It's quite warm, but not overly so for temperate conditions. However, if you're considering buying one, you'll probably want to get a shell for it for water/wind-proofing purposes. It's also pretty stylish, for those of you worried about such things.
I could wear this everyday! light weight and warm. I love the quality of this jacket. Perfect for the morning walk with the dog or layered with my waterproof shell! Highly recommended.
This jacket is very warm and fairly light. It runs big though so order a size smaller than you usually do. Other than that, it is very warm and will get any job done.
I bought the Ignition Orange at the end of last season (w/graphite grey) and was l so impressed at it's taming of the cold vermont winter that I had to get another in case one was in the wash. When I saw that my favoite jacket color filo green was being discontinued I had to have one. I just got the jacket and the colors are the best combo of them all. Get this color before there gone, you won't be sorry you did. I am a larger man (52 inch chest) and the length is perfect (below the waist & the fit is perfect).
I love this fleece keeps me warm when its cold, when its not so cool keeps me warm but not to the point where i'm sweating. Very comfortable. Great Fleece.
I purchased 2 of these jackets as Christmas gifts for my grandsons and was very pleased, not only with the jackets but with the service I received! The quality was excellent and my grandchildren loved them! This was my first purchase from you and shortly after I ordered them online, I realized I might have ordered one of the jackets in a smaller size than I should have. I called customer service and was helped by the most courteous young man! I don't remember his name, but he was so helpful! I wasn't sure if I could change my order after I had submitted it, but he checked on it for me and found that I called in time! He took care of it for me and I received the jackets much sooner than I expected! I was just very pleased with your service. I would recommend you to anyone else and will certainly be back for more! Thank you very much and Happy New Year!
I bought this jacket for my boyfriend and he absolutely loves it! Thanks so much for the awesome service and shipping! The fleece is super warm and a lot thicker than other brands. I will definitely shop here for all my North Face.. Thanks!
I purchased these jackets for my 13 and 14 year old sons for Christmas. They love them and it's now easy to get them to wear a jacket when its cold and windy. Light weight yet warm and a totally cool fashion statement for any age.
It's a fine jacket but I would rather go with a Denali The first thing you notice with this jacket and the Denali is that the fleece feels totally different. The Denali's Polartec 300 fleece feels so soft and smooth. The Khumbu's Polartec 200 fleece feels "itchy". The jacket is considerably less than the Denali but after just trying it on, I knew that the Denali was a better buy and that I would like that more. So I returned the Khumbu for the Denali. For me to wear a piece of clothing, it must be comfortable not just look good. The Khumbu looks good but I'm not a fan of the Polartec 200. This is just my opinion, you may like the 200 but once you experience the Polartec 300, you won't be going back to anything else.
Great jacket! Bought these for both brother and dad - they love them. I had to return dad's for size reasons. Had to wait for the refund for about 1.5 weeks but not bad since they make returns a cinch! Highly recommend your site!
Received my Khumbu fleece Jacket and it is awesome. I've been wearing almost everyday and it is a great layer for those below zero degree weather. It is very comfortable and have had many compliments. If you are cold a lot as i am, it's like wearing a warm blanket. The reviews on this site were extremely helpful. The delivery was fast and the price was unbeatable when i compared to other sites. I will definitely be a return customer.
the khumbu fleece is a great jacket. fits in my aliance jacket well, and is very worm. i wore it on the Appalachian trail alot, and loved it. but it doesnt block the wind as well as i had hoped though.
I brought this jacket for my son , all i can say is that he wore it all day. finally i had to tell him to take it off. and i thought the price was right.also he said it kept him warm . i would tell a friend to buy this jacket .
This site is awesome & this is an excellent jacket. They exchanged my jacket for a smaller size even though I already wore it once - without a hitch! I'm extremely satisfied with the jacket and this site.
I haven't taken it to the mountain yet, but this fleece is great. I've mainly used it for staying warm in the evening. I love the look and it's crazy soft.
This baby worked great with my fleece (puffball) pants to sleep in. During the day I always had my fleece jacket on and alternated between my shell and my Mountain Hardwear down coat. I could adjust the zipper as needed to avoid perspiring. Without this shop I wouldn't stand a chance of summiting this Class A Himilaya mountain between Lhotse and Ama Dablam.
It's a very good fit for me. I ordered a large for myself hoping the sleeves would be long enough for my 6'3 build and they were! Only real issue I have is the fact that the discontinued colors prices went up after I bought mine. I told a friend to get one too but now they're unsure if they want to spend the extra money.... oh well, I got mine.
tick, tock, tick, tock, tick tock......BOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!! This fleece must be made by terrorists cuz baby it is da bomb!! its soft its warm and i love it, also great customer service
