The North Face Elephant's Foot Sleeping Bag: Climashield NEO

The North Face made the Elephant’s Foot Sleeping Bag for diehard ounce-counters and alpinists. This sleep system weighs in at just more than a pound, so bring it along for use on a portaledge or in case of a mountaintop emergency bivy. The North Face wrapped Climashield NEO insulation (fill weight of 5 ounces) with a durable, waterproof breathable outer fabric and added nylon reinforcement to the footbox and seat. This bag’s oversized footbox accommodates your mountaineering boots, and suspender loops work with lanyards. A canted opening on the Elephant’s Foot ensures comfort for your arms but doesn’t let the cold creep down your back—adjust the shock cord at the opening to fend off cold winds.

Bottom Line: A rugged, minimalist sleep system.

Anyone know what the length is? Does it go up or your wait or up to your armpits? If the latter it might make a great summer bag

Hey Eddie - it doesn't quite make it up to your armpits - probably about halfway between your waist and armpits. I would use it as a summer with some type of primaloft or down jacket to keep the upper warm.

Minimalist Bargain
Here's old-school ultralight: This armpit-length sleeping bag reprises a half-length sack once used by European alpinists for minimalist bivy nights. The synthetic-fill bag is meant to be used in conjunction with a puffy jacket, and is designed for the abuse of real-world bivies. The waterproof/breathable cover is seam-taped for total weatherproofing, and the seat and footbox are reinforced so you can wear boots inside, or throw it down padless on a slab of rock.

Suspenders and a perimeter drawstring keep the bag pulled up around your torso and closed. Our tester found it true to its rating when used in combination with a down sweater. He added, "It's so light and packable, I also used it to warm up on winter lunch breaks and to augment an ultralight bag." Just remember: An old-school bivy isn't supposed to be fun. $129; 1 lb. 2 oz.; 40°F

North Face's website doesn't have any info about temperature ratings, it's really just supposed to be a supplement to whatever you're wearing. You wear whatever you need to stay warm and supplement it with the bag, it'll probably add around 10-15 degrees.
