The North Face Men's Hedgehog Mid GTX XCR Hiking Shoe is as sturdy and stable as a hiking boot but lighter weight and more breathable than hikers for agility on the trail.
The North Face made the mid-cut Hedgehog's upper to be abrasion-resistant and breathable, and an EVA midsole and heel air pod absorb shock and provide rebound so you can go longer. A TPU shank protects your foot from stones but won't weigh you down or compromise responsiveness. The Gore-Tex XCR membrane doesn't let water in, so you can go straight through the stream instead of hopping awkwardly across on boulders.
Bottom Line: Adventure racers, speed hikers, and those who just want a versatile shoe for hiking and trail running will appreciate the mid-cut Hedgehog.
My husband loves these boots. He says they feel like tennis shoes but they have the durability of boots. Very light weight and the Gore-Tex works great.
I've just received my boots and had them out on one six-mile hike along the Sierra Nevada ridge south of Donner Pass. A few hundred feet of elevation gain and loss. I was carrying a loaded pack with 16 lbs of water (my 3-day pack weighs 18.5 lbs). The boots performed perfectly--no hot spots, no break-in, no problems. One minor negative: the laces are way too long, and I'll be shortening them.
Expect to cross deep streams with them in a couple of weeks and wipe them out each time. Will let you know how this works. If ok, this means I don't have to carry water shoes.
New boots arrived, true fit to size, very comfortable out of the box. Hopefully they will hold up. Kudos to backcountry.com Excellent price, service, shipping and correspondence...I will be back.
OK, it was an earlier model, but after owning one pair for a few months, I went online and bought two more pairs. I have big feet and it's hard to find shoes that fit, don't rub, have good traction, etc., etc. I use these for moderate day hikes, road walks and such. Always amazed at how waterproof they are. Tread is pretty good, though not quite as solid as a traditional Vibram sole on a wet rock.
Great hikers and style can't be beat, especially the discontinued pumpkin color. Have been using them for snowshoeing so far and have been warm and dry. Like other reviews, these do run wide, and North Face dropped the ball on the laces, but double knots take care of the problem.
Very functional. Water resistant/proof! NO BLISTERS! I typically get blisters with all boots, but these didn't cause blisters at all, even after some long hikes. Thanks TNF!
I have a very narrow foot for a male (width B), also a very straight last foot, I can not where Nike, to curved. My shoe size is 11 but my foot break is 12+. Do you think this shoe might be good for me.
I have a similar B/C width foot but the break is @ 10.5. I've always had good luck with Asolo's. They don't make this exact type of shoe but they might have something similar in their "Enduro" line:http://www.asolo.com/content.asp?L=3&idMen=420
I have the mid and low version of these shoes and they've been great. I wore the lows all through last winter on hikes and bike commutes in the Pacific Northwest and my socks never got soaked through. Also, I haven't noticed the problem some people have about the sole separating. The laces kinda suck, but that's an easy fix.
I bought the boots for my husband before we traveled to Banff and Jasper for a hiking trip. He said they were comfortable and wore them instead of his running shoes around camp as well as on our day hikes. We hiked about 55 miles or so and near the end of the trip he noticed the sole began separating from the upper. It seems like they're great for comfort, but not the most durable hiking boot.
great shoes! one of the most comfortable pair of adventure racers ive owned. tread grips on everything. i bought another pair just in case they're discontinued.
left one leaked a bit by the arch where the fabric meets the sole (tall wet grass).
I have the mids and they were great on several hikes up in the Great Smokey Mountains. You will not be disappointed. I only have one issue and that is with the shoes laces. They are way too long that if you tied your shoes too tight the laces will hit the ground and become untied. Other than that these shoes are wonderful! ! !
These are great shoes. Very comfortable and definitely waterproof. Ive tried them several times in a lot of water and no leaks. I would recommend these boots to anyone.
The shoes were great. except they are a bit narrow at the toes. I went on one hike and the shoe was very tight at the side of my toes. These shoes seem designed for a narrow foot.
I have yet to use them on a hike, but i have been wearing them often going to mall and else where. They look great but confort is average. I have had hiking boots that are more comfortable but, they are not that bad. I can't wait to try them out on the trail. The first day I had them on for about 8+ hrs and my left little toe was a little sore and the bottom of my feet were also sore. Maybe if it had a little more cushion it would have been better. I did spend most of the day walking on concrete. They may be better on the trail. Over all not bad but not the best. If you are in to looks they are a great boot.
