Should I get an insulated ski jacket or should I just layer under a shell? The North Face solves your cold-weather conundrum with the Men's Hero Triclimate Jacket. The North Face slipped a Heatseeker-insulated liner inside a waterproof shell to bring you a versatile 3-in-1 jacket for winter's coldest days. Wear this system all together for making turns in the resort, just the shell on wet afternoons, or just the liner jacket for chilly mornings in the city.
Bottom Line: The North Face's Hero for cold weather.
I purchased the Amplitude Triclimate. The Hero looks exactly the same ? Is this true ? It's a great jacket. It kept me warm and dry, thru Chicago's winters. The heatseeker jacket is great.
Hi - They are pretty close in looks, but the shell fabric on the Amplitude is quite a bit nicer in my opinion. There is a pretty big difference when you see them side by side.
I bought this jacket for my 5'11'' tall, 210lb husband. The jacket is very light yet warm and the lining makes a pretty good jacket itself. The only problem I had was the size, and this had been an issue with almost everything by North Face that I had purchased in the past. Size XL was too roomy and overall big and size L seems a bit too tight, especially the sleeves. My husband decided to keep the large one, although he will not be able to wear a sweater underneath. Overall I would recommend it, but perhaps try it on first if you see one at your local North Face store.
I have recently purchased this jacket and since it has come in I have been awaiting the time to wear it. I love it, even though I havent actually put it to use. Its not heavy and is very comfortable. I got an XL and its slightly big but the sleeves fit me great (the L was just a little short in the sleeves). Thier is a stripe down the sides that cannot be seen in the picture, I thought it was all a solid color which is partly why I picked this particular jacket. Its my first triclimate jacket but already I feel like its going to be my favorite by far. I would recomend it to anyone. Also before I bought the jacket I tried on a similar (North Face) jacket at a local store to "size up the fit" so I wouldnt have to chance a possible return.
I think it would work, but it wouldn't be my first choice for a warmer weather shell because it is lined and has a pretty heavy shell fabric. Probably fine for occasional spring use, but if you want to use it for backpacking or any other use where packability and weight are going to be an issue, I would look at something like The North Face Venture Jacket or Resolve Jacket.
The "Seam Taped" of this jacket says: [Shell] Yes, critically . But most of the other TNF triclimate says : Yes, fully. What's the difference? Does it means the seam seal of this HERO triclimate jacket is inferior to other triclimate jackets? Thanks!
I bought a size small and it fits me perfectly. I'm not a really big guy - 5'8" with a relatively slim waist, size 30, and the jacket looks great on me. I tried on a size medium at a local sporting goods store, which had a little more room with the inside jacket but when I removed the inside jacket, the fit was a little big on me. So the size small couldn't have worked out better. I highly recommend this jacket. It does an excellent job at blocking out the wind and keeping you feeling warm during cold weather conditions.
The recommended uses for this jacket are "skiing, cold weather, street." I think this under sells the jacket. I have been using it for near freezing hiking and backpacking and it keeps more than warm. I would have no problem using this in a layering during sub freezing backpacking trips. Add backpacking to the list of uses, this coat has potential.
Great jacket! Very comfortable and warm. I struggled a little with the sizing, primarily because I'm somewhere between an L and an XL. I went with the L, and I can still wear a sweater underneath it. It does get a little snug when I try to sit down with a sweater underneath and zipped up. Overall, quite happy with the product. And...back country is the shizznit!
I have been wearing this jacket through a cold winter now and it is very warm. It keeps the wind out and keeps you warm. It is very comfortable and fits me just right. Good quality on the construction, and so far it has been waterproof. The inner liner jacket is a little thinner than I thought it would be, but it still is warm when used with the entire jacket. I love it and it was just what I was looking for. Nice and light, too, for how much warmth it gives.
It will keep you warm if you are using it for an aerobic activity like skiing or winter hiking, but it you would be in a situation where you would be out in the cold and not moving for periods of time (i.e. mountaineering) the insuilation might not be enough. Basically it's great down to about 20 F anything colder than that and i go with a down jacket.
My husband loves this jacket. We were out yesterday in the low 30's and it was very windy. He only wore a t-shirt under it and was comfortable. It looks great, too!
North Face sizing is a little off.. i'm 5'8" but stocky (170lbs of skin/bones and some muscle) the chest is a little tight but the arm length is perfect... the large fits better on the torso but my arms are swimming... i went with the medium.
The jacket quality is bar none... absolutely great. I went up to Killington VT where the weather was 35F and was never cold... or wet. I believe its the best money you can spent for a economical jacket... (you can always buy a North Face Goretex for $$$ but unless you are going up to Canada.. i don't see the point).
Like everyone says... try it on in the store (if possible) then order online... my pants are North Face... but suprisingly were cheaper at the brick and mortor store.
Do yourself a favor and get this great intermediate jacket. Oh and customer service is amazing. They will bend over backwards to make sure you are happy. A rarity these days.
