The North Face Cipher Windstopper Jacket - Men's - 2009
Spring backcountry skiing, alpine rock climbing, and mountain hikes all have one thing in common: wind. And the only solution to the wind is The North Face Men’s Cicpher Windstopper Jacket. This lightweight softshell features a Gore Windstopper membrane that blocks 100% of the wind while remaining insanely breathable for strenuous crack pitches and sweaty skin tracks. Four-way stretch allows full range of motion, and the two alpine hand pockets can be accessed with a harness on.
Bottom Line: A lightweight softshell that stops wind in its tracks.
I am 5'8" 190 and I usually wear a M in TNF gear but this one has a more athletic cut than some of their other jackets. I have the windwall thermal in a M and two fleece jackets in M. This one however I needed a L. It is stretchy material and breathes well. For being resistant-which it does a good job of, it breathes very well. I woudl rate the wind resistance 4 out of 5. I wear it for running and in the winter for snowshoeing on warmer days and it does what I need it to-move well, insulate just a bit, breath and protect from wind.
i`ve just bought a powershield jacket (rab baltoro guide), and whilst its windproof, you can see a little light through the fabric. its a very warm jacket, but i have not tried it on the hill yet, though i think it`ll be a little sweaty, so its ideal for WINTER
I got this jacket last week and took it camping in Moab and it did great. It was warm enough to wear in in the day and block the wind. At night it worked great under my down jacket. I am 200lbs and 6'3" and got an XL and it works great. I sized up since it is the summit series which normally are more form fitting. I would highly recommend if you are looking for a light weight layering piece or a great light jacket for a windy day.
I live in the Northeast. Can this jacket be worn in temps in the upper 60s to low 70s with rain...does it have a thick liner that would make it too warm to wear at these temps?
It does not have a thick liner. 60-70s I think is pretty warm for any kind of top layer but if you are looking for a thin layer in those temps this is a great choice. Does a good job protecting against wind as well. Have not had it in the rain much but for the little rain I have been in it has done well. In a downpour or constant rain I would look at something different like a thin softshell-see arc'teryx gamma mx hooded or the Backcountry shift welder
I just took this thing to borneo, it was pretty sweet in the warmer humid temp as a breathable wind-layer, the liner is not very thick... more on the borneo adventure and some videos with this product in it at: http://borneobigwall.blogspot.com
So far this jacket is great for spring skiing. It blocks the wind well considering how lightweight the coat is. On a 35 degree day here in Utah I wear a medium weight fleece underneath and stay warm. Seems to repel water and breathes quite well.
The jacket also does run a little short, so depending if you wanted it for town wear its a bit helpful to size up. The arm length however would probably fit you for a small though. Grip it and rip it!
Either size will fit you it just depends on how you want it to fit. A small will be more fitted and snug while the Medium will fit looser and allow for more mobility.
Great athletic fit! I have been using my jacket a few weeks now for spring ski touring and ski mountaineering,it seeems to be the perfect jacket for spring mountain temperatures. In the evenings it has served well for when the tenperature drops on evening mountain or road rides!
This coat is a great one to wear in all conditions- be it snow, sunny or even the occasional downpour. I happened to be wearing it one night that turned epic (i.e. downpour and lightning) and it held it's own, even if by no means is it considered waterproof. However, it is one hundred percent windproof. One of the best hybrid soft shells made- Gore windstopper front and arms and house brand Apex soft shell for a little breathability under the arms and sides.
It will work best as a mid layer in the heart of winter. I wore mine under an Arcteryx Pro-shell and it worked great. On a a warmer spring ski day it would be plenty because of the breathable materials under the arms of the jacket.
It could be used for snowshoeing on a warm day because its highly breathable and it has Windstopper and Apex softshell for protection, but in general for winter activities it would be better as a mid-layer.
Took this jacket on a trail run in 25 degree weather. Great wind/snow protection and comfortable with two poly-pro layers underneath. The hood stays out of the way and I would imagine it would be useful in a storm situation. Pretty sure this will be one of my favorite all-around jackets.
When I first took this jacket out of the box I was surprised at how thin it was, and wasn't sure how it would hold up in chilly/windy/rainy weather. While it isn't too warm (not really designed to be), it is excellent for wind/drizzle, really holds up well. Athletic cut, but it moves well, not constricting at all. Overall a really nice jacket.
I take this thing everywhere! Been skiing with it, hike with it, or just wear it everywhere. It's light, yet durable. blocks the wind awesome, and looks good! It packs up really small and is my jacket of choice to keep on me at all times...
