The description says that this pack has a "zip rain cover pocket" - does this mean that there is a waterproof pocket in the pack? somewhere to safely stash cell phone, mp3 player, etc if I get caught in a rain storm?

No, this means it has a pocket that the included rain cover packs into. The raincover is like a rainfly for your pack, so it should keep everything in your pack dry including your cell phone, mp3, etc dry.
