The North Face Hightail Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down
The North Face Hightail 900 15-Degree Down Sleeping Bag culminates The North Face's quest for the lightest, warmest down, and down-proof sleeping bag technology. Incredibly comfortable, ultralight, and toasty warm, the Hightail is part of The North Face's backpacking Flight Series. The North Face starts with ultralight 15 denier ripstop HelioLite ripstop nylon (one of the lightest downproof materials in existence) and fills it with 900 fill Eastern European goose down—the lightest, most efficient down on the market. The 'rippled' baffle-construction evenly distributes the Hightail's 900-fill down for maximum warmth and prevents the insulation from shifting side to side, creating cold spots. The one-third-length zipper features a draft tube to seal in warm air, as well as a no-snag stiffener in the zipper column. You'll be hard-pressed to find a warmer, lighter, more comfortable 15-degree sleeping bag. The Hightail 900 includes a nylon/mesh storage bag for storing around the house and a stuff sack for backpacking.
Bottom Line: The culmination of 3-season, ultralight, down-filled sleeping bags.
While the North Face Hightail bag normally has a pretty high price tag on it, it's definitely worth the money. Normally I'm a big fan of Mountain Hardwear gear. I have 2 MH synthetic bags, but I have really wanted a down bag. Synthetic bags don't last as long even when they're well-maintained so for this reason I decided to look outside of MH for a down bag. The hightail is by far the best bag I've owned so far, hands down. It is extremely warm, lightweight, durable, and compact, just about everything you could ask for in a sleeping bag. I really like the zippered footbox that allows you to vent excess heat when you need to, it makes the bag much more versatile for various climates. The bag itself is very plush and comfortable, it seems like the down is equally dispersed throughout the bag so as to eliminate cold spots in one particular area, and for once, the hood fits my head perfectly. With a good quality stuff sack like an OR Drycomp or a Sea to Summitt event, the hightail compresses very nicely, I would adivse getting a different comp sack though as the one the bag comes with is a pretty cheap stuff sack. The only thing I wish NF had done differently with this bag is installing a 2 way zipper because the zipper on the outside makes it difficult sometimes to zip the bag, I would have preferred one on the inside. but with that being the only complaint, this bag is money well spent.
North Face beat marmot with the Hightail. The hightail is as light and small as the marmot helium but the hightail includes a foot zipper which allows a ton of ventilation in warm weather. I have only slept in this bag in the low 40s but it seems as warm as any 15 degree bag I have used. The bag has good dimensions and was not constricting as I slept.
Those are really functional ways to choose a zipper side. The more romantic answer (and the one I abide by) is the opposite of your expected snuggle buddy's bag. Not that they're likely to actually be compatible, but you get lucky (doubly so, really) sometimes.
the above comment about being left or right handed is one point... but in my opinion it's more important to consider which side you like to sleep on if you lie on your side. Lying on a zipper all night could be less comfortable for you!
If it's not a big deal, then just pick one.Well either one will work. The correct answer is if you are right handed get a left zip and if you are left handed get a right zip. The reason for this is it is easier to reach across your body to unzip/zip the bag.
This is a great bag. It is incredibly light weight and the loft of the fill is unbelievable. A 2 way full zip would give better functionality, but I have learned to live with the 3/4. No problem using this down to 15 degree's.
Reviewing the long. Will burn you up over 50f. Half zip needs to be at least a 3/4 zip, too short. Hip a little narrow. If you're a big person, 200-220lb, 6'. It will not do for anything above 50f. If it's cold, this bag is awesome at 2lbs. Use a good pad, I think the down on the backside is a little thin. At a minimum, fluff it nightly to prevent bare spots on the back. The 80 fill fluffs incredibly well, but don't neglect it.