Does the outer shell have a stripe on the side for all colors?I cant look at the side from the pictures, and i've heard thatit does have a stripe on the side. Does the bittersweet brownhave a white stipe on the side? Also, is the outershell Hyvent DT or just Hyvent? Thanks
Amazing jacket! I've used it in 10-15 degree weather so far and it was very warm. Of course I had a few layers on underneath. The waterproof part is great, works very well. I've actually worn just the liner itself for the most part just because it hasn't been cold enough. I love it!
It is a nylon. The shell of the jacket feels very sturdy, yet not heavy. If you do end up purchasing the jacket, I suggest you go with your true size since the arm sleeves will probably be too long.
This jacket keeps you warm and dry and does well in strong winds and sleet storms. The removable liner is handy if the temperature climbs a little and it is very easy to take in and out. Works well for downhill skiing but some wind did come thru the zipper but it kept me warm on the lifts. You might want to order an XL if you normally wear a L, the sizes seem to run a little small. There are also some goofy white stripes down the sides that you can't see in this picture but if your more concerned with comfort and warmth than I wouldn't worry about those.
I am a little longer torsoed than a regular person, but do not need a tall. My last jacket was always a little too short for me. Can you tell me how many inches it is from the shoulder seam (where the collar attaches) to the bottom in a size L or XL?
Over the last little bit their has been some serious storms here in salt lake and this jacket has absolutely been amazing in weather keeping me warm and dry.
warm, versatile.Best jacket ive ever owned. I recommend trying it on somewhere before you purchase though. I tried it on at Bloomingdales where it was 350... (lol.. suckas!!!)
I'm 6'1", 180lbs, 34/35 dress shirt sleeve length, chest size 40. I have always worn size L in two of my North Face jackets (Redpoint and another Triclimate with a fleece liner). Previous comments suggest this jacket is sized small. What size should I get?
I found this jacket to run pretty true to size, maybe just a hair on the small end. Are you on the high end of large almost running into XL? You may consider sizing up if you are or if your arms are on the long end of 34/35. I'm almost the same build as you and I upped to an XL because of my arm length.Hope that helps.
This jacket seems awesome. I just got it today, (I ordered it at 10:30 last night, awesome free shipping backcountry.com, thanks). It looks like it will be great come winter though. This is an amazing jacket for the price. The medium fits great. It looks to be very water-proof and warm. I would highly recommend it.
You'll fit a large fine. I am 6'1" and about 170lbs. I would look at your arm length though. I have monkey arms so I always upsize to an XL which works better for me. So if you have extra long arms you may want to size up.
This jacket was purchased mainly because the price was in my range. I've had it for a month now, and I love it. It did seem lightweight and I wasn't sure if it would keep me warm below 32 degrees, but it does very well. I usually only wear a hooded sweatshirt underneath, and I've been in weather as low as 15 to 20 degrees so far without getting cold. The drawstrings at the waist line help alot when pulled tight, so no air can get in. I also took snowboarding which worked great because it's not a bulky jacket. My only regret is I didn't buy this jacket years ago. The pockets seem fine to me and the white stripe on the sides look good as well. I'm 5'7, weigh 160, and the medium fits me perfect. Great mid-priced jacet!
Will this jacket keep me warm around 10 degrees? need serious help. I have a Steep tech and they do no good. i have to wear a sweatshirt and a sweater under it to b warm.
It has been under 10 F here this week, and it has been keeping me warm. Of course, you have to layer under it properly and wear proper hat and gloves and boots when it is that cold. But the jacket does great.
Love the jacket, but had to return for a bigger size. I typically wear XL in EVERYTHING but the inner layer jacket was just too snug for comfort. The XXL fit perfect, and i am 6ft tall 236lb. I think TNF makes the best stuff and this jacket doesnt fail. Very warm, and the chute green color is SWEET. Would recommend, but sizing is difficult if you are "in-between" sizes
Typically I like to shop locally when it comes to Christmas gifts, but your website's competitive pricing won me over. I was able to afford a higher end North Face at a lower price than my local store could offer for a lower model. Prompt delivery even with the holiday rush. Thanks
I would suggest a Small or Medium. I am 5'11", 190lbs and I wear a Medium. Measure his chest size and check the sizing chart. You don't want a jacket to be too big because that is just extra air your body has to heat to keep you warm.
Most TNF shells are designed to work with other layers. The Denali jacket is zip-in compatible, as is this jacket. However, this jacket is already a 3-in-1, but I imagine that zipping the Denali inside this shell would make it one toasty waterproof jacket.
besides the hood being removable on the amplitude. what's the difference between the amplitude and the hero ? there's a price difference. is it the inner liner weight , number of pockets or what ?
all north face 3-in-1 jackets have a logo on the liner AS WELL AS the shell :) and the liners look prettymuch just like softshell jackets if you wear them alone. I have one, and my boyfriend lost his coat so he always steals my liner.... which is why I'm looking at men's jackets!
man i cant tell you what its lined with but i ordered one and just got it in a few days ago and its a totaly sweet jacket!!!! i cant wait till i get to use it!!!
