With waterproof breathable fabric and fully taped seams, The North Face Men's Decagon Jacket keeps you dry as you snorkel through fresh pow. A gripper powder skirt blocks blowing snow, and the Decagon's hood protects your dome. Stash your music player and goggles in the internal pockets, and keep a trail map and keys in the chest cargo pockets. A small goggle cloth in the wrist pocket keeps your optics fog-free. The North Face’s Pants-a-lock system lets you hook the jacket to your ski pants for an even more bomber seal against the snow.
Bottom Line: Full protection for everything from fluffy powder to spring slush.
The main thing I was looking for was durability, and you'll see when you first grab the jacket that it's got that, plus a lot of great extra features like the hidden hood and waste toggles, the streamlined permanent hood, and pit vents.
I ski MN, so it's cold and icy most of the season. The Decagon kept me plenty warm when used w/ proper baselayers (capeline and North Face Windwall fleece). The taffeta (woven synthetic fabric) lining provides added warmth and the shell by itself was great for late season adventures as it kept me cool and dry.
The sizing is a little larger than normal... a medium fit me perfect, when I usually wear a large.
Summing up the review. I look forward to many years of warmth, comfort and style w/ this jacket and it didn't dent my pocketbook.
I've skied in this jacket for two seasons now and have been pretty pleased with it. It has proven very durable and shows no signs of wear when it definitely should. It's not the warmest jacket, so layering is a must on those cold days, which brings me to my first quibble. There isn't a whole lot of room in the shoulders, so you feel a little constricted when layering. It is also too short in length. Granted, I'm a skinny 6'4" wearing a large, but it still seems short. Another issue is the zippers. The fabric in the pockets and the pit-zip vents FREQUENTLY get caught in the zippers. Those are really my only complaints. I've never been wet, even when it started to rain a little and it stops the wind very well. On warm spring days, the vents cool you off quickly.
This is a great ski jacket. I usually wear a NF medium, so I ordered one and am a bit disappointed by the long arms that bunch up. Its mainly an aesthetic issue, but I would say this jacket runs a little larger than most. Also, there is no goggle wipe, which was mentioned in another review, so maybe the description should be modified. Another strange issue with this jacket is the lower pockets, with zips and velcro they aren't meant for keeping your hands warm, just storage.
I bought the aster blue and boy is that puppy bright! The color grew on me and now I love it. Nice slimmer cut and longer arms. Huge front pockets make it even better.
bough the aster blue at the beginning of the season. Heard many complements on the mountain about the color and kept me warm in varying temperature ranging from -17 through upper 30's. My only complaint is the size of the hood. It's a bit too small. Won't fit a helmet.
I like to have lots of pockets for all the things I never carry on me... But if I wanted to, I could. This is why I was interested in the decagon. I use this jacket for colder rainy days, water beads really well off of it. It has a powder skirt and goggle/ipod pocket and would make a good ski/snowboard jacket though I imagine you'd want a decent midlayer underneath on the colder snow days. It's light enough to cram into a backpack (but would take most the space) it's more bulky than a plain windbreaker. This thing also has a soft liner on the chin area for when you need the hood. The only reason I rated this 4 stars out of 5 is the velcro on the hand pockets, it's an extra 2 seconds of hassle I shouldn't have to deal with (to get my hands past both velcro and zippers just to get into the pockets). As somebody reviewed before, zippers alone would have sufficed on the hand warmer pockets. Other than that this is a great jacket that with the proper layering can keep you warm in almost any weather.
I picked up this coat a few weeks ago and have found it to be a good buy. I'm a fan of the large pockets which are big enough to hold a camera and/or some food without looking bulky. I've clipped a few trees and the outer layer held up fine. I have not taken it on a tour of more than a few hours and do not know how it handles compared to its more technical counterparts, but for pounding bc laps here in CO it has been perfect. Great pickup for under $200.
I bought this jacket for my teenaged son, it was thinner than we expected and we ended up getting a fleece to wear underneath for colder/snowy days. But all in all he was happy which is a mean feat for a teenager, whose mind/taste changes every 3 seconds.
Just recieved my coat today, nice coat was as I expected gonna put it to use soon . Two small gripes,1.) description says theres a wrist pocket with a goggle wipe? not too be found on my coat! 2.) the Loden green is darker than the loden green on my monte cargo pants ,more like a military green! No biggie can still shred two tone! service was great shipped 2nd day small gaf with the billing backcountry upgraded me next day poof! and there it was the next day. great job!
I have a variation of the jacket called the Decatric. The only difference I'm aware of is that mine came with a soft shell jacket that is removable. I like this jacket a lot but there are a few things that bother me. I usually use Patagonia stuff which is pretty minimalist so this North Face piece is a different experience. First, I noticed that the fabric is pretty loud. It crinkles a lot and announces you when you walk into the room. Also, the fit is quite baggy. Like the other reviewer said, the arms are long and they styling is roomy, presumably to allow for underlayers. For my tastes though, it could be trimmed down a bit.
The jacket holds up well in wet weather. I went up to the snow and it did well in rainy, and later snowy, conditions. The hood has a nice trim fit. I don't understand the velcro AND zippered handwarmer pockets. A simple storm flap over the zipper would have been sufficient. It's like they're trying to keep your hands OUT. Overall, a good jacket but I paid quite a bit less than full price. For full price, you're better off looking elsewhere. -http://patagoniacommunity.blogspot.com/
